Multi-sport Athletes Find Success In Baseball And Football

Nothing like being a high school student playing a sport … or two.

In an age of specialization, some are even enjoying the art of participating in more than one sport … and finding success as well. Both football and baseball are working out for many high school athletes in Ohio, with some earning accolades along the way.

“Playing multiple sports in high school has developed me into a better overall athlete along with giving me the ability to further build my confidence because of the high-stress situations in both sports,” explained Avon High School senior Gavin Ehrhardt, a first-team Division II all-state linebacker who is headed to play baseball at the University of Cincinnati.

Walsh Jesuit senior Justin Bremner, a University of Canisius baseball commit, concurs about the benefits of playing both baseball and football: “Playing multiple high school sports has helped me with not only my athletic abilities but also time management. Balancing multiple sports and school work is not easy but definitely helps develop important skills for the future.”

Danny Stoddard, the Division I Offensive Player of the Year who led Medina to an 11-2 record and the third round of the playoffs, is another that believes competing in both football and baseball is valuable.

“I think playing multiple sports is beneficial because it keeps me active, lets me learn from different coaches and helps me develop teamwork skills,” related the 17-year-old junior, who was a starting center fielder on the Medina baseball team as a sophomore. “Football helps me as a baseball player because it keeps my arm active as a quarterback and teaches me how to be a leader. It helps me develop a stronger and conditioned body.”

For many, the future in sports lies with football.

“My goal is to play Division I college football,” explained Will Kocher, a first-team Division II all-state quarterback for Kings High School, who is a standout catcher in baseball. “ I want to go to a program that I know is going to max out my potential.”

For others, baseball is their college dream when it comes to athletics.

“In college, I plan to play Division 1 baseball,” related Eaton D-II all-state pitcher Brady Rice, who is recovering from shoulder surgery following a senior football season in which he earned Division IV third-team all-state recognition as a linebacker. “I am doing everything I need to to get back out on the baseball field and come back stronger and better than I was before my injury. I cannot wait to get back on the field and play the game I love.”

Some, like Matthew Frye, a D-III first-team all-state receiver, will continue playing both sports at the next level.

“I was having trouble picking which sport I wanted to continue playing in college, and ended up getting the opportunity to play both at the Mount,” noted the Western Brown senior, a right-handed pitcher in baseball headed to Mount St. Joseph’s.

Additionally, there are those that have taken part in more than just football and baseball, even playing soccer during the fall while also kicking for the high school team on the gridiron.

“Playing multiple sports creates many new friendships, and ultimately sparks memories that will last a lifetime.” pointed out Archbold senior Krayton Kern, an Adrian College baseball commit who earned Division III second-team all-state recognition this past season in soccer while being selected for Division V third-team accolades in football as a punter.

Cade Boos of Eastwood takes no time off, playing the one-two-three sports of football in the fall, basketball in the winter and baseball in the spring.

“Playing football and basketball helps me as a baseball player mostly because they help me build athleticism,” noted the Eastwood senior, a first-team all-state infielder in baseball last spring who plans to pursue football in college after earning first-team honors as a D-III running back this past season on the gridiron. “I know athleticism isn’t greater than skill in the sport of baseball but it can sure help. Also, just going out and competing against others in football and basketball has made me more of a hard-nosed athlete where I never want to lose, which translates to baseball.”

It is only natural that some have had difficulty in deciding which sport to play at the next level, perhaps nobody more so than Perrysburg senior standout Connor Walendzak. Once a Purdue baseball commit, Walendzak has now decided football is his sport of choice in college with a commitment to play at the University of Toledo.

“I felt like playing multiple sports in high school allowed me to develop more athleticism and a feel for both games,” Walendzak said about the advantages of being a two-sport athlete in high school. “Playing both football and baseball allowed me to translate different movements and traits back and forth between the two.”

Christian Commisso has enjoyed playing two sports, but understands it may not be for all.

“I have never been against specializing in one sport, the only thing is, you better be really good at the sport you specialize in,” noted the Defiance High School senior, a third-team Division III all-state linebacker who plays first base for one of the top D-II baseball teams in Ohio. “I encourage people to play more than one sport but at the end of the day if you only enjoy one sport, stick with that one.”

Tom Bohman, a senior at New Albany, summed it up well when it comes to deciding between specializing and playing in more than one sport.

