Lead by number one prospect Daniel Corona (Baylor) and top ten mate Elijah Galyon (Seymour), the Tennessee 2021 middle infielder class currently has six D1 commits and a deep log jam of prospects remaining on the board.  2019 Future Gamer Cameron Lee (Summit) currently leads an uncommitted pack of dynamic athletes after showcasing a high-upside skillset, centered around explosive speed.  

Gaven Jones (Daniel Boone) was the only newcomer to break into the Top 100 prospects after a strong showing at Preseason East TN Showcase.  There are several left-handed sticks in the ranks, like Joseph Waters (Franklin) and biggest rise Ben Severance (Ravenwood), then throw in switch hitters, like Kaelan Culpepper (St. Benedict) and Spencer Williams (Heritage) to get a bit of everything.  Below Scouting Director Colton Provey breaks down four uncommitted SS among the top 55 overall, one newcomer, and three risers.

Middle Infielders

Cameron Lee | SS | Summit | Rank: 38
The 6-foot, 172-pound middle infielder had made some solid jumps since a good outing at PBR Future Games.  Lee has put on nearly twenty pounds filling out his frame since last summer, but still maintaining his quick burst (6.67 in the 60).  Sound footwork and hands with strong arm.  Becoming more and more consistent with the bat, but puts pressure on defenses and can handle the stick.  

Kaelan Culpepper | SS | St. Benedict | Rank: 44
The 5-foot-11, 165-pound switch hitting middle infielder has a wiry, long frame and can swing it from both sides of the dish.  Advanced defensive movements and some electric bat speed, stronger from the right side.  Feel for the barrel and stays in the zone. Soft quick hands and can play all three infield positions.  

Joseph Waters | SS | Franklin | Rank: 52
The 6-foot-1, 175-pound middle infielder was very limited in the 2020 campaign due to a wrist bruise leading up to the season; however, Waters is the top uncommitted lefty-swinging prospect up the middle.  An above average bat with some juice, barreling balls gap to gap with natural loft.  Gets extra base hits in bunches and knack for the barrel.  Defensively, Waters has soft hands with seamless transitions and solid arm, tools to stay at SS.

Carson Garner | SS/3B | Franklin | Rank: 54
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Garner shares the left side with Waters for Franklin, usually at the hot corner.  With Waters banged up, Garner handled the SS duties and did an admirably job.  Solid frame with proportional strength, smooth hands and good arm with carry on throws.  Offensively, puts together quality at bats with gap to gap power.  Worked two walks, stole two bases, and barreled a ball to CF while coming around to score once on Opening Day vs Summit.  Due to frame and solid offense, Projects to move to 3B at next level, but above average defender at SS if needed.  

 

Newcomers in Top 100

Gaven Jones | SS | Daniel Boone | Rank: 93
5-foot-11, 180-pound shortstop made a strong debut at the Preseason East TN Showcase this January to break into the rankings. Impressive round of batting practice, spraying line drives to all fields with good barrel feel. Short, simple load and generates good bat speed. Defensively, solid hands with athletic feet and good arm strength. Table setter top of the order bat who can play both middle infield positions.  

Risers

Ben Severance | 2B/3B | Ravenwood | Rank: 65 (+36)
The 5-foot-10, 165-pound utilityman can handle all three infield positions with soft hands to play up the middle and arm strength to play the left side. Bounces around a deep Ravenwood infield. Lefty stick, who projects to hit for a lot of average, generates good bat speed and swing repeatability.  Projects to develop more power in frame.  Good speed on the base paths (4.28 Home to First).  

Isaac Whitaker | SS | Ezell-Harding | Rank: 78 (+6)
The 5-foot-10, 155-pound infielder broke into the rankings after a great PBR debut at the Hit After Hit Fall Scout Day. Whitaker is a quick, twitch athlete with great hands and seamless transitions up the middle.  Short, compact swing with good bat speed and gap to gap power potential.  Stays short and gets great natural loft with some solid pull side power.  Light on his feet and runs well (60: 6.97).  

Luke Fleming | SS | Beech | Rank: 114 (+9)
The 6-foot, 165-pound dual sport athlete has continued to make steady climbs after a solid showing at Preseason All-State Showcase. Has made improvements at the dish generating better bat speed and incorporating the lower half more.  A lot of hard line drives during his BP round.  Fluid in the field, making all the plays to go with improved arm strength.  Long, wiry frame with good projection.
