2019 Preseason All-State Showcase Analysis: Middle Infielders

The 2019 Preseason All-State Showcase took place February 24th at Pro Performance RX in Morgantown, WV. Today we continue a series of articles analyzing the prospects in attendance with a look at the  Middle Infielders that participated.

Middle Infielders

Casey Smith, University, Class of 2021

Casey SmithOffensively, the 6-foot-2, 165-pound primary Pitcher initiates his swing from a spread, open position. He displayed an advanced skill set with the ability to drive the baseball. Core strength is evident within his frame. His hands are loose and are in rhythm with his body mostly. A 77 mph exit velocity off the tee was recorded. A 7.32-laser timed 60 was also recorded.

Defensively, Smith consistently moves his feet. He plays within his body and doesn't stray much. Shows overall confidence in his ability. He displayed a whippy arm action on his throws to first. A 80 mph positional velocity was recorded.

Ryan Goff, Bridgeport, Class of 2021

Ryan GoffOffensively, the 5-foot-10, 160-pound primary Shortstop initiates his swing from an open, athletic stance. He displays a slight leg kick as a timing mechanism, but is minimal. His hands work well with an inside-out approach. A 86 mph exit velocity was recorded. A 6.84-laser timed 60 was also recorded on this day.

Defensively, Goff moves extremely well and has total confidence in his hands. He continues to gain ground and continues to move his feet towards his target. A 79 mph positional velocity was recorded, up from 76 mph at his last event. 

Gavin Pratt, Carmicheal, Class of 2021

Gavin PrattOffensively, the 6-foot, 155-pound primary Pitcher starts in a spread to spread open stance. Pratt displayed a long, slide leg kick he used to help stay in rhythm. Does have to  tendency to be out on his front foot on contact, but does use his athleticism in the box. A 79 mph exit velocity was recorded. A 6.70-laser timed 60 was also recorded.

Defensively, Pratt displayed one of the stronger arms across the diamond at 80 mph. Makes some throws off balance, but was overall accurate. Overall, a very solid athlete and a player to watch in Pennsylvania.  

Gage Bibey, Philip Barbour, Class of 2021

Gage BibeyOffensively, the 6-foot, 170-pound primary Shortstop initiates his swing from an upright, athletic position. His hands move freely to go along with a athletic, smooth leg kick. Bibey can still benefit from exploding his hips more through his swing. A 83 mph exit velocity was recorded, up from 81 mph at his most recent event.

Defensively, Bibey attacks the ball and creates good angles. Demonstrates smooth, quick transfer and accurate 78 mph across the diamond velocity. He could benefit more from staying on his feet more when fielding the ball. Bibey's overall athleticism and 6.99-laser timed 60 are reflective of his athletic ability.

Will Hunt, Lewis County, Class of 2021

Will HuntOffensively, the 6-foot, 160-pound primary Shortstop starts in a open, neutral setup with his hands higher. His hands work well within his body. He displayed some pull side pop from the right side of the box. A 79 mph exit velocity was recorded. A 7.38-laser timed 60 was also recorded.

Defensively,  Hunt displayed confident, strong hands and the ability to make accurate throws from the deep in the hole at short. He could benefit from creating better angles on his throws. A 78 mph positional velocity was recorded.  

Jacob Spearen, University, Class of 2020

Jacob SpearenOffensively, the 5-foot-9, 160-pound primary Second Basemen starts in a spread, open stance. He displayed a line drive swing with the ability to drive the ball to either side of the field. His hands move freely, and are in sync with his body. Creates good torque and seperation through his midsection. A 77 mph exit velocity was recorded. On this day, a 7.68-laser timed 60 was recorded.

Defensively, Spearen showed ok footwork and release point. A 76 mph velocity across the diamond was recorded. He displayed good footwork and a strong glove . Also made strong, accurate throws.

Seth Wolfe, Greater Beckley Christian, Class of 2020

Seth WolfeOffensively, the 6-foot-3, 170-pound primary Second Basemen initiates his swing from an open, spread stance. He displays a leg kick as a timing mechanism to stay on time through the zone. His hands do drop while the pitch is being delivered, but he finds a way to make solid contact.. A 72 mph exit velocity was recorded.

Defensively, Wolfe displays confident hands and feet. He does have a little bit of a short arm on this throws, but is accurate. A 74 mph positional velocity was recorded.

Quincy Thornton, Morgantown, Class of 2021

Quincy ThorntonOffensively, the 5-foot-9, 150-pound primary Seconod Basemen initiates his swing out of a straight up, closed stance with his hands set neutral. He generates good torque and pop through the use of his lower body and torso. A 75 mph bat exit velocity of registered. A 7.77-laser timed 60 was recorded.

Defensively, Thornton moves his feet and has a ton of confidence in his hands. He gains ground well and continues to move his feet towards his target. A 70 mph positional velocity was recorded.

Bryce McClung, New Life Christian, Class of 2020

Bryce McClungOffensively, the 6-foot, 140-pound primary Shortstop starts in a straight up, controlled stance with his hands neutral. He displayed a quick, compact stroke. He showed the ability to drive the ball mostly to his pull side. A 78 mph exit velocity was recorded. A 7.71-laser timed 60 was recorded on this day.

Defensively, McClung displayed adequate hands. He plays under control from his feet up through the ball. A 66 mph positional velocity was recorded.
