Ohio Insider: 2017 Future Games - Team Ohio Preview

One of the premier events of the year will take place this week when the Future Games is held on Wednesday through Saturday in Westfield, Ind., just north of Indianapolis.

The best-of-the-best event features the top uncommitted prospects from the Class of 2019 as well as 2020 and 2021 from the Prep Baseball Report coverage area of 30-plus states. There will be 20 teams competing with more than 130 colleges from across the country in attendance.

This marks the sixth year of the Future Games with the talent level on the rise each time. How impressive is it?

Dillon LifrieriA year ago Dillon Lifrieri of Wilton High School in Connecticut, an Arkansas commit, was elected the Most Valuable Player. A member of the 2018 class, Lifrieri is ranked 7th in New England by PBR.

In 2015, Sam Carlson of Barnsville High School in Minnesota was the MVP. Carlson, a University of Florida pitching commit, was  taken in the second round (55th overall selection) by the Mariners in this year’s Major League Baseball Draft. Carlson signed with the Mariners for $2 million.

A year prior, event MVP Duncan Pence of Farrragut High School in Tennessee was a 33rd-round selection of the Mets.

Future Games 2013 MVP Nolan Watson, a right-handed pitcher at Lawrence North (Indiana) High School, was selected in the first round and 33rd overall by the Kansas City Royals in the 2015 draft. Watson is currently on the roster for Burlington, Idaho Falls in the Advanced Rookie League.

“I can remember the first Future Games (in 2011),” said Chris Valentine, executive director for PBR Ohio, Michigan, Ontario and New England. “We only had four states in attendance and around 40 coaches present. We struggled just to put together a roster for Team Ohio that first year.

“Now the Future Games has become THE event to attend for a rising high school sophomore or junior. Nearly every major Division I college program is in attendance. The atmosphere is unlike any other.”

An Ohio team with a roster of 22 players from throughout the state will again be one of the squads competing this year at Grand Park, a state-of-the-art 22-field baseball complex. It starts with an evaluation day on Wednesday in which position players are put through a showcase workout that includes running 60s, batting practice and field evaluation.

Teams will play games on Thursday through Saturday. Ohio will play Pennsylvania in game nine of 10 being played on Thursday starting at 5 p.m, Ohio takes on Ontario on Friday at 4 p.m. with the final game for Ohio set for 5 p.m. on Saturday against Michigan.

The right-hander has a low effort delivery with loose, clean arm action. Ball comes out of his hand well and produces an easy, mid-80s fastball (topped at 87 mph). Secondary stuff has potential to swing and miss stuff. Breaking ball has solid depth while working on an 11/5 plane at 69-73 mph. Changeup has similar run to his fastball at 73-77 mph. A lefty swinger that has impressive natural tools. Stays fluid throughout loading sequence and takes a mostly level path to the baseball. Swings with the intent to do damage. Very good when his barrel flows to the middle of the field but has a tendency to pull of the baseball. Flashed impressive pop when he stayed through the ball. Actions are fluid in the infield with above average glove skills. Displayed plus arm strength across the diamond. Would be aided by creating angles in his pre fielding footwork.

Brody Ware RHP / SS / North Canton Hoover, OH / 2019

6/6/17 Scouting Report
A right-handed pitching prospect in the 2019 class. A smaller frame but a very live arm. Works through a high-¾ slot and is mechanically efficient. Works off his 83-85 mph fastball and has two impressive breaking balls. His curveball works on an 11/5 plane and was very sharp throughout his outing, sitting 69-70 mph. Slider works across the plate with depth at 75-77 mph. Ware filled up the zone with fastball and curveball, getting hitters to chase out of the zone with his slider. Only showed his change-up once but it was nasty. The pitch had heavy run to it.
