2018 Western PA Fall Scout Day

The 2018 Western PA Fall Review took place on September 15th at La Roche College. Prospects gathered to put themselves on the recruiting radar by participating in a showcase workout followed by a nine inning game. Today we analyze the Class of 2019 participants in attendance.

Top Prospects

Jared Lominski, 2019, Moniteau, C

Jared LominskiDefensively, flashes good flexibility in providing a low, wide target. Glove hand is soft and confident while consistently beating ball to spot. Blocking technique is solid with 6-foot-1, physical frame providing a soft square and wide wall. Feet and hands are quick and are synced well on throw of 79 mph out of the crouch. A 2.00 pop time was registered on throw of 79 mph.

Offensively, 6-foot-1, 185-pound right-handed hitter, initiates swing from neutra set up with short, controlled stride staying neutral. Separation is excellent. Weight shift is passive followed by an aggressive hip turn. Bat path is slightly uphill and there is some length. Swings with intent achieving substantial barrel whip. Ball jumps off bat pull side power evident in an impressive round of BP. Registered a 93 mph bat exit velocity. Projects as next level power bat

Troy Emert, 2019, Rockwood Area, RHP/SS

Troy EmertDefensively, as middle infielder shows confident hands, soft hands while working bottom up and out front. Transfer is clean and quick. Feet are active in creating optimal angles and hops. Consistently works through the ball and demonstrates solid range.

Offensively, 5-foot-9, 180-pound, right handed hitter initiates swing from neutral set up with short controlled stride to neutral. Weight shift is passive followed by an aggressive hip turn. Bat path is slightly steep into the zone. Emert consistently barreled ball during am impressive round of BP. He registered a bat exit velocity of 87 mph and blasted a long triple into the left centerfield gap during game play.

On the mound, the right-hander works out of a high 3/4 arm slot. FB sat 78-81 while being intermittently cut to glove side. Curveball at 65-67 mph was not as tight on this day as previously seen while having 11/5 shape. Slider at 69-70 mph has short, late break with limited tilt. Delivery is moderate effort and repeatable.

Brycen Virgili, 2019, Canon-McMillan, OF

Brycen VirgiliDefensively, movements are fluid and athletic in outfield. Virgili gets behind and plays through ball in the air and on the ground. Over the top arm slot while staying behind ball lends to accurate throws of 77 mph.

Offensively, 6-foot, 180-pound right-handed hitter, initiates swing from open set up with reverse toe tap and stride to neutral. Swings with intent showing aggressive weight shift and hip turn. There is balance, rhythm and obvious athleticism. Hands are quick and work directly. Bat path is slightly uphill. Leverage and extension are solid. A bat exit velocity of 88 mph was registered. Virgili projects as an offensive sleeper in the Class of 2019.

Kullen Crosby, 2019, Coudersport, 3B

Kullen CrosbyDefensively, at third base shows soft hands funneling bottom up and out front. feet are active to and through the ball. Gains ground on and follows throws. Registered 77 mph arm strength on throws across the diamond.

Offensively, 6-foot, 180-pound right-handed hitter, initiates swing from open, wide set up with short stride to neutral. Separation is solid. Weight shift and hip turn are aggressive. There is balance and rhythm. Bat is on plane early and late. Swing has length. Barrel feel was present in routinely squaring ball during solid BP round. Strength and mechanics played to bat exit velocity of 91 mph.

REMAINDER OF THE ROSTER (IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER)

Noah Bloom, 2019, Dubois Central Catholic, SS/RHP

Defensively, as middle infielder shows adequate hands and solid range. There is tendency to play the ball deep and work top down. Transfer and arm action are clean on throws of 70 mph across the diamond.

Offensively, 6-foot-1, 190-pound right-handed hitter, initiates swing from open setup with aggressive leg kick and stride to neutral. Excellent separation is achieved in weight shift away from hands. Back elbow is active in working up and back in load. Hands start high, work down and then again back up in load. Bat path is steep into zone. Ability to achieve backspin was evident in BP with present pull side power demonstrated. A bat exit velocity of 88 mph was recorded.

