PA/WV Top Pitching Performances of the Summer

With the completion of the West Virginia Top Prospect Games the summer schedule of events in Pennsylvania and West Virginia have drawn to a close. In preparation for the start of the fall schedule of events that begin in September we now look back on some of the top performances of the summer.

Today we begin by taking a look at the top pitching performances of the summer at a PBR event in Pennsylvania or West Virginia.


#1  Scott leitholf, 2017, RHP, (Northern York, PA)


Leitholf impressed at the PA Top Prospect Games in June leading to an invitation to represent Team Pennsylvania at the PBR Future Games in August. The righty was dominant in three hitless innings of work at the Future Games, mixing a fastball that topped at 86 mph with a rapidly developing curveball at 74 mph and a solid changeup at 72 mph. Leitholf struck out four and allowed one walk in his impressive performance. The 6-foot-5, 170-mph righty pounded the zone and stayed off barrels with command of all three offerings.

#2  Gavin Hinchliffe, 2017, RHP, (Pottsville Area, PA)


Hinchliffe has some strength in his 5-foot-10, 170-pound frame. The righty pitched out of an over-the-top slot with a stiff wrist at the PA Top Prospect Games in June. Hinchliffe had some life on a fastball that sat 85-87, touching 88, and was able to run it in on right-handed hitters. His breaking ball with 11/5 action at 76-78 had short, hard tilt with occasionally true slider action. Hinchliffe also showed a change-up at 74-75 as a rarely-used third pitch.

#3  Brendan Cellucci, 2017, LHP, (Penn Charter, PA)


Cellucci has a projectable frame (6-foot-4, 190-pounds) with long limbs. The lefty pitched out of an over-the-top slot from an athletic delivery with some head snap at the PA Top Prospect Games in June. Cellucci's fastball sat 85-87 and showed late action at the front of the plate. His slow, big-breaking curveball with 11/5 action at 62-64 serves as a borderline eephus pitch given its nearly 25-mph difference from his fastball. Cellucci's four-pitch mix also included a slider at 68-69 and straight change-up at 74-76.

#4  Tim Miller, 2016, RHP, (Conestoga, PA)


Miller impressed at the PA Top Prospect Games in June and later verbally committed to Richmond. The righty has a strong, athletic build (6-foot-2, 190-pounds). Miller utilizes an overhead rocker and swings his lead leg into a slight hip coil over rubber. He pitched from a low three-quarter slot with low elbow with a slight crossfire delivery. Miller located down in the zone well with his fastball that sat 85-87. He also occasionally mixed in an improving curveball with 11/5 action at 73-74.

#5  Zach Kokoska, 2017, LHP/OF, (Greater Latrobe ,PA)


Kokoska is a 6-foot-1, 185-pound two-way prospect that impressed at the Western PA College Prospect Showcase in June. The lefty sat 83-85 while topping at 87 mph multiple times from a 3/4 arm slot with hard cut to his fastball. Kokoska displayed an up-tempo athletic delivery with a quick arm (91 mph from the outfield). His 77 mph slider showed tight, late break although command was an issue at times. Kokoska also showcased an 80 mph changeup at near fastball arm speed. He has a projectable frame and his above average athleticism projects for additional velocity gains moving forward. Kokoska went on to throw three effective innings as a member of Team Pennsylvania at the PBR Future Games in August.
