Richmond Braves Scout Day: Standout 2021-2024 Arms

On Sunday November 15th during the Richmond Braves Scout Day there were plenty of players that stood out. Here are eight more arms, seven of which are uncommitted, that stood out during their bullpen sessions. 

John Barrett RHP / 3B / Jefferson Forest, VA / 2023

Solid 5-11, 185-pound frame. Barrett displayed control of his mechanics with the ability to repeat. Shorter arm circle working from a high three-quarter slot. Filled up the zone with a three pitch mix. The fastball worked in the middle third, but stayed down in the zone at 78-79 mph and touching 80. Breaking ball has bigger 12/6 shape and landed it for strikes at a 67% rate. Changeup took off to the arm side a bit, but displayed solid arm speed and has a chance to be a solid third pitch if he can stay behind it a little longer. 

Yoon Chae SS / RHP / Cape Henry Collegiate, VA / 2023

First look at the 5-foot-9 infielder/right handed pitcher did not disappoint. If you watch Chae the first thing you will notice is how well rounded of a player he is. Good hands and feet in the infield, feel for the barrel at the plate, and he did not disappoint on the mound as well. Four pitches that landed on average for strikes 70% of the time. The breaking pitches worked down in the zone with late action and landed them for strikes at a 60% clip. Arm speed and intent on a changeup that sat 73-76 and could work to both sides of the plate. The fastball sat 80-82 mph and worked primarily in the bottom of the zone with ability to pitch to both sides. Chae showed body control on the mound, feel for the zone, and had an all around solid performance on the day. 

 

Will Coleman 3B / RHP / Albemarle , VA / 2023

Athletic 6-foot frame with projection left. Controlled pace delivery with solid balance and feel for mechanics. Full arm circle that has a slight pause on the backside before building up quick arm speed through a three-quarter release. One of the most impressive things about Coleman's performance that day was his ability to fill the strike zone with his two pitch mix. The fastball worked to both sides and ends of the zone at 80-81 and touching 82. 80% of the fastballs were for strikes and 60% of the breaking balls were for strikes. The curveball sat 69-72 and worked to the glove side and down. 

 

Joe Gomez SS / RHP / Fluvanna County , VA / 2023

5-foot-10 athletic frame. Gomez is a young arm that has a lot of upside and the metrics back that up. The delivery is slow and controlled, arm swing is long and loose, and throws from a three-quarter slot. The fastball sat between 80-82, touching 83 with more there. Gomez has elite induced vertical break, averaging 23.1 inches and displaying extreme ride through the zone. On the fastball Gomez also displayed significant run with an average of 13.5 inches horizontal break. The curveball did not disappoint in the metrics department either. Above MLB average spin rate that was up to 2743 on a curveball that sat between 68-70 mph. Love the upside to this arm and has the potential to be a really nice arm down the road. 

 

Jacob Henry 1B / RHP / Grassfield, VA / 2023

Love the frame and makeup for the 6-foot-4 right hander. Henry has an upright delivery and could use his height and leverage to his advantage. Arm swing is short and tends to push it at times, but this is definitely a high ceiling arm. Fastball sat 77-80 and topped at 81. Curveball sat 64-65 mph and worked down in the zone. 

 

 

Timothy Marshall RHP / 3B / Home School, VA / 2021

Long limbed 6-3 frame. Works with pace and repeats delivery well. Marshall was arguably the most impressive arm on the day. The Liberty commit showed an electric three pitch mix on the night. The fastball sat 85-87 and showed true command to both sides of the plate. The slider had more side to side frisbee action and was late with above average spin. The curveball had hard 12/6 action and coupled with the slider, gives Marshall two solid out pitches to work off the fastball. 

 

 

Jackson Runyon RHP / OF / Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, VA / 2024

Runyon has an athletic 5-11 frame with a lot of projection left to it. The delivery has late intent and effort to it. The arm swing is full and loose and builds up speed quickly through a high three-quarter release. The one thing that has stood out about Runyon on multiple occasions is the breaking ball. The breaking ball showed varying shapes on this day, but when he stays on top of the bigger 12/6 curveball it shows swing and miss potential. Working off of the curveball the fastball has shown some flashes of being able to play up in the zone.  

 

 

Garrison Wight 3B / RHP / Cape Henry , VA / 2024

5-foot-11 athletic frame. Wight works with rhythm and pace on the mound. Arm circle is short on the the backside and is tough to pickup until late. Small correction on velo as Wight sat 79-81 with arm side run on the fastball. The fastball mainly worked on the inner half of the plate, while the breaking ball had gradual 11/5 break working to the glove side. Showed a changeup as his third pitch that worked down in the zone with solid arm speed and intent on it.