On the mound, Bloom worked out of a high 3/4 arm slot featuring a repeatable, moderate effort delivery. Fastball sat 75 mph while being true and thrown at effective downhill plane. Slider at 66-69 mph and curveall at 59 mph had similar 11/5 shape and rolling action. Change up at 65 was thrown with good sell and subtle arm side fade.

Mark Caggiano, 2019, Gateway, 3B/SS

Defensively, at 3B flashes excellent area quickness and soft confident hands. He funnels bottom up and out front. Footwork is solid to and through the ball with arm strength of 79 mph present on throws across the diamond.

Offensively, 5-foot-11, 175-pound, right-handed hitter initiates swing from slightly open set up with controlled stride staying open. Separation is solid. Weight shift and hip turn are aggressive. There is considerable length. A bat exit velocity of 87 mph was registered. 

Danny Leitholf, 2019, Gateway, RHP/1B

Leithoff, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound, right-hander worked out of a mid 3/4 arm slot with repeatable moderate effort delivery. Fastball sat 72-75 mph and was commanded to all quadrants. Curveball at 62-64 featured 11/5 shape and moderate depth. Slider sat 70-71 with 11/4 late, short, one plane break. Mix was solid and command outstanding in working three clean innings.

John Montross, 2019, North Allegheny, OF

Defensively shows solid athleticism while tracking. Montross is decisive in reads and takes direct routes. Foot speed is above average in recording a 6.88 60-yard dash.

Offensively, 5-foot-11, 175-pound, right-handed hitter initiates swing from wide, neutral set up with knee to knee movement and stride to neutral. Separation is adequate. Weight shift and hip turn are aggressive. There is considerable lowering of height following heel plant with associated head movement. Hands are loose and quick. Bat path is slightly uphill. A bat exit velocity of 81 mph was recorded.

Andy Sopata, 2019, Baldwin, OF/2B

Defensively, gets behind and plays through ball in the air. Flashed developing arm strength on throws of 77 mph from the outfield. Quick twitch skills are evident in Spata recording a 6.91 60-yard dash time.

Defensively, as middle infielder athleticism was present in demonstrating above average range and area quickness. Soft hands are noted in funneling out front and bottom up. Sopata would benefit from being more aggressive in attacking ball to create optimal angles and hops.

Offensively, 6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitter, initiates swing from an open set up with knee lift and short stride to neutral. Separation is reduced by early hand leak. Weight shift is passive followed by an aggressive hip turn. Bat path is flat and short. Hands are loose and quick. There is balance and rhythm while recording a 79 mph bat exit velocity.

Tony Tamilia, 2019, Moon Area, 3B/RHP

Defensively, at third base hands are soft and confident. There was subtle, intermittent tendency to work bottom down on this day. Feet are active in creating hops and angles as well as gaining ground on throws.Flashed accurate 79 mph arm on throws across the diamond.

Offensively, 6-foot, 165-pound right-handed hitter initiates swing from slightly open setup with pronounced stride to neutral. Separation is excellent. Weight shift and hip turn are aggressive. Overall lower half mechanics are advanced. Hands are loose in creating substantial whip. Bat is on plane early and late. There is above average barrel feel. An 88 mph bat exit velocity was registered. Tamilia's mechanics are cleaner than when last seen three months ago and presents as a 2019 offensive sleeper.

On the mound, right-hander continued to show previously seen long-loose arm action from low 3/4 arm slot. Velocity was down on this day with fastball sitting 72-73 mph. Change up at 65 mph was thrown at fastball arm speed demonstrating subtle arm side fade. Curveball was inconsistent on this day showing 11/4 shape ad rolling action. Tamilia impressed by mixing well and staying out of middle of plate in working two scoreless innings without his best stuff.

Seth Pinkerton, 2019, Union Area, OF/2B

Defensively, in outfield actions are fluid and athletic. Pinkerton attacks ball on the ground with proper technique and confident love hand. He would benefit from allowing his above average foot speed, 6.94 60-yard dash, to play up by being more decisive in his reads.

Offensively, 5-foot-10, 165-pound right-handed hitter initiates swing from neutral set up with knee to knee leg kick and stride staying neutral. Separation is solid. Weight shift and hip turn are aggressive. Bat is on plane early and late with flat path. Pinkerton showed excellent barrel feel in spraying line drives to all field during a solid round of BP A bat exit velocity of 83 mph was registered.