“From my experience playing multiple sports has been a huge blessing not just because of the benefits that each sport provides for the others, but because of the benefits that all of the sports provide for life,” explained Bohman, a second-team Division I all-state linebacker. “What you get out will be worth what you put in, but you do have to be committed.”

Read on to find out what these multi-sport athletes have to say about their high school experiences in athletics.

Tom Bohman RHP / 3B / New Albany, OH / 2023

Football: D-I second-team all-state linebacker

Baseball: RHP, 269th-rated senior

At-A-Glance: Bohman, who helped New Albany to the regional finals this past football season, does not have plans to play sports in college but is keeping options open.

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
I think the biggest thing is the widening of perspective. Yes you learn about being part of a team from both football and baseball, but the lesson from each is very different, and the people you have to work with in each can be very different, too. Recognizing that not everyone is motivated the same way and that everyone has slightly different goals is vital when trying to be a leader in two different sports. Another big thing is discipline. Playing one sport will teach you discipline enough but playing two adds a whole other element. You are training for sports practically year round while still having to perform in the classroom so you need to develop a disciplined lifestyle.

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
Playing football at New Albany has been a huge blessing for me. Our three "non-negotiables" are: no excuses, positive juice, and relentless effort. If you decide to not show up with these three things then you can expect to be in some pain until you do. These lessons in attitude and effort have translated to every aspect of my life, including baseball. Learning how to be physically and mentally tough, pushing forward when your mind is telling you to stop, has had a huge positive impact on my baseball career.

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
The hardest part is really the time commitment. Playing more than one sport requires year-round, non-stop training, leaving you with little time for much else. I actually played basketball for a long time as well but in my junior year of high school I had to stop because the pressure of three sports and my rigorous academic schedule was too much. You really have to be committed and convinced that playing those sports is really what you want to be doing.

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
I would tell them to follow their heart. From my experience playing multiple sports has been a huge blessing not just because of the benefits that each sport provides for the others, but because of the benefits that all of the sports provide for life. What you get out will be worth what you put in, but you do have to be committed. I would also say that sports are not the only place to learn life lessons and develop as a person. Really take time to explore your interests and decide what you want to pursue because if you are not doing what you want to do, it can be rough.

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
I do not plan on playing sports in college at this time but I am keeping my options open.

Case Boos SS / 2B / Eastwood, OH / 2023

Football: D-V first-team all-state running back

Baseball: Shortstop, unranked senior

At-A-Glance: A standout in basketball in the winter, the three-sport athlete is uncommitted with plans to play in football in college.

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
I feel like playing multiple sports and enjoying all of them is really important to a high school athlete. They all teach you something different and you have different people to interact with each season. I also have different coaches who care about me in different ways and that is a good thing in my opinion.

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
Playing football and basketball helps me as a baseball player mostly because they help me build athleticism. I know athleticism isn’t greater than skill in the sport of baseball, but it can sure help. Also, just going out and competing against others in football and basketball has made me more of a hard-nosed athlete where I never want to lose, which translates to baseball.

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
The hardest part I would say is that you don’t have the most time to spend on getting really good at one sport. Time management is sometimes a struggle and some soreness as well since I have practice every single day of the school year. I don’t think there are any disadvantages to being a multi-sport athlete, it will help you no matter the circumstances in your athletic future.

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
I would tell them that if they liked to play a sport, go play it. Any other sport is going to benefit somebody and make them a better athlete for the sport they would want to specialize in. If you don’t like a sport and don’t want to play it, I get it, but don’t quit a sport that you enjoy just to focus on a different sport because being a part of different athletic teams can only help, not hurt.

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
When it comes to college athletics, I will be playing football. Playing college football at any level, especially Division I, has been one of my goals since I started my high school career, and I’m going to pursue that. However, I am still working on which school I will be attending.

Justin Bremner OF / SS / Walsh Jesuit, OH / 2023

Football: D-II honorable mention running back

Baseball: Outfielder, 113th-rated senior

At-A-Glance: The 15th-rated 2023 outfielder in Ohio recently committed to play baseball at Canisius.

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
Playing multiple high school sports has helped me with not only my athletic abilities but also time management. Balancing multiple sports and school work is not easy but definitely helps develop important skills for the future.

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
Football helps with baseball in many ways. The footwork that is required to play running back directly translates to the outfield. Also the balance and low center of gravity football demands helps with having a balanced and smooth swing.

