On February 23rd, PBR Indiana hosted one of its largest showcases on its annual calendar: Preseason All-State Underclass. This invite-only showcase brings together the state's best talent in its 2021-2023 classes, and all that talent was on display at Roundtripper Sports Academy over the weekend. A total of 101 of Indiana's best underclassmen made it to Westfield on Saturday. 

Today, we look at some of the top performances coming out of Saturday’s Preseason All-State Underclass.

PITCHERS

+ Arguably the most impressive performance of the event came from 2022 RHP Andrew Dutkanych (Brebeuf HS). At 6-foot-2, 185 pounds, Dutkanych ran his fastball up to 91 mph, consistently sitting 89-90. He has a chance to have a legitimate three-pitch in the near future with a curveball and changeup to go along with the fastball. At the event his curveball was between an 11/5-12/6 shape with sharp break and thrown for a strike at 72-73. He also mixed in a 79-80 mph slider which is still in the beginning stages. His changeup is thrown with fastball arm speed at 76-79 with some arm side run. 

+ Indiana commit Luke Hayden (2021, Edgewood HS) was electric during his bullpen session. His fastball sat 87-89 with lots of life and deception. The breaking ball is a potential plus out pitch at 76-78 with tight spin and power action. Hayden, who stands in at 6-feet, 190 pounds works out of the stretch and pitches from a high 3/4 arm action with quick arm speed.

+ Purdue commit Carter Doorn (Illiana-Christian HS) is a 2021 right-hander that pitches from a long, high 3/4 arm action and quick arm speed. Doorn showed lots of life with run on his 84-86 mph fastball. Its easy to see a big jump in velocity coming this spring/summer.  The 66-69 mph curveball has 10/4 shape with late break.

+ Cincinnati commit Garrett Harker (Lebanon HS, 2021) stands in at 5-foot-11, 175 pounds. Harker commanded the zone with an 84-86 mph fastball with run. He spins the breaking ball for a strike at 70-73 with hard, late action.

+ 2021 LHP Thomas O'Connor of Mooresville HS sat 85-86 during his bullpen session with a 75-77 mph breaking ball showing 1/7 shape and late action; a potential out pitch at the next level. O'Connor is a physical 6-foot-3, 200 pounder that pitches from a long, high 3/4 arm action. 

+ 2022 RHP Brady Ginaven (Munster HS) stands in at 6-foot-4, 200 pounds. The right-hander pitches from a long, high 3/4 arm action with quick arm speed.  His fastball topped out at 86 mph, sitting 83-84 for a strike. His breaking ball has 11/5 shape with potential power action at 67-69. 

+ Khal Stephen (2021, Seeger HS) is an athletic 6-foot-3, 180 pound right-hander with a fastball sitting 85-86 with run. His breaking ball has the makings of a plus pitch at 73-75 with late, power type action and tight spin from 10/4 shape. Stephen pitches from a long, high 3/4 arm action with quick arm speed.

+ David Novak (2021, Zionsville HS) is an athletic 6-foot-1, 190 pound C/3B/P. He had the third highest fastball velocity at the event at 87 mph with a quick arm action. 

+ 2021 Luke Leverton, a 6-foot-1, 210 pound RHP from Seton Catholic HS showed life on his 84-85 mph fastball.  He showcased two breaking balls a 67-68 mph curveball and 72-76 mph slider. 

+ Zionsville HS 2021 Nate Dohm has a physical frame at 6-foot-3, 218 pounds. Dohm pitches from a drop and drive delivery with a short, 3/4 arm action and above average arm speed. The right-hander sat 82-84, topping out at 85.  His breaking ball was 72-73 with tight spin and 10/4 shape.

HITTERS

LEFT HANDED

+ The top hitter of the event was 2021 left-handed hitting catcher Austin Bode (Columbus North HS). The Louisville commit has an advanced approach with an easy stroke that stays on plane. He possesses strong hands and bat speed, which helps produce consistent gap-to-gap power. Bode registered a high exit velocity of 96 mph at the event. 

