Arizona Fall Review: Pitching Analysis

As we continue rolling out Arizona Fall Review content, here's a look at the pitchers from the December event. One of the most important positions on the field, there was talent across the board. Here are reports from the afternoon, listed in alphabetical order.
Tyler Bare OF / RHP / Casteel, AZ / 2021Large 6’1” 160lbs build, lean body, high waisted with long limbs. Still some maturing to be done and plenty of room to gain strength. Some present athleticism- ran one of the top 60 yard dash times at 6.99. Hits from a medium athletic base with a controlled toe tap trigger. Had one of the best BP rounds of the day. Flat path to the ball with good stretch & extension. Consistent line drive contact at 85mph. Athletic fielder with confident actions. Steps behind with direction creating momentum on throws with 82mph arm strength. Also pitched in the event sitting 80-82mph with FB. Arms works from H3/4 slot with a repeatable delivery. CV has some good shape at times and will be better thrown with more intent. Throws strikes with 3 pitches. Should eat some innings come spring. Solid two-way prospect to follow. |
James Benbrook SS / RHP / Ironwood, AZ / 2021Large 5’10” 158lbs build, average frame & athleticism. Starts with feet shoulder width apart slightly closed off. Short linear path to the baseball finishing low with one hand early. Short stride towards pitcher. Average pull contact at 80mph. Uptempo fielder that keeps quick feet moving. Throws from different arm slots at 77mph. Pitches starting from tall standing upright position. Varying arm slot from windup to stretch. More movement on pitches from stretch. FB sat 73-77mph. Changing consistency on secondary pitches. |
Cade Bleeker RHP / 3B / Skyline, AZ / 2022Large 6’2” 160lbs build, thin, high waisted with average strength, some projectability in body. Repeatable delivery with some rhythm in actions. Good direction to the plate inline towards the catcher, landing square. Threw a heavy FB 73-75mph. CV was thrown for strikes at 60-61mph- gradual movement with little shape. CH was best secondary pitch with some cut to it with near FB arm speed at 66-68mph. |
Declan Conry RHP / 1B / Casteel, AZ / 2023XL 6’4” 175lbs build, size stands out, showed some coordination. Hits from medium athletic base. Shifts weight to bag leg with slow controlled leg lift. Vertical barrel entry, keeping his barrel below his hands to contact. Falls forward into front foot strike. Uses the whole field. Solid contact at 78mph. Comfortable fielder with loose hands. Slows feet down occasionally as he fields the ball. Great pitchers body to work with. Pitches predominantly from stretch in upright narrow position with tall balance point. Drops and drives to the plate with early forward trunk finish. FB sat 72-75mph with over-top arm action. Threw changeup for strikes to arm side at 64-68mph. Follow with improved strength & flexibility. |
Campbell Cozby SS / RHP / Thunderbird, AZ / 2022Large 6’ 160lbs build, some projectability & athleticism in frame. Showed an advanced pull approach at the plate. Starts from an easy balanced setup with hands shoulder height. Transfers weight into back heel with big controlled leg kick. Hands are loose and load slightly back. Gets inside the ball and shows good extension. Gap to gap hitter with consistent hard contact at 88mph. Fields ball with low effort. Above average glove. Arm will improve with more intensity playing through baseball. 74mph arm across diamond. Smooth repeatable delivery landing slightly closed. Short compact arm action with regular effort. FB sat 77-80mph with some arm side run. Above average slider with late action at 68-71mph. Threw CH down in the zone. Good two way to follow going into spring/summer. |
Riley Davis LHP / 1B / Casteel , AZ / 2020Uncommitted, Large 6’1” 180lbs build, above average strength in legs. Starts tall in back leg going into drop & drive approach from H3/4 arm slot. Lower half stays closed coming down the mound, landing square. Front shoulder slightly open with balanced trunk at front foot strike. 3 pitches for strikes. FB sat 78-80 with occasional run. Above average offspeed. CH thrown with fade at 66-68mph. SL at 64-66mph. |
Andres Gonzalez OF / RHP / Sahuarita, AZ / 2021Large 5’10” 165lbs build, some present strength & athleticism to frame. Hits from Medium squared base into a big leg kick gathering weight in back leg. Loads upper body with leg kick, hands go to ball as front foot comes down. Efficient bat path. Middle Pull approach with solid contact at 80mph. Timid actions in OF with more in tank on throws at 77mph. Confident pitcher on the mound. Athletic delivery with drop & drive approach. Stays closed coming down the mound. Firm FB worked 80-82mph. Varying shape on CV at 65-70mph. |