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
The hardest part of playing multiple sports is time management and designing specific lifts for different sports. But I cannot name any disadvantages.

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
I would tell future high schoolers that playing multiple sports is one of the best things for a young athlete. It teaches time management and how to be an athlete under stressful conditions.

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
I am currently committed to play Division I baseball. I have also received interest to play college football. I do not know what the future holds.

Casey Bullock 3B / RHP / St. Edward, OH / 2024

Football: D-I third-team all-state quarterback

Baseball: Third baseman, 66th-rated junior

At-A-Glance: The two-sport 2024 standout is uncommitted, unsure about not only where he will go to college but what sport he will play.

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
Playing multiple sports helps me develop different muscle groups and different skill sets that make me feel more capable on the field in both sports.

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
Playing football helps me in baseball because playing quarterback really improves my arm strength. Playing quarterback also helps me anticipate how much quickly I need to get the ball out from third in order to get a guy out. Lastly, playing football gives me a competitive edge that I bring to baseball as well.

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
The hardest part about playing two sports is that you don’t really have a long offseason to go to showcases or camps as a part of your recruitment, but I don’t see that as a disadvantage because most colleges appreciate multi-sport athletes.

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
I would tell a future high school athlete to definitely pursue being a multi-sport athlete not only for the physical benefits, but because it allows you to play the games you love for as long as possible. It will not hurt your recruitment or development in either sport.

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
Right now I plan on keeping both sports in the picture for my recruitment and I will choose the opportunity that I feel is best for me when it comes. I am getting significantly more looks in football, but I don’t plan on counting baseball out because of that.

Alex Caudill RHP / 3B / Bellefontaine, OH / 2023

Football: D-III third-team all-state linebacker

Baseball: RHP, 89th-rated senior

At-A-Glance: An honorable mention two-way player in baseball as a junior, Caudill is uncommitted with plans to play baseball in college.

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
I feel like playing multiple sports has benefited me because it has allowed me to create more bonds with my teammates as well as my coaches. You get closer with the guys who you play multiple sports with and make new friends.

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
Football helped me because it taught me a lot about myself. It teaches you to push yourself past a comfortable limit. It also teaches you to trust the guy next to you, to trust him to make a play to help the team.

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
The hardest part about it is you don’t have tons of free time, especially during the summer. But with playing multiple sports I can still see my friends that I would normally hang out with so it’s fine. It’s a sacrifice I’m willing to take, though, because if it means having success in those sports then I’m fine with it.

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
I would tell them that if you really want to do that sport and focus on it then go ahead. But I would kind of guide them toward playing more than one because you won’t get burned out from doing the same sports year round. Playing multiple sports teaches you how to compete in many different environments which will prepare you for your future. And each sport teaches you more about yourself. When you’re uncomfortable and have to fight for stuff you want, that's when you learn the most about yourself.

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
I plan to go to college to play baseball.

Christian Commisso 1B / 3B / Defiance, OH / 2023

Football: D-III third-team all-state linebacker

Baseball: First baseman, unranked senior

At-A-Glance: The two-sport athlete has not decided on a college, and is considering options whether to play one or two sports at the next level.

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
I am a firm believer in the idea of staying active. Staying active can mean a lot of things, going for a walk, working out, or just doing pushups in your living room. Playing multiple sports in high school has made me stay active. It has given me the opportunity to stay in shape and have something to do and look forward to almost all the time. I think the most important benefit I have received from playing multiple sports is the relationships I have formed with all of my teammates and coaches. I went from not having a clue who a lot of people were to being really close with them. It is really amazing how many people you can meet and branch out from just playing a sport. It is really something special.

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
Playing football has helped me out as a baseball player by making me mentally and physically stronger. Football is one of the hardest sports to play. The mental and physical strength it takes to play football is significant. There are a lot of people who judge football but have never played a down. A lot of people don't realize what it takes to play football. This has prepared me mentally to handle whatever is thrown at me in baseball. Having to persevere through summer workouts and two-a-days was a rough experience.  Football has gotten me into a great mental state to realize that whatever challenges are thrown at me or whatever I am going through I can do it. I believe in myself and my ability because of what football has taught me and put me through, so I think football has helped me the most mentally to be a better baseball player.

