Preseason All-State Games: Outfield Analysis

Today, we take a break from our high school season coverage to bring you some analysis on some of our past events. Here's a look at the backstops from the Preseason All-State Games that took place on January 26th at Arizona State University. One of the stronger positional groups of the event, there was talent across the board from uncommitted seniors to rising underclassmen. Here are reports from the afternoon, listed in alphabetical order.

Enzo Apodaca OF / LHP / Chaparral, AZ / 2020Rankings StateRank: 89 / POS: 15
5-foot-9 170-pound build, uncommitted at time of the event, recently committed to Gonzaga. Although his size might have scared some D1 programs away, he packs a bigger punch than what it looks like. Apodaca has a medium compact frame with above average strength & athleticism. There is some fast twitch in his actions. Left-handed hitter whose bat really stood-out at the event. Hit the hardest ball of the day on a triple to CF. Displayed a short compact swing with body control. Consistent hard contact with pull approach at 94mph. Used a small leg lift to shift weight, riding back leg shortly into foot strike. Short load in his hands with a level path to the baseball. Solid runner in the OF, Ran a 6.97 60-yard dash. Easy actions and some quickness in the OF combined with a solid arm at 85mph. |
Tyler Bare OF / RHP / Casteel, AZ / 20216-foot-1 160-pounds, high waisted with long limbs, thin body with room to hold more strength, some present athleticism. Hit from a wider base with some knee bend with hands over the plate. Used an early gather step to create leverage and timing. Foot landed back where it started. Multiple parts to his hand load. Long swing at times, barrel worked uphill from below the baseball. Middle approach, showing some pop to LF. Athletic fielder with slow methodical actions. Used a side step to throw to home plate with 80mph arm strength. |
Bradey Bejarano OF / 1B / Shadow Ridge, AZ / 20206-foot-1 170-pounds, uncommitted senior, balanced strength with long legs. Showed some quickness running a 6.89 60-yard dash. Hit from a slightly wide base, using a heel lift to transfer some energy. Gains a little ground on his stride. Starts with hands above shoulder, loading barrel vertically. Looks to elevate the baseball. Contact looks harder than 76mph exit velocity shows. Athleticism & speed plays in the OF. Short choppy steps as he approaches the baseball, stepping behind to throw with long arm action at 81mph. |
Jonah Burks OF / RHP / Home School, AZ / 2020Rankings StateRank: 123 / POS: 26
5-foot-11 180-pounds, good strength in physical body, raw athleticism & actions. Recorded the highest exit velocity & OF throwing velocity of the event. Hit from a tall upright position with narrow & open base. Drifts into hard front foot strike. Strength through downward swing path with GB contact, finishing low. 97mph exit velocity. Showed some speed, running a 7.07 60-yard dash. Steps behind with direction to create some momentum on throws. 86mph arm strength. Development should be followed as he has above average strength. |
Brandon Compton OF / LHP / Buckeye Union , AZ / 20225-foot-9 165-pounds, two-way player, balanced frame with projectability. Strength & maturity starting to come. Overall clean actions & high baseball IQ. Left-handed hitter with advanced approach. Starts from an athletic base with some weight on left leg, knees inside toes. Uses a small pick-up with minimal forward movement to generate leverage. Loads hands slightly back with some stoppage. Short level swing with middle approach. Hard contact at 87mph exit velocity. Showed ability to use LCF gap well. Capable corner OF, ran a 7.64 60-yard dash. More athletic than time shows. Used a side shuffle on throws to home with 82mph arm strength. Repeatable delivery on the mound, throwing strikes at 78-81mph combined with above average control on his average 12/6 CV. Going to be a player to monitor as he physically develops. Well rounded player. |
Anthony Diaz 3B / OF / Brophy College Prep, AZ / 20225-foot-10 180-pounds, athletic build with some present strength. Left-handed hitter with pull approach. Looks to elevate baseball, working uphill creating top spin. Starts from a narrow slightly open base. Uses leg lift with some forward movement to generate pop. Hard contact at 87mph exit velocity. Worked out in the OF & 3B. Quicker than 7.75 60-yard dash shows. Uses step behind in OF with average carry on throws at 82mph. Rounds baseball, fielding ball with two hands and chest down. 77mph arm strength at 3B. |