Ethan Hatch 1B / RHP / Poston Butte, AZ / 2022XL 6’1” 185lbs build, big legs with some present strength. Starts from strong balanced upright base with hands starting behind back foot. Loads hands deep with vertical barrel. Long flat swing plane, getting out of the zone quickly. Pull approach with average contact at 81mph. Comfortable fielder with quicker movements than you would think for 8.63 runner. Big body to work with on the mound. Threw a flat FB at 74-76, topping at 77mph with higher arm angle. Threw gradual 11/5 CV at 57-61mph with stiff wrist. In line direction, landing square. Some forced glove/hand separation in delivery. Regular effort. |
Charles Heil RHP / 3B / Seton Catholic Prep, AZ / 2023XL 6’3” 190lbs build, Tall with long lean limbs. Body stands out for age. Starts with tall balance point at leg lift, using drop & drive approach to plate. Knee inside back hip driving down the mound early. Front shoulder open at footstrike with upright trunk. Pitches more comfortably from the stretch with loose H3/4 arm action. Firm FB at 77-79mph. Developing offspeed pitches. SL shows glimpses of being above average with late break at 72-74mph. Follow on the mound. |
Daniel Hutchison RHP / 3B / Chandler, AZ / 2022Large 6’1” 160lbs build, long legs, high waisted with some projectability. Starts from relaxed upright position getting tall in leg lift. Quick delivery coming down mound with aggressive front leg, landing square with early trunk rotation. Falls off towards 1B side occasionally. Short quick arm action from ¾ slot. FB was 72-76mph. Mixed in a CV and CH that was thrown down in zone with little sink. |
Caden Littell RHP / Hamilton, AZ / 2021Medium 5’9” 155lbs build, compact body with some definition in legs. Repeatable delivery with smooth rhythm. Long loose arm action extending arm back towards 2B. Good body control through athletic finish. Commanded 3 pitches. FB sat 78-80mph with occasional run. Above average offspeed. SL at 64-66mph was tight with early shape. CH at 71-73 had some fade. Follow as he gets bigger and stronger. |
Anthony Loth SS / RHP / Florence , AZ / 2021Large 6’ 155lbs build, thin body with average strength. Pitches predominantly from the stretch, starting in crouched close off position. Tall leg lift to balance point with drop and drive approach to plate. Lands slightly across body with athletic finish, hiding the baseball. Upper half stays closed until front foot strike. Straight FB sat 74-77mph, topping out at 80mph. Threw floating 12/6 CV 57-60mph. CH had downward action at 69-72mph. Hits from wide crouched base with lower hands. Small pick up, loading hands with vertical barrel. Minimal extension through baseball. LD approach with average contact at 74mph. Avg choppy footwork, fielding ball in middle of body between legs occasionally. Some carry across diamond at 76mph. |
Bryce McKnight SS / RHP / Desert Vista, AZ / 2023Large 6’ 145lbs build, lean body with some athleticism & projectability. Smooth clean delivery on the mound. Throws from ¾ arm slot. Lands in line, falling off to 1B occasionally. FB 77-79mph with some arm side run. CH was above average at 67-70mph with fade. Hits from medium slightly open base with hands shoulder level. Rocks into back leg with small front foot pick up. Wraps bat behind head. Varying path to the ball. Gets underneath baseball with average contact at 76mph. Average footwork and quickness. Accurate to bag at 76mph. |
Cayden Musgrove RHP / OF / Basha, AZ / 2021XL 6’2” 180lbs build, long limbs with some durability to build off. Two way player. Hits from a medium upright base with some weight starting in his backside. Uses coiled leg kick to generate leverage. Leans back through swing keeping some weight in backside. Displayed hard contact to left side at 83mph. Average athleticism and feet in OF. 68mph arm strength. Also pitched in the event, decent pitchers frame to work with. Upper body dominant thrower. Threw a straight FB that sat 74-75mph, topping at 77mph. Threw two breaking balls with varying shape. Spotty command. |
Landon Penney LHP / 1B / Brophy College Prep, AZ / 2023Large 6’ 185lbs build, strong physical body. Hits from athletic base, toes pointing slightly outward. Hands start shoulder height with stiff elbows, loading into arm bar at times. Holds bat deep in palms. Transfers energy into backside with leg kick. Drives forward off back side violently with average body control. Natural pop with aggressive pull approach at 83mph. Stiff fielder that slows feet to field baseball. Fields ball out front with sure hands. Avg follow through with 62 mph velocity. Pitches with hunched over posture. Very short arm action, pushing the ball to home plate. FB sat 71-73, topping at 74mph. 12/6 CV with early short armed action. Also threw a CH. Although some rawness, overall physicality makes for a follow over next few years. |
Michael Perez LHP / 1B / Notre Dame Prep, AZ / 2020Large 6’ 190lbs build, thick limbs. Leans over backside with some effort in delivery. Short & stiff with quicker arm action. Shoulders and hips in sync through delivery. Lands open with early trunk rotation, falling towards 3B side. Hides the ball well with above average movement on pitches. Average command. FB sat 72-75mph, topping at 78. CV showed glimpses of being 12/6 with above average shape. |