+ 2023 OF Max Clark (Franklin HS) is an ultra-athletic left-handed hitter with plus feel. He showcased quick bat speed for his age, with high barrel awareness and the ability to drive the ball to all fields. The 5-foot-11, 158 pounder shows tons of athleticism and twitch in all facets of his game. With continued maturity and added strength, Clark has the chance to be one of the top prospects in his class. 

+ Purdue commit, 2021 SS Ty Gill (Valparaiso HS) shows athleticism from the left-side of the box with a quick bat. Gill has great barrel control with loose hands and twitch in the swing, consistently driving the ball to his pull-side. Defensively, the 6-foot-1, 155 pounder, shows feel for the SS position with soft hands, quick feet and the ability to throw from multiple arm angles. 

+ 2021 OF Jared Comia (Hanover Central HS) is a wiry 6-foot-1, 160 pound left-handed hitter with quick hands and bat speed with pop to his pull-side. Comia registered a high exit velocity of 89 mph and ran a 7.07 in the 60-yard dash.

+ 2022 OF Keaton Mahan (Delta HS) is a 6-foot-1, 165 pound left-handed hitter with plus bat speed for his age. He showcased potential power to his pull-side and the ability to drive the gaps during his BP round from a level path. Mahan registered a high exit velocity of 91 mph.

+ Darien Pugh (2021, Covenant Christian HS) is a 5-foot-10, 185 pound left-handed hitting SS. Pugh had one of the top rounds from the left side displaying quick bat speed with a good approach and barrel control. He showcased consistent hard contact with gap-to-gap power and fluid rhythm throughout the swing.

+ Carter Mathison (2021, Homestead HS) stands in at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds. The left-handed hitter found the barrel consistently during his BP session producing hard hit line drives with above average bat speed. Mathison recorded a high exit velocity of 89 mph.

+ Drew Murray (2022, Boone Grove HS) possesses a big 6-foot-2, 220 pound frame. The left-handed hitter showcased raw power to his pull-side from an uphill path. Murray registered a high exit velocity of 91 mph.

RIGHT HANDED

+ 2021 outfielder Auston Brewer (Snider HS) had strong offensive performance. Brewer is a strong athletic 5-foot-10, 183 pounds, with an athletic lower half and a short, uphill swing path with athletic twitch that produces present pull-side power. Brewer registered a high exit velocity of 91 mph and also ran an event best 6.84 in the 60-yard dash.

+ 2022 SS Tyler Cerny (Center Grove HS) showcased advanced feel from the right-side with twitchy hands and quick bat speed. Cerny, a 6-feet, 155 pounder, showed the ability to regularly get to extension, driving the ball with hard contact to his pull-side. He shows crisp actions defensively, with arm strength (85 mph).

+ 2021 C/3B David Novak (Zionsville HS) showed quick bat speed with a lot of feel and barrel control from the right side of the box. His swing path is uphill, producing hard line-drive contact to his pull-side with twitch and rhythm throughout the swing. Novak recorded a high exit velocity of 95 mph.

+ 2021 Hunter Dobbins (Mt. Vernon HS) is a 6-foot-1, 205 pound C/3B that hits from the right-side. At the plate he uses a short path that regularly gets to extension producing loud contact with power potential. Dobbins recorded a high exit velocity of 93 mph. Dobbins possesses arm strength behind the plate at 78 mph with sub 2.0 pop times and was also 85 mph across the infield when working out at 3B.

+ 2023 RHP/OF Denham Kozy (Munster HS) is a young right-handed hitter with a lot of potential. He showcased a fast bat with loose hands and a short path that gets to extension with projectable gap-to-gap power. He shows fluid rhythm in the swing with an athletic lower half. Kozy registered a high exit velocity of 86 mph.

+ 2023 3B Carter Murphy (West Vigo HS) is a strong 6-feet, 197 pounder with quick bat speed for his age and gap-to-gap power potential. The swing path is long, but shows the ability to get to extension. He registered a high exit velocity of 88 mph.

+ Dylan Rost (2021, Elkhart Memorial HS) is a 5-foot-9, 165 pound right-handed hitting middle-infielder with a line drive approach at the plate. He has quick bat speed from a short path that gets to extension with fluid rhythm. Rost recorded a high exit velocity of 90 mph.
