Another star-level prospect in the state’s loaded 2023 group, Head finished his high school career at Homewood-Flossmoor with yet another successful season under his belt. One of the most well-known name’s on a national scale, Head slashed .485/.568/.814 with 10 doubles, two triples, and six home runs. He struck out five times all spring, as opposed to 15 walks, and scored 35 times, swiping 31 bags as well. Aside from his silky-smooth left-handed swing, Head’s an elite defender in center field, using his advanced speed to cover ground effortlessly in the outfield. A Clemson signee, Head is likely to hear his name called on the first day of the MLB Draft in July.
Clemson commit. Currently the No. 1 ranked prospect in Illinois, No. 23 nationally. Ultra-athletic, 6-foot, 180-pound frame, round shoulders with a developed lower-half, present strength with room to add on more as he continues to mature. Started in center field and hit out of the leadoff spot, finished the day 4-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, two runs scored and a walk. The left-handed hitter has a loose/athletic swing, staying short and direct to the ball with an aggressive approach in this look, going after the first couple pitches in his at-bats consistently. He has game-changing speed, jumping out of the box almost immediately after contact and is always looking to take the extra base, stealing two bags in this look while also recording a 4.13 down the line on a turn. Elite defender in the outfield with ulta-quick jumps, covering ground with ease. He boasts confidence and smooth actions to pair with a high-level arm, playing with back-spin and accuracy to his targets with clear life out of the hand. High-level 2023 draft follow.
Clemson commit. The top player in the state’s class of 2023 and one of the top overall, Head showed why last week going 8-for-13 (.615) with two home runs, two triples, two doubles, nine RBIs, six runs scored, three walks and three stolen bases. In their game against Lockport, he went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs, a run and two stolen bases. He added two hits, one being a home run with two RBIs, two runs scored and two walks in their game against No. 14 Sandburg. He went an impressive 2-for-3 with two triples, three RBIs, and a walk in their win against Lockport. To round out his stellar week, he went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs, three runs scored, and a stolen base in their win over Crete-Monee.
Clemson commit. Currently ranked No. 1 in Illinois and No. 23 in the country. 5-foot-11, 180-pound, strong, high-athletic, quick-twitch frame. Has added all kinds of strength to his lower half in recent months. Hit leadoff and played center field. High-level athlete and speed shows up in all aspects of the game. Clean out of the box, gets to top end speed in a hurry, crisp easy runner that covers all kinds of ground in the outfield. Arm continues to tick up as well, plays clean, accurate and flashes carry. Offensively, finished 0-for-3 on the day but was on the barrel throughout. Took a number of quality intentful swings on the day including an 0-0 breaking ball against a left-hander in his final at-bat; saw it early, was on-time and fouled it straight back to the screen. Ended up grounding out in all three at-bats; 4.07 and 4.12 down the line. Barreled his second ball right back up the middle but it was snagged by the pitcher for a 1-3 groundout. Athletic and calm in the box, minimal wasted movement, athletic, fast hands, direct path that works on top of the baseball and should create all kinds of backspin off the barrel moving forward. One of the top athletes in the country and has been drawing considerable draft buzz leading up to the 2023 draft.
The top-three prospects in Illinois remain unchanged and all three are high-level draft follows this spring in OF Dillon Head (Homewood-Flossmoor; Clemson), RHP Zander Mueth (Belleville East; Ole Miss) and CIF/COF George Wolkow (Downers Grove North; South Carolina). Head, the No. 1 prospect in the state, is a lock down left/left center field defender and one of the top athletes in the country with a loose, athletic swing that flashes sneaky juice. He will be sure to have a number of pro scouts eyes on him throughout the spring.
Positional Profile: OF
Body: 5-10, 155-pounds. Strong, athletic frame with more physical projection to come.
Hit: LHH. Balanced setup, weight starts with a slight shift onto back leg, smooth load, short stride to even. Simple swing, loose athletic hands, stays short and inside to the baseball, level bat path, confident line drive approach. Top-of-the-order profile; strong bat-to-ball skills.
Power: 83 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: LH. OF - 82 mph. Short arm action, over-the-top slot. True throws with carry to the bag.
Defense: True center field profile. Confident outfield actions. Fluid feet that work in rhythm, soft hands, clean exchange with some length to release, plays through the baseball.
Run: 6.79 runner in the 60.
Positional Profile: OF/LHP
Body: 5-foot-7, 140-pounds. Athletic, live-body.
Defense: Soft hands, quick, fluid footwork, clean exchange, athletic actions, plays through the baseball and gains ground towards target.
Arm: LH. OF - 80 mph. Loose, over the top arm action, accurate arm, shows carry.
Hit: LHH. Balanced set up, short stride, incorporates lower half and maintains balance. Compact swing, loose hands, fast bat, extension through contact, consistent hard line-drive contact.
Power: 78 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Run: 7.01 runner in the 60. Above-average runner for age.
3.25.18 - 5-foot-4, 119-pound, left-handed hitting outfielder. At the plate, athletic, open setup, minimal load, short toe tap trigger, maintains balance. Quick trigger athlete, short, level bat path, repeatable swing, utilized all fields with line drive approach, fluid rhythm. Present bat speed, exit velocity topped 74 mph from a tee. Defensively plays through the ball, soft hands, quick exchange, short, loose arm action, high ¾ slot. Throws topped 74 mph from the outfield. 7.43 runner in the 60.
Michigan commit, currently ranked No. 182 in the national 2023 rankings. 5-foot-11 175-pound, athletic build. Highly athletic, confident and competitive. Athleticism is at the top of the charts, above-average runner, plays fast on both sides of ball. Offensively he stands tall in the box, wide base, he has a slight leg kick trigger. Swing is loose, short, compact, and strong; bat path is direct to contact, flicks line drive to all fields; flashed power to the pull side. Defensively gets great reads and efficient angles in center field. Has an above-average arm that has continued to ascend. High-level, left/left prospect with pro potential down the road.
