High School Scout Blog: Week 6
May 24, 2019
Our team of Ground Force Scouts are out and about across the Empire State this spring. Each week we will release a comprehensive list of players that have caught our eye during our travels.
Isaiah Corry SS / Clarence , NY / 2019Slender, athletic build. Moves really well; fluid actions in the field with confident hands. Plenty of range and arm to stick at shortstop at the next level. Calm and balanced setup at the plate. Selective approach, looking for pitches to drive from the left side. Very good bat speed and plane to his swing. Stung the ball a couple times today without any luck. Binghamton commit.

Jack Putney 3B / SS / Clarence , NY / 2019Strong build with good movements. Uses his hands well at the plate with a patient approach. Flat swing plane from the left side with good bat speed and extension through contact. Came in late in the game to throw two innings. Repeatable delivery with very good use of his lower half. Fastball sat 84-86, with good life through the zone coming from good extension in the delivery. Also flashed an 11-5 breaking ball at 74-75 MPH. Definite two way potential at the next level. St. Bonaventure commit.
Andrew Fairbrother 3B / SS / Williamsville North, NY / 2019Large, strong frame. Played SS today and moved well but believe his home at the next level is 3B. Showed off good arm strength on some tough plays. Good at bats at the plate against a couple of tough arms. Really uses his hands well with a flat swing, and has power potential from his lower half that isn’t being used presently. Niagara County Community College commit.
Ian McNabb LHP / OF / Webster Thomas, NY / 2021Long, athletic build. Quick twitch movements and a fast arm paired with a frame that can add growth show a high long term upside. Athletic and loose delivery. Fastball sat at 77-79 MPH with good downhill plane. Breaking ball had 12-6 shape with good downhill bite at 61-62. Had a little bit of a fist fight with the strike zone today, but competed very well and battled through some tough situations.
MItchell Kelly OF / RHP / Webster Thomas, NY / 2021Tall body with a large frame, lots of room to fill out in the future. Flat swing plane with good extension through ball. Really battled through at bats against tough competition. Picked up a couple opposite field hits, showing a mature approach. Ran the bases really well with good instincts. Not much game action on defense but showed an above average arm in pregame I/O. High upside prospect.
Cooper Crunick 3B / Canandaigua, NY / 2019Large, muscular build. Strength throughout body. Started the game on the mound. Very sound and simple mechanics. Fastball sat 80-83 MPH with good life. Also featured a tight, cutter like breaking ball at 70-72 MPH. Filled up the zone. At the plate he is a presence in the middle of the lineup. Mostly pitched around but did smoke a single into left field, showing off quick hands that he kept inside the ball very well. Easy to see the potential with the bat. Played the game with a high baseball IQ on both sides of the ball. Binghamton commit.
Matthew Stam OF / LHP / S.S. Seward, NY / 2019Athletic build for the L/L senior. Arm works quick; primarily used the stretch with a high ¾ slot and some recoil. FB ranged 78-82, touching an 83/84 early on. Once his command came around he was able to use his breaking ball which has more down action then lateral. At the plate he uses an exaggerated toe-tap early in his timing; solid contact reaching on an error in two of his AB’s. Patrols center field with ease and arm holds it’s carry.
Jacob Yager 1B / RHP / Tri-Valley, NY / 2021The broad shouldered R/R sophomore continues to impress. Generally sits down and the zone and sprinkles in a 79-81 MPH 2S FB to his arm side with a 4-seamer that he pounds glove side 81-83 MPH, touching an 84 and 85 early on. Short slider/breaking ball wasn’t as sharp as the first time seeing him this year but still serviceable. At the plate he uses an upright and open setup with a short swing path. Gathered a couple walks, a hard hit single and a line out to CF.
Jason Rubilotta / Christian Brothers Academy, NY / 20185-foot-11 with a strong build. Stands in the box with a wide athletic base. Loose hands with a small load. Natural bat whip through the hitting zone, gets full extension and hips clear. Balanced throughout the swing with a one hand finish. Went 1-3 with a double in the game versus Shaker.
Patrick Walters OF / RHP / Shaker , NY / 20206-foot 2, with an athletic frame. Stands tall with a slight bend in the knees and hands rest high above the shoulders. Uses a low leg kick to stride forward before entering the hitting zone. Gets in and out of the hitting zone quickly. Went 1-3 with 2 RBI’s versus CBA-Albany.

Grady Stevenson OF / Croton Harmon, NY / 20195-foot-8 195 pounds; Throws right / hits left - SUNY Cortland commit with big power. Got his second Grand Slam of the week, in big 7-2 Croton Harmon win over Westlake. Sets up slightly open and goes hands to ball with tremendous bat speed. Has a tendency to get ahead of the pitch, but if he develops the discipline to stay behind the ball is capable of doing damage and hitting for average. 2019 RHP Austin Mann (Williamsville North)
Very strong and athletic build. Fluid and quick twitch athlete. Drop and drive delivery to the plate. Filled the zone with 82-84 MPH fastball and a late breaking slider at 66-68. Kept the ball down and produced a lot of soft contact. High upside for his future. Niagara County Community College commit.
2022 RHP Jacob Shaken (Great Neck North)
Tall, long, projectable pitchers frame. Has a lot of room to grow. Athletic, lean. Above average command with his 70 mph FB on the outer half. With some added weight and better use of his legs, the potential is big down the road. Stays closed off on his drive, which affects his command in & out. Tends to drop his throwing elbow in his “drop & drive” which loses leverage for himself. Steps it up as a competitor when guys get in scoring position. Attacks and battles hard. Velocity will come with physical development. Varies speeds on CB at 64-65 with 12-6 action, also has a get me over curve that’s 61-62, more of an 11-5 shape.
Athletic quick twitch outfielder. Great jumps and reads on fly balls. Above average arm with a lot of room to grow. Great QB out in centerfield (very communicative). At the plate, too pull happy, when he learns to use the field, his potential is limitless. Very short compact swing. Not a lot of movement going on in his body, but still transfers a good amount of power from his explosive hips. Above average speed out of the box and on the basepaths. Has to learn reads off the bat as a runner, will come with time.
2020 OF/1B/LHP Justin Osborne (Shaker)
6-foot-0, LHH outfielder/first baseman. Show an even stance at the plate, with slight closed off front side and toe tap for timing. Above average pull side power. Long swing path with a high finish. Produced 2 hits in 3 at bats and a stolen base playing RF.

A 6-foot-5 athletic frame. Helped Windsor win a league game. On the mound, he sat 75-77, peaked at 79 MPH with arm side run. Good use more leg drive. Throws from a mid ¾ arm slot. At the plate, stands in a tall narrow stance. Should impressive natural pop with consistent hard contact. Runs well on the base paths for a guy his size. Energy type player.

A 5-foot-10 athletic strong frame. Impressive day at the play. Good plate awareness. Showed some pop with a short swing. Hit a HR in his first at bat. Made a nice diving play in the OF running back on the ball. Makes the routine plays. Projects as a corner INF or OF at the college level. His bat will get will play at the next level.