Matthew Diaz OF / 3B / Brophy College Prep, AZ / 20225-foot-10 180-pounds build, balance frame with some strength in legs. Hits from an upright position with an average base. Used a leg lift trigger, landing hard at times. Starts hands above shoulder, loading them slightly down. Level swing with mid/pull approach. Slightly above average contact at 83mph. Ran a 7.49 60-yard dash. Plays through the ball in the OF with step behind. Accurate arm with some carry from both positions, especially OF. Natural arm strength at 84mph from OF. |
Austin Haugen OF / C / Desert Mountain, AZ / 20215-foot-10 185-pounds, some present strength, average athleticism & coordination. Hits from a straight up stance with knees bent. Starts with weight slightly inside his back knee. Loads body, trying to ride back leg. Gets stuck on the backside at times with tight hips. Rest bat on his shoulder creating flat barrel entry. Short out of the hitting zone, middle approach with some LD contact at 84mph. Some pop to LCF. Ran a 7.72 60-yard dash. Creates angles late as he approaches baseball. 82mph arm strength, throwing over-top. |
Quincy Jacobs OF / OF / Horizon Honors, AZ / 20205-foot-11 205-pounds, above average strength especially in the lower half, glimpses of quickness in overall raw movements. Starts from a narrow upright base with an open stance. Lands open but more athletic at heel plant. Inconsistent lower half usage, using brute upper body strength. Hard contact at times at 86mph from downward swing path. Raw actions that showed some quickness in the OF, ran a 7.27 60-yard dash. Steps in front on throws with little direction on upper body dominant throws. 77mph arm strength. |
Patrick Kappler RHP / OF / Cactus Shadows, AZ / 20226-foot 195-pounds, two-way player, XL frame with some strength & durability, slow-twitch. Ran an 8.14 60-yard dash with short strides. Hit from a wide base using a rushed toe tap trigger, landing close to where he started. Starts hand in center of body, head height, loading to back shoulder. Vertical barrel entry. Cuts underneath baseball. Short to the baseball with average bat speed. 78mph exit velocity. Creates angles & some direction with accurate throws. 76mph arm strength. On the mound, worked 71-73, topping out at 74mph with FB from a ¾ arm slot. Mixed in a 62-63 mph CV with little shape. |
Jake Kingsbury OF / LHP / Brophy College Prep, AZ / 2021Rankings StateRank: 62 / POS: 9
6-foot-1 195-pounds, physical body, broad shoulders, big legs, strength to work with. Hits from a squared base with some weight on the front leg, shifting weight to the middle of the body. Uses a small leg lift with minimal forward movement. Throws hands at the ball with strong upper body dominant swing. Ball jumps of bat with limited carry at 89mph. Good pre-pitch movement & feel for position in OF. Takes good angles & creates carry with accuracy on 81mph throws. One the mound, throws with short arm action from ¾ slot. FB sat 78-81 with higher spin. Takes direction away from plate with uncontrolled finish. Off-speed still developing but located down in the zone. |
Hayden Lewis RHP / OF / Chaparral High School, AZ / 20226-foot 150-pound, two-way player. Thin body with some twitchy movements, strong forearms. Ton of room to fill out physically. Hips worked well. Starts from a medium base in an upright position with a slightly open stance. Uses a leg lift to gather energy in the back leg. Minimal forward movement. On time with some rhythm. Pull approach with some hard contact at 86mph. Tracks the ball in the OF. Showed aggressiveness, playing through the baseball. Uses step behind crow-hop with carry on throws at 86mph. Had a decent day positionally but really stood out with his noticeably fast arm on the mound. Throws from a ¾ slot with a quick delivery. Sat 84-86mph on firm FB with fade. Mixed in a hard tight slider 73-77mph. CH was thrown at 71-72mph. Hitters couldn’t catch up with how fast he worked. |
Reuben Montano OF / 3B / Desert Ridge , AZ / 2022Medium 5-foot-8 157-pounds, long arms, limited strength with raw actions. Hits from an upright base with feet shoulder width apart. Slightly open stance. Pre-loads, landing on his toe before using forward move into the heel plant. Flat path to the baseball. Middle approach with average contact at 81mph. Ran a 7.10 60-yard dash. Average reads on the ball in the OF. Limited carry on upper-body dominant throws at 81mph. |