Ryan Peterson 1B / LHP / Valley Christian, AZ / 2020Large 6’2” 175lbs build, strength in lower half with average coordination. Relaxed open stance. Starts hands at center of body loading to back shoulder. Uses leg kick, turning leg in to generate leverage. Lands square with quick finish. Pull approach at 80mph exit velocity. Fields ball from low position with one hand. Gathers feet to throw. 70mph across diamond. Pitches from high arm slot with tall balance point. FB Sat 69-72 with some two seam action with gradual CV at 58-63mph. |
Linden Reaburn RHP / OF / Casteel, AZ / 2023Large 5’10” 180lbs build, proportionally strong. Continues to be an intriguing younger pitcher to keep an eye on. Pitches with over-top arm action & more intent driven approach. Sat 82-83mph with his high spin FB. 12/6 CV at 67-69mph shows glimpses of being above average. Mixed in three pitches that were thrown for strikes. Quieter day than normal from positional side. Hits from square upright stance with small leg lift. Some rawness to upper body dominant swing. Uses pure strength to generate contact. Fields ball with two hands in OF, arm plays when he gets momentum going to target. Ran a 7.35 60 yard dash. Overall, he has an above average arm for the age group that should continue to be followed. |
Isaac Rehfield LHP / OF / Casteel, AZ / 2021Medium 5’10” 155lbs build, lean athletic body with fast twitch movements. Starts from closed off position, landing slightly across body. Highly deceptive delivery & arm action. Quick delivery with fast arm. Throws from L3/4 slot with good forward tilt and extension to plate. Everything moves. Above average two seam & SL combination, thrown on similar planes. FB sat 77-79mph with 64-65 breaking ball. Has a lot in his arsenal. Solid follow as he continues to develop physically. |
Braeden Romero RHP / 3B / Hamilton , AZ / 20226’3” 178lbs build, lean body with extra long limbs. Good projectability. Starts in tall upright position going into leg lift with downhill delivery. Sinks into back leg, driving back knee inside hip. Early rotation of the lower half landing in line with home plate with athletic finish. Over-top arm action. FB sat 75-77mph, developing a feel for off-speed at this time. |
Braeden Schnabel 1B / OF / Corona Del Sol, AZ / 2022Large 6’1” 151lbs build, thin, high waisted with very long limbs. Hits from tall upright position, hands shoulder height. Hands go back as front foot lands. Flat path through the zone. Barreled up some balls in BP with a simple approach. 77mph exit velocity. Tall fielder with average effort. Shuffles on throws, 72mph across the diamond. Projectable body on the mound. Starts from tall position, drop and drive approach. FB was 71-74mph with slight arm side run. Above average off speed on 11/5 CV and sink on CH. Strike thrower with easy actions. Follow as he matures and gains more strength. |
Steven Stewart C / RHP / Ironwood, AZ / 2021Rankings StateRank: 39 / POS: 6
Large build at 6’ 150lbs, long lean frame with room to get stronger, versatile athlete- showed that he could do it all with some success. Switch hitting catcher that showed ability to barrel up baseball from both sides with 84mph exit velocity, clean repeatable swing from left side with small knee turn leg lift, from right side uses a small toe tap trigger & transfers more body weight, can also get on the mound to pitch a bit. Worked his FB 80-82 consistently, topping out at 84mph with shorter arm action, showed two breaking balls with slider showing well, Solid overall arm strength with 1.96-2.14 pop times- standing up at times, projectable athlete that moves well behind plate. |
Augie Walters RHP / OF / Brophy College Prep, AZ / 2021Rankings StateRank: 21 / POS: 4
Large 6’4” 175lbs build, high waisted with good projectability. Athleticism to build off- ran a 7.03 60 yard dash. Calm collective approach to pitching. Bouncing back from an injury, Walters showed long loose arm action with low effort at 81-84mph. Off-speed was average and should improve with more time this spring. Hits from a balanced athletic set up. Short stride with hands loading slightly up and back simultaneously creating some leverage. Displayed some hard contact at 88mph. Good OF instincts. Good direction and carry on throws. Speed & athleticism give him the ability to move efficiently to the baseball. Watch for Walters to make a jump into the spring/summer as he gets comfortable on the mound, has the athleticism to make positive adjustments. |
Ryan Zuniga RHP / OF / Rio Rico, AZ / 2021Medium 6’1” 150lbs build, ultra thin young body with long limbs, good projectability and room to add size. Some fast twitch movements present. Clean, easy delivery. Short, easy arm action from H3/4 slot. Quick arm speed. Hips work well with good direction, landing square. Controls body with some shoulder/ hip separation. FB was firm & quick at 77-80mph. Shortened & slowed down arm on 58-60mph with gradual 11/5 shape. Good follow as he matures and develops more physically. |
