Ontario Insider: Class of 2022 Player Rankings (September)

With the 2019 campaign coming to an end and Tournament 12 right around the corner, Prep Baseball Report Ontario is pleased to announce the release of the inaugural 2022 rankings.

As the summer went on, it was clear to see that this crop of young players is going to be one to watch going forward. There’s serious talent coming up the pipes in the province at every position.

The best part? For now, all these players remain uncommitted as the 2022 class will begin to play a major role and focus for us as we move into the fall and into the 2020 calendar year.

Stay locked in with us all year as the ever-growing list continues to expand. Without any more delay, we present to you the first ever, 2022 Ontario Rankings.

AT THE TOP

Nathaniel Ochoa SS / OF / Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School, ON / 2022 Rankings  StateRank: 1 / POS: 1 OverallRank: 114 / POS: 28 Report: If there was ever a slam dunk in such a young class, this would be it. One of the younger players on this year’s Future Games team, 2022 Nate Ochoa has all the makings of an exciting player. At 6-3, 170-pounds, the half-Cuban shortstop is long, lean, lank and everything else you could be looking for in a young shortstop. Defensively his actions are advanced, and while the bat lags behind a bit right now, he shouldn’t have any issues going forward as he continues to bloom into one of the country’s premier prospects. Look for Ochoa to continue to make strides and polishes his game while it is easy to dream on and see what could unfold moving forward.

Luis Pimentel Guerrero OF / SS / Corpus Christi, ON / 2022 Rankings  StateRank: 2 / POS: 1 Report: An extremely toolsy prospect, 2022 OF/SS Luis Pimentel-Guerrero was the only other 2022 player on Canada’s Future Games team this summer. A switch-hitting outfielder who also plays the middle infield, the Dominican-born Pimentel has a way of playing up in big moments. His only downside is his height, but at 5-9, 150-pounds, he’s a sub-7 runner with some juice from both sides of the plate, and 90mph arm from the outfield. It’s loose at the plate while you can project from both sides, there is balance in the box and he seems to see pitches with a discipline and recognizes spin better or sooner than most. Exciting number two prospect to follow.

PAY ATTENTION TO THESE ARMS

Carson Lumley RHP / SS / Mother Teresa, ON / 2022 Rankings  StateRank: 3 / POS: 1 Report: The top pitcher in our 2022 class, right-handed pitcher Carson Lumley is an interesting arm to watch. Coming from pro bloodlines, the 6-3, 170-pound righty is a max effort pitcher up to 85, with feel for a secondary pitch. He’s still young, and has time to work on his pitchability, but as he grows he should be putting up good numbers in a hurry. It’s long and lean, with ability to add strength quickly, the arm is whippy from ¾ slot with a delivery that has some funk, and could make for a real uncomfortable at-bat for hitters. Lumley has a chance to be one of the better arms in this class when all is said and done.

Jack Pineau RHP / OF / Hammarskjold HS, ON / 2022 Rankings  StateRank: 5 / POS: 2 Report: Another interesting arm coming out of the 2022 class, the 5-11, 150-pound Pineau has been up to 81 this summer with definitely feel for his breaking ball. A native of Thunder Bay, Pineau is extremely clean already, has a quick arm, and works on a downhill plane. As he continues to grow, he’s one of the surest arms to add velocity this coming year as he continues to grow.

Matthew Donnison RHP / OF / St. Paul High School, ON / 2022 Rankings  StateRank: 10 / POS: 4 Report: Donnison, a member of the Jr. Future Games this year and got the start against a deep and talented Mississippi team is a right-hander arm that works in the back and mixes in a curveball with spin and 11/5 shape, with the ability to throw for strikes. Donnison repeats his delivery well, the arm is clean and on time, and the dual sport talent (Hockey prospect as well) has tools and stuff on the mound to work with and be a guy to keep track of moving forward.

MORE LHH CANADIANS

We seem to continue to produce Left-handed hitting talent, and catchers with this 2022 crop looking to follow that path.

Hugh Pinkney C / OF / Silverthorn CI, ON / 2022 Rankings  StateRank: 4 / POS: 1 Report: The top catcher in our 2022 class, Hugh Pinkney is your standard Canadian catcher. Trying to follow in the footsteps of Andy Yerzy, and Noah Naylor to name a few, Pinkney is a twitchy catcher with feel. At 6-0, 155 pounds, he’s got a wiry build that works behind the plate for his age. Pinkney commands a pitching staff, and also shows an advanced feel for hitting from the left side of the plate.

Colby Ariss RHP / SS / Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic, ON / 2022 Rankings  StateRank: 7 / POS: 3 Report: Ariss, long and lean left-handed hitting middle infielder, along with actions that play on the mound is a gut you need to know. There is looseness and bat speed in the swing, mixed with a frame that will add size and muscle, Ariss could make strides quickly and present wiry strength to make an impact now and continue to get stronger, more polished and refined.

Josh McGuin C / 3B / Forest Hill Collegiate, ON / 2022 Rankings  StateRank: 8 / POS: 2 Report: The left-handed hitting catcher is an offensive threat with one of the nicest swings in the class. There is bat speed and pop to his pull side right now, and he does not get cheated with big swings, that at times will result in some swing and miss. The ball jumps off the bat and presently is the carrying tool for McGuin. He has some work to do defensively and refine a few things, but the swing makes you watch and not want to miss an at-bat, which makes McGuin a very interesting 2022 moving forward.

SLEEPERS

Ryan Lieng RHP / 1B / Bishop reding, ON / 2022 Rankings  StateRank: 14 / POS: 7 Report: Lieng, we saw with the Milton Mets, now moves on to GLC for the fall and is an intriguing right-handed arm with feel for a breaking ball. There is rhythm with upbeat tempo in the delivery, working out a ¾ slot. It’s quick and clean and can see him continuing to develop on the mound.

Nolan Hartley SS / RHP / Maxwell Heights, ON / 2022 Rankings  StateRank: 31 / POS: 5 Report: Hartley patrolled shortstop during the 15u Nationals for Oshawa this past August and moved well on the dirt with glove actions and showed us his range and ability to attack different angles from short. Came up clutch with walk-off knock early on, an athletic young infielder with feel and actions to watch moving forward.

Owen Constantineau 1B / 3B / Colonel By, ON / 2022 Rankings  StateRank: 28 / POS: 2 Report: Constantineau opened eyes at our Ottawa Scout day this summer as his left-handed bat was on display during BP with bat speed and balance throughout. He gets the bat started with rhythm and load in his hands, worked more to pull side with some juice while the barrel stayed inside and he was able to make consistent hard contact. Will need some polish defensively with arm strength and where he ends up on the diamond, but the bat makes him an intriguing follow into the 2020 season.