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
I think the hardest part about playing more than one sport is finding the time to do things away from the sport you are playing.  Sports are time consuming, but if you love the sports you play I don't think that it should be a bad thing that it takes up a lot of your time. Sports are amazing and they are good for you. I don't see any disadvantages in playing more than one sport. You will be more athletic, meet new people, experience different things. I just can't really find any disadvantages of playing multiple sports.

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
I have never been against specializing in one sport, the only thing is, you better be really good at the sport you specialize in. I understand if you love one sport and don't enjoy any other ones than by all means specialize in that one sport. I just think that you get better in all aspects of your life by playing more than one sport. You learn time management, meet new people, make new relationships, and experience new things. You will come to find out that all the sports you play will somehow help you be better at another sport. The workouts you do in one sport might be good for that sport but also be really beneficial in another sport. I encourage people to play more than one sport but at the end of the day if you only enjoy one sport, stick with that one.

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
My plan when it comes to playing college athletics is to compete at the highest level. Sports have been a huge part of my family and my life for as long as I can remember. I could not imagine my life without it. Sports keeps my head on straight and gives me goals and something to look forward to, and I want to keep that in my life for as long as possible. I have opportunities to play football in college which I am very grateful for, but I would also love to play baseball in college. Both sports are amazing and to be able to compete at the highest level in one of them would be truly amazing. I know I have it in me to do either one of them, and I can't wait to see what God has planned for me in the future.

Gavin Ehrhardt OF / LHP / Avon, OH / 2023

Football: D-II first-team all-state linebacker

Baseball: Outfielder, 22nd-rated senior

At-A-Glance: An honorable mention two-way player in Division I baseball as a junior, Ehrhardt is committed to play baseball in college at the University of Cincinnati..

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
Playing multiple sports in high school has developed me into a better overall athlete along with giving me the ability to further build my confidence because of the high-stress situations in both sports.

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
Football has brought me mental and physical toughness to the diamond. It has developed me into a better teammate and leader. Because of football I am fearless while playing baseball.

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
The hardest part in playing multiple sports is definitely training for one sport while in season with the other, more specifically training for baseball while in football season. Football is very exhausting and leaves little to no time to focus on baseball. This is a big negative but it also gave me time to get my mind off baseball and to further enjoy my time playing football.

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
You are missing out if you decide to give up on a sport you love in order to focus on one sport alone. It would have been the biggest regret of my life if I decided to quit football to only focus on baseball. I have gained way more than I have lost by playing football. You become a better person and build relationships that will last a lifetime. You never get to experience high school again so why not make the most of it.

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
I have signed to play baseball at the University of Cincinnati. I plan to compete everyday in order to better myself and my teammates. I am extremely excited for what the next chapter of my athletic career holds. Go Bearcats!

Heath Fetchik C / 3B / Chardon, OH / 2023

Football: D-III first-team all-state linebacker

Baseball: Catcher, 298th-rated senior

At-A-Glance: The 6-0 192-pound two-sport athlete has committed to playing baseball at Division II Seton Hill in Greensburg, Pa.

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
I feel that it has helped me learn a better work ethic and to be a better teammate. I also think each sport has benefits, football teaches toughness, and baseball is more of a mental side of competing.

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
I think football taught me a kind of killer instinct that baseball cannot and also how to prepare for games.

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
The hardest part is definitely just the amount of work and, although there may be some disadvantages as far as time, it is definitely worth it to play both.

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
I would say do whatever you feel is right but I would really recommend playing multiple sports because it will help you with many aspects of life.

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
I am playing baseball at Seton Hill University.

Matthew Frye RHP / RHP / Western Brown, OH / 2023

Football: D-III first-team all-state wide receiver

Baseball: RHP, 347th-rated senior

At-A-Glance: Frye has committed to play both baseball and football at Mount St. Joseph’s.

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
Playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to me because I think each sport helps you get better for another sport, you get to meet so many new teammates and coaches, and you learn so many life lessons by playing multiple sports.

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
Playing football helps me out as a baseball player, obviously, by improving fitness and coordination. But it also brings competitiveness from the football field to the baseball diamond. One similarity I found is playing safety and center field. Both of these positions help me in each sport because they both are running after a ball and going to catch it.

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
The hardest part about playing more than one sport is the amount of time you have. You don’t get a lot of breaks and once you get done with one sport, you go right into the next. I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad thing but it can be hard on some people.

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
What I would say to an athlete wanting to specialize in one sport, is to give other sports a try. Each sport benefits each other in some way, and it’s been shown that playing multiple sports improves overall athleticism and helps you be a better athlete in the sport you want to specialize in.

