Cape Cod: With a similar setup and swing to former Major Leaguer Jim Edmonds, the left handed hitting Mathison stays behind the ball well and uses all fields with authority. He’s a speed/power combo talent that has hit 26 doubles and 29 home runs during his first two seasons with the Hoosiers. He did not show that same power production for Cotuit with just three XBH (all doubles) in 121 plate appearances, but he walked (23) more than he struckout (21) while posting a .260 average. Seeing time mostly on the outfield corners for Indiana, the strong-armed Mathison had a chance to display his talents in center field for the Kettleers. He’s an early Day Two draft follow for next summer.
9/13/20
Mathison, an Indiana recruit, possesses present physicality with a muscular 6-foot-1, 190-pound frame that might still add even more strength in the future. The left-handed hitter has a heavy barrel, and utilizes a leg lift to scoop the hands back into a power position before working them flat through the zone. The ball jumps off the barrel which features considerable lag in the zone, and while there were some instances of the hands pushing away from the body that caused him to get around balls, the power potential is clearly evident.
7/07/20
Strong bodied, power runner with some effort to his stride; 6.78 sixty. Later sprinted to a 4.12 down the line. Easily fielded everything hit at him in the outfield, but was more cautious than aggressive pursuing the baseball. Instead, he let the ball come to him. Showed average arm strength with loose arm and lower effort from a high three-quarter release point. At the plate the left-handed hitter showed a complicated and busy hand load. Likely a great timing mechanism on his good days and a hitch on others. Good balance, firms up front side and gets on-plane well. Next-level bat speed (74.5 mph average, 80 mph max) with the potential for future plus raw power. Took a loud BP, where his max exit velocity was 98 mph and furthest batted ball was 363’.
2/23/19
Carter Mathison, OF/LHP, Homestead HS, 2021, 6 foot 1, 180 pounds, showed extremely well with the bat at this event. Swings it from the left side, syncs up very nicely and gets on plane with leverage. Uses both gaps with power, and has high upside in the box. Also ran a 7.04 60 yard dash.
