Early Signing Period: University of Arkansas

By: Zac Bottoms
Arkansas Scouting Director

The early signing period began last Wednesday. Players from all corners of the state have been having their signing ceremonies and making their college choice official. Here is a look at the five players that committed to the University of Arkansas

2016 RHP Angus Denton, Beebe HS
Denton is a 6-foot, 165-pound RHP with a medium frame and an athletic build. He pitches from a side arm, arm slot. He repeats his delivery and has smooth rhythm consistently. He competes in the bottom of the strike zone with 82-84 mph up 86. His fast ball has slight run and sink. He compliments the fastball with a Frisbee slider with late break thrown at 71-74 mph. He is a good athlete that plays MIF when he is not pitching. Overall Denton is a polished right-hander with a feel for two pitches, he should be ready to get outs right away at the collegiate level.

2016 LHP Harrison Heffley, Rogers HS
Hefley is a 6-foot-2 175-pound left-hander with an athletic build and frame. He pitches from a H ¾ arm slot with a quick clean arm. He repeats his delivery on a consistent basis allowing him to throw strikes. He competes in the strike zone with a fastball of 84-87 mph with late run. He has a feel for the breaking ball and changeup. He has added deception with both due to throwing them at near fastball arm speed. Overall Heffley is a good athlete with a quick arm, as he adds strength he will throw harder and should be a solid collegiate arm.

2016 RHP Zach Jackson, Bryant HS
Jackson is a 6-foot-2 230-pound right hander with a large frame and a large build. He primarily pitches with a two pitch combination of his fastball and slider. The fastball is 85-88 mph with boring action. His slider is thrown at 74-77 mph with late sharp break, which dominated hitters this spring. Jackson works from a H3/4 arm slot, with a quick arm. He repeats his mechanics. Overall he is one of the top arms in the 2016 class and should continue to get better as the body and athleticism improve.

2016 LHP Evan Lee, Bryant HS
Lee is a 6-foot-1 180-pound LHP/OF with a large frame and an athletic build. On the mound he shows above average arm strength with pitch ability. He worked his fastball down in the zone at 88-91 mph. He complimented his fastball with a 72-74 curveball with 1/7 shape and late break and a changeup he threw with near fastball arm speed and arm side run. He repeats his mechanics allowing him to throw strikes on a consistent basis. His rhythm is rushed for me but it works for him. He is an above average athlete that runs a 6.7 in the 60. Overall Lee is a good athlete with a clean quick arm that understands how to pitch.

2016 LHP Dylan Thompson, Catholic HS
Thompson is a 6-foot-3 175-pound LHP with a large frame and a thin build. Mechanically he is sound with repeatable mechanics and rhythm. He works from an H ¾ arm slot with a loose quick arm. He command the strike zone with his fastball 85-87 mph. His secondary pitches both were thrown with near fastball arm speed. The curveball has 1/7 action with gradual break thrown a 68-70 mph. The change up was thrown 68-70 mph as well but has arm side run and depth. Overall Thompson projects to throw harder as he matures and adds weight. Other than physical strength he is a collegiate ready pitcher.
