The Preseason All State Session I was held on February 10, 2019 at the Virginia Sports complex. over 75 players from around the commonwealth attended in our first session of what ended up being well over 160 total participants of our top event of the winter. We begin our player analysis from the event with the catching position.

Tyler Cotten C Grafton 2020
Strong physical frame at 5-foot-11, 205-pounds. Hits from the right side from an athletic slightly open stance. Strides on line with a small pick up to put down. Hands load back with a slight bat wrap. Hands are quick and strong through the zone and bat has a uphill tilt showing some gap to gap power with an exit velo of 90 mph. Lower half finishes with some aggression to a high finish. Feet are quick behind the plate with a small jab step getting in line to a quick exchange. Arm action is quick with arm speed throwing from a high three-quarter arm slot at 79 mph. Throws showed carry with pop times ranging from 1.99-2.09. Had a quick Home-1st time for a catcher at 4.26 which displayed Cotten’s high level of athleticism.
Tyler Duckstein C/1B Millbrook 2020
Strong physical frame at 6-foot-1, 225-pounds. Square athletic stance with a small pick up and put down landing slightly closed. Hands load back and bat has a slight lay back before firing forward allowing bat to get on plane early with an uphill path. Showed ability to hit for power with some gap to gap potential. Lower half finishes completely and posted an exit velo of 86 mph. Feet were active behind the plate and got in line gaining ground on the throw. Exchange was a bit loose and away from the body, but arm action was short and quick throwing from an over the top arm slot. Velocity from behind the plate was 79 mph and pop times ranged from 2.06-2.18. Home-1st time was 4.50.
Cole Garrett C Thomas Dale 2020 (VMI)
Solid strong frame at 5-foot-11, 190-pounds. Has some juice hitting from the right side with a square athletic stance and a pronounced leg kick. Lands on line and hands back before firing the lower half with some explosion. Has some hand strength and whip getting the barrel through the zone with uphill tilt and stayed on the ball through extension. Exit velocity was 88 mph. Behind the plate Garrett showed quick feet getting in line for the throw. Quick clean exchange with a short arm action getting it out of the hand quick throwing from a high three-quarter arm slot. Velocity was 74 mph with pop times that ranged between 2.04-2.10. H-1st time was 4.57.

Kade Abrisz C/OF Menchville 2021
Athletic makeup standing 5-foot-9, 160-pounds and still has some room to grow into the body. Hits from a athletic slightly open stance with a small pick up to stride. Hands make a quick load back before firing through the zone and barrel stays in the zone through contact. Lower half finishes with some explosion and maintains balance throughout. Exit velocity was 81 mph and should get better as he adds strength to the frame. In the outfield feet were active on approach with solid glove presentation and threw with a positional velocity of 85 mph. Behind the plate shows a quick clean exchange. Quick feet get him in a solid position to throw. Throws with a short quick arm from a high three-quarter slot at 76 mph. Throws showed carry and some accuracy with pop times that ranged from 2.01-2.13. Ran a 4.66 Home-1st.
JT Carter C Fredericksburg Christian 2021
6-foot, 195-pound strong athletic frame. Ran a 4.31 Home-1st showing some athleticism for a power hitting catcher. Athletic square stance with a small toe tap to stride landing on line. Hands load back to an arm bar. Hands are quick getting started and bat path is short to the ball with some uphill tilt to the swing and a high finish. Has a strong lower half and finishes the hips completely on a swing that has some gap to gap power potential. Exit velo was 93 mph. Feet were short and quick behind the plate to a quick clean exchange. Throws were in line from a short quick arm action and an over the top slot. Throw velocity was 77 mph and pop times ranged from 2.00-2.07.
Cameron Murray C Mountain View 2021
Upright and slightly open stance that strides in landing closed. Hands make a direct load back before firing forward with a flat path and a high finish. Swing translates to line drive tendencies finishing the lower half completely. Exit velo was 83 mph. Home-1st time was 4.39. Behind the plate Murray showed a quick clean exchange with a short three-quarter arm action. Throws were in line at 71 mph and pops ranged from 2.15-2.22. Receiving was strong as he displayed strong hands working from the bottom of the zone and working up through pitches that were borderline.
Nicholas Sober C Prince George 2021
Athletic thin frame at 5-foot-8, 145-pounds. Open stance starting slightly crouched. Strides forward and lands on line. Rolls front shoulder close at load with minimal hand movement. Bat path is flat with line drive tendencies and is quick out of the zone. Exit velocity was 76 mph. Gained ground with the right foot on a jab step getting in line for the throw. Clean exchange to a short arm action and throws from a high three-quarter arm slot at 73 mph. Pop times ranged from 2.24-2.29. Home-1st time was 4.40.
Thomas Watermolen C Hickory 2021
Strong physical frame at 5-foot-10, 185-pounds. Athletic setup hitting from the right side with a rhythmic knee to knee load landing slightly closed. Hands load back with an arm bar and bat wraps at separation. Showed hand speed and strength getting through the zone quickly with uphill tilt at finish. Lower half gets through with some violence and showed potential power. Exit velocity was 81 mph. Home-1st time was 4.50. Feet get in line for the throw with a clean exchange. Arm action is short and whippy throwing from a high three-quarter arm slot at 73 mph. Pop times ranged from 2.09-2.17.
Austin Younce C Greenbrier Christian 2021
Square athletic stance with a wider base. Quick pick up and put down striding on line, hands move back and elbow slots, bat gets on plane early, and finishes with uphill tilt. Exit velocity was 88 mph showing strength and bat speed with power potential. Lower half finishes completely with aggression and maintains balance in the swing. Gains ground on the ball with the feet. Balanced and ready to throw after a quick exchange, short arm action with arm speed throwing from a high three-quarter arm slot. Throws showed carry, velocity was 76 mph, and pop times ranged from 2.01-2.07.