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
My plans for college athletics is to continue playing baseball and football at Mount St. Joseph’s University. I was having trouble picking which sport I wanted to continue playing in college, and ended up getting the opportunity to play both at the Mount.

Caleb Hadley C / 3B / Warren JFK, OH / 2024

Football: D-VII second-team all-state quarterback

Baseball: Catcher, unranked junior

At-A-Glance: A second-team honoree in Division IV baseball as a sophomore, Hadley, who also plays basketball, is uncommitted and uncertain what sport he will pursue in college, baseball or football.

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
I think playing multiple sports is beneficial to me because I get to stay active and experience many opportunities. Playing multiple sports helps me stay active and keeps my body healthy. With playing football and baseball I’ve been able to play in a lot of games, and play in a lot of amazing environments. I’ve played in three state title games, one in baseball and two in football.

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
I think that football helps your body overall. I think that football also creates mental toughness and it helps you keep going. I think football gives me a little break from baseball but also keeps me ready.

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
The hardest part of playing multiple sports is management of time. To balance practicing both sports is difficult but I think this teaches you a great lesson down the road. Also, when you play football that takes away from your fall of being able to practice and work out for baseball.

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
What I would say to kids wanting to specialize in one sport is that they should try and play at least two sports. Playing multiple sports teaches you many valuable lessons. It also gives you many opportunities to experience things that you wouldn’t be able to experience playing just one sport. One last thing I would say about this is the more you deal with uncomfortable situations the more comfortable you become so go out of your comfort zone.

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
My plans are to go to school and play either football or baseball and major in sport management.

Krayton Kern OF / RHP / Archbold, OH / 2023

Football: D-V third-team all-state punter

Baseball: Outfielder, 356th-rated senior

At-A-Glance: A second-team all-state soccer player, Kern, who was a Division III honorable mention outfielder in baseball as a junior, has committed to continue in the sport of baseball at Adrian College.

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
Playing multiple sports allows you to rest certain parts of your body during the various seasons. It also allows you to experience different situations with another set of teammates. We also get coached by different eyes which allows us to grow as athletes.

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
Football helps with baseball in terms of the strength and conditioning programs. Football also puts you in pressure situations that force better judgment and quick decisions. Both sports are "play by play" sports that require you to always be thinking ahead.

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
Some disadvantages of playing more than one sport are the time away from your main sport in which some of your competition might be getting "ahead" of you. It also limits the "travel club" opportunity in which college scouts recruit heavily, so you may not get as much exposure in one sport. Playing more than one sport can also limit time in other extra-curricular activities and often leaves you crammed for study time as well.

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
Playing multiple sports creates many new friendships, and ultimately sparks memories that will last a lifetime.

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
I plan on playing baseball after high school at Adrian College.

Zebulin Kinsey OF / RHP / Toronto, OH / 2025

Football: D-VII third-team all-state quarterback

Baseball: Outfielder, 25th-rated sophomore

At-A-Glance: As a freshman Kinsey batted .416 to earn honorable mention accolades in Division IV baseball. Now a sophomore, Kinsey is still uncommitted.

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
Playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to me because it always keeps me doing something and it helps get my name out there. It also helps me start to manage my time and you get to have twice as much fun playing two sports instead of one.

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
Playing football helps me as a baseball player because I’m a quarterback and I get to be the leader of my team. Baseball is all about leadership. I’ve played on baseball teams that lacked leadership and they just fell apart. Playing football also helps me as a baseball player because as a quarterback it makes my arm stronger and the sport in general helps me maintain my athleticism.

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
The hardest part about playing two sports in my opinion is getting back into each sport after getting done with the other. After baseball season, I’ve had trouble throwing a football just because of the different throwing motions and vice versa. I personally haven’t come across any disadvantages of playing multiple sports in high school.

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
One thing I would definitely tell a high school athlete that is focusing on one sport instead of playing multiple, is that you only live through high school one time so you may as well play as many sports as you can. I do know that if you love one sport more than the other, you should start focusing on getting better in that sport, but you can definitely still play multiple sports.

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
My plan for playing college athletics is to get most if not all of my college paid for so I don't have to graduate with debt. I’m really wanting to meet teammates that I can get really close with and that will eventually be around for a long time. My ultimate goal is to play in the pros and I will work as hard as I can to make it there, but it’s ultimately God's plan.