Eddie Montoya OF / RHP / Valley Vista, AZ / 20225-foot-10 165-pound, athletic body with long lean limbs. Left-handed swing and advanced approach stood out. Hits from a narrow upright stance, leaning slightly on the inside of the back leg. Uses leg lift, riding back leg into front foot strike. Swing was steep at times. Showed the ability to use the opposite side of the field well. Repeatable swing with some rhythm, LD contact. Better hitter than his 78mph exit velocity shows. Hit some balls hard in the games. Above average actions in OF. Ran a 7.25 60-yard dash. Long strides to baseball. Had some loft on his throws at 80mph. Going to be a left-handed hitting OF prospect to follow. |
Hayden Moore C / RHP / Ironwood, AZ / 2021Rankings StateRank: 77 / POS: 12
5-foot-10 185-pounds, looks bigger than numbers would suggest, XL frame with some strength & durability, overall stiff actions. Starts from relaxed upright base with slight bent back knee. Leg kick trigger, back foot stays connected to ground at front foot strike. Opposite field approach, getting started late at times. Looks to hit the ball in the air with a slight upper-cut swing plane. Hard contact at 89mph. Heavy footwork in the OF, ran an 8.20 60-yard dash. 78mph arm strength. |
Logan Olson OF / 2B / Valley Vista, AZ / 2020Rankings StateRank: 82 / POS: 14
6-foot 162-pounds, uncommitted, lean body with athleticism. Room to hold more strength. Hits from a wide athletic base with knees bent. Used slight front leg pick up for timing. Minimal transfer of weight through swing. Vertical barrel entry. Quick out of the zone, finishing low. Middle approach with slightly downward swing plane. 80mph exit velocity. Moves well in the OF with feel for the position, running a 6.88 60-yard dash. Uses a step behind with direction to create carry. Accurate arm, throwing over-top with 83mph arm strength. |
Linden Reaburn RHP / OF / Casteel, AZ / 20235-foot-10 180-pounds, strong bodied, broad shoulders, big forearms & legs, power actions. Starts from relaxed upright base, lowering into back leg. Used small & quick leg lift, opening up front foot as it hits the ground. Some extra pre-pitch movement. Long raw swinger, slightly uphill swing path looking to drive baseball. Mid/pull approach, 83mph exit velocity. Choppy footwork in the OF. Ran a 7.57 60-yard dash. Created direction toward his target. Accurate throws at 86mph. Has a power approach to pitching. Back foot stays connected to the ground. Front leg stays bent through the finish. Throws from a higher arm slot with some uphill tilt through delivery. Pounded the zone with FB, sitting at 79-83mph. CH had fade at 70-71mph. BB was average on the day but located well. |
Quade Swearingen OF / 2B / Corona Del Sol, AZ / 2021Rankings StateRank: 19 / POS: 1
5-foot-10 190-pounds, strong physical athlete, broad shoulders, multi sport (QB1), some raw actions. Starts from an athletic squared base. Uses leg kick, landing in a good launch position where he started. Natural pop & strength through swing. Pull approach with consistent hard contact at 88ph. Capable corner outfielder that showed some speed. Ran a 7.02 60-yard dash. Average footwork, slowing feet down as he approaches the baseball- better in game. Short arm action with more in tank on 84mph throws. Should be a strong follow as he spends more time on the diamond. Has the strength & athleticism to make positive adjustments. Knows how to compete. |
Jimmy Williams OF / RHP / Cactus Shadows, AZ / 20226-foot-3 175-pound, two-way player. Looks more physical & body stands out. Sneaky athleticism, running a 7.14 60-yard dash. Hits from a semi wide base. Uses a small toe tap to gather some weight in the back leg. Aggressive approach with pull contact. Hit a ball deep to LCF in game, reaching out for solid contact, 92mph exit velocity. Takes his time fielding and getting rid of the ball in the OF. 82mph arm strength with minimal momentum. Also had a solid day on the mound, working 80-83mph with his FB. Stays tall through his delivery. Throws from a ¾ slot with some arm speed. Gets some extension. Off-speed still developing, CV shows some shape. Should improve across the board as he learns to use and control his body. Solid follow into spring & summer. |
