2018 Future Games - Team Ohio Preview
One of the most anticipated events of the year is finally upon us.
The seventh annual Prep Baseball Report Future Games will take place Aug. 1-4 when top uncommitted prospects in the classes of 2020, 2021 and 2022 converge on Grand Park in Westfield, Ind., just north of Indianapolis. There will be 24 teams, including Team Ohio, with players representing 35 states plus the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Ontario and Quebec.
More than 200 colleges from across the country will be looking on as approximately 500 players participate in this year’s event. In 2017, a record 247 college and professional coaches and scouts were in attendance, an increase of nearly 100 from the year prior.
“The Future Games has quickly become the most highly scouted showcase event in the country by college coaches,” Chris Valentine, PBR Executive Director for Ohio, Michigan, Canada and New England, said after last year’s event. “As PBR adds new coverage areas, it brings new players and new college coaches to the event. It is exciting to think of the potential as we move forward.”
Participants have come away from the premiere event more than impressed.
“PBR has created a one-of-a-kind experience,” said Logan Danzeisen, a member of Team Ohio last year.
The Sylvania Southview 2020 is one of three Ohio players returning from last year’s squad. Another is Justin Silverstein, a junior at Turpin.
“Participating in the Future Games will most likely be the most and best looks from scouts you will get as a baseball player, helping you get to the next level,” the shortstop said. “Even if you don’t get offered or talk to a school right away you will be put on their radar.”
While three (the other is Josh Romans) of the 22 players on last year’s Team Ohio are back, 18 of the remaining 19 players have made a college commitment. Cincinnati, Ohio State, South Carolina, Kent State, Kentucky, Texas Tech, Nebraska, Toledo, Ohio, Butler, Campbell and Miami all have commitments from 2017 Team Ohio players.
In addition, four of five Ohio players that competed on Team Ontario have also made college commitments since last year’s event, with Liberty, Nebraska and Ohio signing participants from the Buckeye State.
Mac Horvath of Rochester Century High School became the second MVP of the Future Games from Minnesota after earning the 2017 honor. Sam Carlson of Burnsville, Minn., was the 2015 MVP. Carlson was a second-round selection of the Mariners in the 2017 MLB Draft.
Dillon Lifrieri of Wilton High School in Connecticut, a 2018 graduate heading to Arkansas, was the 2016 MVP in between the two Minnesota standouts. Duncan Pence of Farragut High School in Tennessee, was the 2014 MVP while Nolan Watson of Lawrence North in Indiana took home the 2013 honor. Watson went on to become a first-round draft pick of the Kansas City Royals in 2015.
The only Future Games player from Ohio to be drafted in the first round was Evan White of Gahanna Lincoln and the University of Kentucky. White played on Team Ohio in 2014 and is now playing with the Modesto Nuts in the Advanced Class A California League.
“The Future Games was a great experience because you go to play games as well as do a scout day/workout before it all started,” explained White, a first-round pick of the Seattle Mariners in 2017 who had after a brief stint in Class AAA that featured a 3-4 performance with two doubles in his Tacoma Rainiers’ debut back in early June. “It was great to meet a bunch of the top recruits from around the midwest.”
An Ohio squad of 28 players will be among those playing at the state-of-the-art 22-field complex. It starts with an evaluation day on Wednesday in which position players are put through a showcase workout that includes running 60s, batting practice and field evaluation.
Teams will play games on Thursday through Saturday, with Ohio facing Pennsylvania on Thursday at 4:30 p.m., Canada on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Michigan on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., with all Team Ohio games on Field D3.
“The Future Games are everything a baseball player with aspirations of playing D1 baseball could ask for,” said Jordan Chiero, Ohio Director of Scouting for PBR. “These guys get to perform against elite level talent and do it in front of over 250 college/pro scouts from each region of the country. It can and has changed the entire landscape of a prospect’s recruitment. It’s not only the biggest stage PBR offers but one of the biggest stages in the country.”
Following is a look at Team Ohio and the thoughts of each player heading into the Future Games.