Kaden Kiser LHP / 1B / Hamilton Township, OH / 2023

Football: D-III first-team all-state defensive lineman

Baseball: LHP, 256th-rated senior

At-A-Glance: A 6-5 205-pounder, Kiser has committed to pitch at Bryant & Stratton, a Division II Junior College in Solon, Ohio.

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
I think playing more than one sport is beneficial because of the overall exposure and it’s also beneficial because it’s teaching you how to build bonds with other teammates and builds personal growth

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
Playing football helped improve my lateral movement and helped me become a better leader because I was in control of a bigger group of people

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
The hardest part about playing more than one sport is the determination and commitment to practice and making sure your body is in the best shape week in and week out.

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
I would say never let anyone tell you what you can and can’t do. Do what you want and no matter what happens nobody can tell you that you can’t.

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
I plan on playing baseball at Bryant & Stratton College.

Will Kocher C / OF / Kings, OH / 2023

Football: D-II first-team all-state quarterback

Baseball: Catcher, 87th-rated senior

At-A-Glance: A standout behind the plate in baseball, Kocher led Kings to the Division II state semifinals in football this past fall before losing a 52-49 heartbreaker to eventual state champion Toledo Central Catholic. Kocher is uncommitted with plans to play college football.

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
Playing multiple sports in high school is very beneficial. I feel like I am mastering different skills at each sport but they make you better at both sports. Plus, it’s a different friend group that you get to bond with this entire time and it makes each relationship more special.

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
As a catcher and playing quarterback, you have to be a leader on the field. The game runs through you. You need to make sure that everybody’s energy is up, and everybody is focused on what they are doing. You have to be the leader on the field.

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
The hardest part about playing multiple sports is usually I don’t want one of them to end. It was obviously heartbreaking at the end of our football season this year, and I did not want to stop playing. I wanted to play that last game. But you just have to move onto the next sport.

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
I believe that they should not do that. With only playing one sport, you are going to get burnt out. Playing multiple sports for at least your freshman and sophomore years will give you a wide variety of things that you can do. You will gain skills that you didn’t think you could gain and you will build a lot more relationships with people.

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
My goal is to play Division I college football. I want to go to a program that I know is going to max out my potential. And I want to be in a competitive quarterback room wherever I go.

Owen McKoon C / 3B / Perry, OH / 2025

Football: D-V second-team all-state linebacker

Baseball: Catcher, 34th-rated sophomore

At-A-Glance: The fifth-ranked 2025 catcher in Ohio is uncommitted with plans to play baseball after high school.

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
I think it is beneficial because it keeps me in amazing shape.  I am working on my endurance and speed by playing football and also basketball.

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
It helps me a lot with mental toughness because of the constant clashing between me and the opposing lineman. There are defensive practices when I have no subs for me and we do 50 plays straight. I also can't forget about the many up-downs we do. This all has prepared me to catch over 60 games, including Perry varsity and summer baseball with our B2 program

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
The hardest part about playing more than one sport is they sometimes overlap with each other with practice. Usually, I would have football and baseball practice on the same day.

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
I would say be a multi-sport athlete because college coaches want their kids to be athletic, and in my opinion, I always want to be busy and also have fun playing games and practicing with my friends. Also, it is good to be coached by many different coaches.

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
My plan for college athletics is to play baseball.

Cody Miller OF / OF / North Royalton, OH / 2024

Football: D-II second-team all-state running back

Baseball: Outfielder, 78th-rated junior

At-A-Glance: Miller, the 13th-ranked 2024 outfielder in Ohio, is uncommitted but with aspirations to play college baseball.

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
I feel that playing multiple sports in high school is very beneficial to me. Playing multiple sports always keeps me busy along with keeping my body balanced as both the sports that I do work on different parts of my body. Along with that, it really makes you a well-rounded person overall.

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
Playing football helps me with the strength portion of baseball along with the speed. Speed and strength are much needed in both football and baseball.

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
One part about playing multiple sports that is very challenging is that at some point you can overwork yourself by doing too much. The only disadvantage that I see is that it is very easy to wear yourself out if you do not properly take care of and rest your body.

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
One thing that I would tell a future athlete that is specializing in one sport is to definitely do multiple sports. One reason I say this is because by only focusing on one sport you are strictly limiting your options if you are looking to play sports at the next level. Along with that, one sport only occurs during one part of the year so you may find yourself doing nothing at some point of your off-season. If you are able, I would suggest playing multiple sports in high school.

