Team Mid-Atlantic JFG Day 3 Notes

This week, Prep Baseball Report is hosting the Junior Future Games alongside the Future Games, with both events taking place at LakePoint in Cartersville, Georgia. Like the Future Games, teams represent a region, with Team Mid-Atlantic being made up of players from Maryland, Delaware, DC, and Virginia.

Junior Future Games teams play in a four game pool play tournament, with the pool leaders advancing to a Championship round on Sunday. 2019 is the first year that Team Mid-Atlantic has teams in the Junior Future Games field, with a 14U team and a 13U team competing.

See a recap of today's action for each team plus some notes from Team Mid-Atlantic players who had strong days:


13U Team Mid-Atlantic

13U played their final pool play matchup on Saturday afternoon against an unbeaten Michigan team with a spot in the Championship Bracket on the line. A back and forth game saw Mid-Atlantic open a 2-0 lead in the first before Michigan tied it in the second. After an hour lightning delay, both teams scored single runs in the fourth before Michigan won on a walkoff in the bottom of the fifth after the time limit had been reached.

In the Championship quarterfinals, Team Mid-Atlantic took on top-seeded Team Illinois. David vs. Goliath...Buster Douglas vs. Mike Tyson...United States vs. Soviet Union (1980 Olympics)...Team Mid-Atlantic vs. Team Illinois...Down goes Frazier!!! Mid-Atlantic would knock off top seeded Team Illinois by a score of 9-6. The pitching staff was led by Jacob Lee, Carson Seely, Carter Blankenship, and Jack Wells to keep a hot Illinois offense at bey. The offense used a whole team effort to pound out eleven hits in five innings of play for a complete team win.  

 

-Buckingham County 2024 RHP/SS Justin Gunter threw the first two innings and threw well, striking out three batters and making some big pitches to work out of a jam in the second with minimal damage. He also was 1-3 at the plate, getting behind in the count and fighting a ball into right-center. In the night game Gunter had a RBI single to center field.

-Thomas Dale 2024 OF Matthew McGovern continued his outstanding weekend, going 2-2 in the game and reaching on a hit-by-pitch in three plate appearances. He stole two bases as well and his speed had a major impact on the game. In the semifinal game he was 2-3 with two singles and displayed his plus speed on both sides of the ball.

-Dinwiddie 2024 Jackson Wells had a big RBI triple to right center in the first and a hard line drive back through the middle later in the game. 

-Dinwiddie 2024 3B Lucas Smith was 1-2 with an RBI single, staying inside and lining the ball up the middle for a hit in his first at-bat. In the nightcap Smith was 2-3 with a 2-run inside the park home run and a missile line drive back through the middle. He also three RBI on the night.

-Fort Mill (SC) 2024 OF Carter Blankenship also had has quickness impact the game, forcing a rushed throw on a grounder to short that led to an error to reach base. He then got very good jumps to steal second and third easily, before scoring on a passed ball that he got a good read on. In the playoff matchup Blankenship threw two solid innings in relief and was 2-3 with two singles and a stolen base. 

-2024 RHP Kyle Duckwall also threw well in 2+ innings of work after the delay, showed the ability to pound the strike zone with his fastball as well as throw his curveball for strikes. His curveball had depth and also drew some swing and misses.

-2024 Jackson Marvel did a nice job handling the pitching staff from behind the dish. Marvel had a big RBI single in the fifth that extended the Mid-Atlantic lead.

 

14U Team Mid-Atlantic

Team Mid-Atlantic 14U defeated Tennessee 6-1 in game one of the day Saturday. The bats came out hot collecting 11 hits in the time shortened six inning contest. Three pitchers also combined to hold Tennessee to six hits while striking out five. 

In their final pool play game, 14U played Missouri late Saturday night. An entertaining back-and-forth game saw Mid-Atlantic's seventh inning comeback come up just short, leaving the tying run on third base and falling 10-9. Mid-Atlantic got offensive contributions up and down the lineup in pounding out 14 hits in the loss.

 

- Nansemond Suffolk Academy 2023 LHP/1B Riley DeCandido started on the bump going two and two-thirds striking out four. The lefty worked fast and pounded the zone throwing with short arm action from a three-quarter arm slot. Fastball ranged 72-74, breaking ball was 64-67, and change-up sat 66-69 mph. DeCanditio also added an RBI with a line drive base hit to the opposite field. 

- Patriot 2023 RHP Jakob Foster came in relief to record the final out in the third and pitched two more scoreless innings thereafter. Foster showed a long, loose arm and pitched with easy effort. Projectable frame with a fastball that ranged 77-80 and a breaking ball that sat 63-66. Had a strong second game at the plate, going 2-2 with a well-hit single up the middle and a 2-RBI triple deep down the rightfield line. 

- Nansemond Suffolk Academy 2023 SS/RHP Jase Howell closed out the game working a scoreless three-up, three-down frame in the sixth. Howell was tough on hitters mixing up deliveries and arm slots. The righty threw from a three-quarters slot and also dropped down side-arm without losing control. Fastball ranged 72-75 and touched 76 mph and his breaking ball was 67 mph. In the second game, Howell yanked a ball down the rightfield line for a well-hit 2 RBI double.

- Nansemond Suffolk Academy 2023 RHP/3B Christian James went 1-for-3 with a base hit up the middle, collecting two RBI's in the early game. 

- Colgan 2023 OF/RHP Brett Renfrow showed quick bat speed and barreled up a couple balls going 2-for-3. Renfrow laced three line drives including an RBI triple deep to the gap in left-center field. He also showcased his arm strength from the outfield gunning a runner down at the plate. During the second game he kept things going with a triple to left-center that short-hopped the fence. Also threw two scoreless innings, striking out five and allowing just one hit. His fastball was 83-85, touching 86. Curveball was 65-66 and change-up was 70-72.

- Abingdon 2023 SS/2B Ethan Gibson went 1-for-2 lacing a double to the right-center field gap. Added another hit in the second game when he yanked an RBI single down the leftfield line. Also pitched, with his fastball sitting 80-83 and touching 84 curveball ran 66-67. 

- Liberty Christian Academy 2023 3B/2B John Simmons led the offensive attack going 2-for-2 with two RBI's. The left handed-hitting Simmons showed a nice approach at the plate working middle to opposite field. Kept showing that approach in the second game, going 2-3 with more line drives, one up the middle and another to left.

- Walsingham Academy 2023 SS/3B Trey Christman hit the ball hard twice in his two at-bats collecting a single going 1-for-2 and stole a base. 

- St. Christopher's School/IMG Academy 2023 SS/RHP Charlie Knighton reached base safely twice on the afternoon walking in his first at-bat and doubling down the line in right field in his second. 

- John Carroll (MD) 2023 LHP/1B Griffin Shirk also reached base safely twice walking in his first bat and singling to the opposite field. Shirk made a couple really nice plays at first base as well showing a quick first step and reaction.

-Highland 2023 SS/RHP Ryan Gimbel had a good nightcap at the plate, ripping two balls in three at-bats, a sharp single to left and a bombed triple to right-center.