PBR: Give a short report on your spring baseball season and what you have done this summer. Roebuck: As a team we finished with a 19-5 record. We won the NWOAL with a 7-0 record. PBR: Give a short report on your spring baseball season and what you have done this summer. Kaczmar: I play for Walsh Jesuit High School and our season went extremely well. Our final record was 23-4. Our pitchers were lights out and hitting was on. I got a lot of playing time behind the plate as a sophomore and could say I had a very successful season. This summer I've played for Ohio Elite North with head coach Rob Beahn. Our season didn't go much as planned mostly due to the competition we have faced. As a team, we went to Arizona, Indiana, the Perfect Game tournament in Georgia, which was especially difficult from a hitters standpoint, and Chicago. As a team we are a little above 500. We've also done well in the local tournaments we've been in. I am glad to say I am more than satisfied with my performance this summer.
PBR: What are your thoughts about being part of Team Ohio for the Future Games? Kaczmar: My thoughts on being apart of Team Ohio is a blessing. I am very honored to be apart of such a high-class organization and proud to be representing the state of Ohio. I can't wait for the Future Games and have always heard extremely good things from this event.
PBR: What are your expectations for the event? Kaczmar: My expectations for the Future Game this year is basically to have the college coaches that are attending to have a good taste of what type of player I am. I will be competing to my full potential and will hope for the best for me and also others while making new friends on and off the fields. I have heard great things from this event from my friends that have gone there in the past and have done extremely well which has led them on into offers and recruitments from Big 10 schools. I think very highly of this event.
PBR: What PBR events have you participated in prior to the Future Games? Kaczmar: This year has been the first year I've been associated with PBR and I have attended three other PBR events aside from the Future Games, the Stark Summit (invite only) in February. the PBR/Ohio Elite baseball showcase at Pinnacle Sports and the Top Prospect Games (invite only) at Prasco Park.
PBR: What colleges have you heard from and considering attending? Kaczmar: I have not talked to any specific schools that are going to be attending the event yet but I know all schools from different regions will be attending, D1, D2, D3 and NAIA and more. I know this event is highly scouted. I will consider texting the recruiting coordinator at Youngstown State because they have shown a lot of interest in me after going on my official visit with the coaches.

AJ Rausch OF / SS / Olentangy Liberty, OH / 2020
PBR: Give a short report on your spring baseball season and what you have done this summer. Rausch: Overall, the two seasons (spring and summer) have been great. In the spring, our team won the D1 State Championship. It was a cool experience to play in Huntington Park. We finished with a 30-4 record and were the first state baseball champs at Olentangy Liberty. My summer season has gone really well. I think I've grown as a player throughout the summer taking what I learned from my high school coaches to now. Our team has been doing pretty well. I'm leading the team in stolen bases and have one of the highest batting averages on the team.
PBR: What are your thoughts about being part of Team Ohio for the Future Games? Rausch: I was super excited to get the call from Jordan Chiero. I know how big this event is and I’m looking forward to a great experience. This is a chance to play with some of the best players in Ohio and compete against other states.
PBR: What are your expectations for the event? Rausch: My expectations for the event are to do what I’ve been doing all season - play hard and compete. I’m looking forward to showcasing my abilities in front of a lot of college scouts.
PBR: What PBR events have you participated in prior to the Future Games? Rausch: My first showcase at PBR was last year at the Underclass Games at Wright State. Then I attended a Bo Jackson Scout Day. Next was the Top Prospect Games (TPG) at Prasco Park where I ran my 6.63. Then last week was the TPG at Wright State.
PBR: What colleges have you heard from and considering attending? Rausch: I received an offer from George Washington and have spoken to Ohio State, Ohio U, Miami and Wright State throughout the past year. I’m excited to see what the next couple of months may bring - It’s been a fun ride.

Sean Springer SS / 2B / Holy Name, OH / 2020
PBR: Give a short report on your spring baseball season and what you have done this summer. Springer: This Spring I Played for Holy Name High School. We had a solid season but unfortunately came up short in the playoffs against a quality team.Although we didn't reach our ultimate goal, I was voted Great Lakes Conference first team and Northeast Ohio D11 All-District honorable mention. This summer I played for Force Ohio Prime. We have had a great season so far and I really enjoy traveling around the eastern part of the country playing not only the best teams in Ohio but the best teams from the 16U division in national tournaments (i.e. Music City Classic). We have also played up this summer in an 18U tournament and two 17U tournaments which has given me the chance to play against great competition. Personally, I am hitting around .400 for the summer with 22 extra base hits including two home runs.
PBR: What are your thoughts about being part of Team Ohio for the Future Games? Springer: Being apart of Team Ohio for the Future Games is a goal I have been working toward for a long time now. It means a lot to know the hard work I have put in up until this point has paid off. I'm very thankful for PBR and honored they have recognized me as a representative for Team Ohio. I'm looking forward to representing Team Ohio and excited for a chance to play against the best of the best. There's still work to be done, but this a big step toward my ultimate goal.
PBR: What are your expectations for the event? Springer: My expectations are for my teammates and I to represent that state of Ohio and show the quality of baseball talent in this state. I believe Ohio has some of the best baseball talent in the country and this is a good opportunity for us to prove that. I am also looking forward to showcasing my baseball skills in front of college scouts while making new friends and playing alongside the best talent Ohio has to offer.
PBR: What PBR events have you participated in prior to the Future Games? Springer: I have participated in the PBR Top Prospect Games, Northern Ohio Prospect Games and Fall Future Games Trials.
PBR: What colleges have you heard from and considering attending? Springer: I have spoken with West Virginia, Cincinnati, Ohio University, Bucknell and Fairleigh Dickinson. I also recently have spoken with and received an invite for a camp at the University of Tennessee. They are all great schools that offer what I plan to study in college (Criminology).