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
I plan on going on to play baseball in college. As of right now I am still deciding where I want to play.

Carson Parker SS / RHP / Lima Central Catholic, OH / 2024

Football: D-VII second-team all-state quarterback

Baseball: Shortstop, unranked junior

At-A-Glance: An honorable mention D-IV infielder who stole 22 bases as a sophomore, Parker is undecided on his college future.

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
I think playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to me because I get to learn more skills in each sport and take the skills that I learn from one sport and use them in the other sport which makes me a more versatile athlete in all of my sports. I also think it reduces my risk of injury because I don’t overuse the same body part/muscle. I won’t have burnout by playing just one sport.

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
Personally, since I am a quarterback, I learn how to be a better leader and make sure everyone else is on the same page.

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
The hardest part about playing multiple sports is always being so busy and it’s hard for your body to find some rest. It also makes it hard to work at another sport in the offseason because I am always in a season working in a different sport

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
I would tell them to consider playing another sport because it would make them a more versatile athlete in the one sport they were gonna focus on.

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
I plan on going to play college football somewhere and if that doesn’t work out I would consider playing baseball as well.

Wade Pauley 3B / SS / Morgan, OH / 2023

Football: D-IV second-team all-state defensive lineman

Baseball: Third baseman, 378th-rated senior

At-A-Glance: The 6-3 225-pound left-handed hitter, who excelled on the gridiron in helping Morgan reach the playoffs, is uncommitted with plans to play baseball in college.

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
Playing multiple sports really helped me become more athletic and versatile.

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
Football really gave me some of that grit and swagger I play with on the diamond.

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
The hardest part about playing two sports is finding free time. I leave my house at 7 a.m. for school and don’t get home until 9 p.m., sometimes it’s later. Another disadvantage would be that your body takes a beating. I play football in the fall and take winter off to let my body heal before playing baseball in the spring.

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
Play as many sports as possible. A lot of these other sports can benefit you in the long run and improve your game.

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
I plan to play baseball in college while majoring in education. I am currently uncommitted and don’t plan on committing any time soon.

Tre Rex LHP / OF / Harrison Central, OH / 2023

Football: D-V honorable mention all-state wide receiver

Baseball: LHP, 96th-rated senior

At-A-Glance: The seventh-ranked 2023 southpaw in Ohio, who was 7-1 with a 0.97 ERA last spring with 90 strikeouts in 50 innings on the mound for Harrison Central, is an Akron baseball commit.

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
I think that playing multiple sports keeps me in shape all year around and helps me use my body in different ways that can be beneficial in both sports

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
Playing football teaches me how to use my hips. As a receiver and corner you really have to be loose and use your hips which translates to using your hips on the mound

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
Some disadvantages are that sports are very time consuming, sometimes one takes away from another if you have practice in the summer.

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
I think that being a multi-sport athlete can really help you in any sport that you do and keep you in shape all year around

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
I plan to specialize in baseball.

Brady Rice RHP / 3B / Eaton, OH / 2023

Football: D-IV third-team all-state defensive lineman

Baseball: RHP, 90th-rated senior

At-A-Glance: A second-team Division II all-state pitcher who struck out 104 batters as a junior, is uncommitted with an ambition of playing baseball in college.

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
Playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to me in many ways. One way is that it helps me not get burned out of a specific sport, whether it be baseball or football. Another way is that playing different sports requires me to train my body in different ways which make me become a better athlete overall and helps me in both baseball and football. Lastly, it helps me prevent injuries that can be caused by overuse. If I were to just focus on baseball and football 24/7 365 days a year, then I would most likely overuse certain parts of my body. But since I play baseball and football, my body is able to rest and recover from one season while I am taking part in another.

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
Football helps me as a baseball player in multiple ways. First, it helps my body become stronger and faster which makes me a better athlete and in turn makes me a better baseball player. Second, football helps me develop a competitiveness and mental mindset that can only be developed from football, and bringing this competitiveness and mindset to baseball only makes me better as a player. Third, football helps me develop great teamwork skills and bonds that can only be made from football. Football is also the sport that requires the most teamwork and this helps me become a better teammate on my baseball team and helps me become a better leader for my baseball team.

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
The hardest part about playing more than one sport is being able to balance everything that comes with playing multiple sports. For example, for me, summer is always the hardest time when it comes to playing baseball and football. It is the hardest because football is starting to ramp up during this time but I also have multiple baseball tournaments in the summer and the two sports clash. I then have to miss workouts for football because of my baseball schedule. The main disadvantage that I see in playing baseball and football is that my body becomes very tight and compacted while playing football because that is how football players train. This then hurts me when getting back into baseball because I have to spend a good period of time loosening myself up again in order to get back to being the baseball player I am.

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
To any future athlete who is thinking about specializing in just one sport, do not do it. Playing multiple sports is beneficial to you in many ways, especially in the ways that I mentioned in the first question. Also, many college coaches want players who play multiple sports because multiple-sport athletes are the best athletes, they are able to handle the most chaotic and intense things since they have to balance all their sports at one time, and they are able to adapt and overcome better than athletes who specialize in just one sport.

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
In college, I plan to play Division 1 baseball. I just had surgery in November on my shoulder so I am currently recovering from that and I am doing great. I am doing everything I need to to get back out on the baseball field and come back stronger and better than I was before my injury. This injury has been very frustrating but I have learned many lessons from it while overcoming it and I cannot wait to get back on the field and play the game I love.

Tavien St. Clair RHP / SS / Bellefontaine, OH / 2025

Football: D-III second-team all-state quarterback

Baseball: RHP, 12th-rated sophomore

At-A-Glance: St. Clair, who was awarded honorable mention honors as a freshman two-way player in baseball, has the desire to play football in college.

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
The two sports I play compliment each other.

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
Baseball helps me in football to always think ahead and think of what my job is on the next play. Football helps me be more physical and tough in baseball.

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
To be honest, there aren’t many disadvantages to playing both other than the summer time when you are playing and practicing both sports. All that happens is your arm gets a little sore but other than that there is nothing bad.

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
Playing two sports is more beneficial just because it will teach you to be more mentally tough and learn to adapt.

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
In college I plan on playing football and being a great QB.

Danny Stoddard OF / OF / Medina, OH / 2024

Football: D-I first-team all-state quarterback

Baseball: Outfielder, unranked junior

At-A-Glance: A starting center fielder as a sophomore in baseball, the speedy Stoddard was the 2022 Division I Offensive Player of the Year in Ohio after throwing for 5,035 yards and 58 touchdowns while rushing for 692 yards and 12 TDs in leading Medina to a regional semifinal berth.

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
I think playing multiple sports is beneficial because it keeps me active, lets me learn from different coaches and helps me develop teamwork skills

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
Football helps me as a baseball player because it keeps my arm active as a quarterback and teaches me how to be a leader. It helps me develop a stronger and conditioned body

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
The hardest part about playing more than one sport is that it is time consuming and you may not be able to reach your full potential in one sport

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
My advice would be to play as many sports as you can because you don’t want to burn yourself out on one sport. You can learn from different coaches and work with different teammates. Sports just aren’t the same after high school and it may be your last time playing on an organized team so it’s good to get the experience.

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
My plans for my college athletics is to get a scholarship and play at the highest level for those four years.

Connor Walendzak OF / SS / Perrysburg, OH / 2023

Football: D-I first-team all-state running back.

Baseball: Outfielder, 26th-rated senior

At-A-Glance: A first-team all-state selection in baseball as a junior, Walendzak had previously committed to play baseball at Purdue but is now a Toledo football commit. The first-team Division I all-state running back was a finalist for Mr. Football this past season.

How do you feel playing multiple sports in high school is beneficial to you?
I felt like playing multiple sports in high school allowed me to develop more athleticism and a feel for both games. Playing both football and baseball allowed me to translate different movements and traits back and forth between the two.

In what ways does playing football help you out as a baseball player?
Playing football allowed me to work on my agility and change of direction as well as giving me a toughness mentality while playing baseball.

What is the hardest part about playing more than one sport and any disadvantages that you see?
Playing multiple sports can make it hard to specialize and train a large amount for a sport and it definitely puts a lot more on your plate.

What would you say to a future high school athlete who is thinking about specializing/focusing on one sport instead of being a multi-sport athlete?
I would tell them to do what they want to do and what they want to pursue. If they want to play multiple sports, they should do that. If they want to play only one, then that is good, too.

What are your plans when it comes to playing college athletics?
I am playing football at the University of Toledo in college.
