EMERSON, Ga. - A Prep Baseball Report event that first began in 2011 is now more than a decade old. But the fun and interest received is anything but old when it comes to the Future Games.
This year’s showcase drew raves from so many in attendance watching 32 teams with players from 41 states and five Canadian provinces participating in front of approximately 350 college coaches.
“I'm not positive of the exact number of college coaches, but what stood out to me was how many schools traveled with the maximum number (3) of coaches in attendance,” related Shooter Hunt, vice president of scouting for PBR. “It is usually rare to see major head coaches out on the road, but the Future Games saw a plethora of BIG named head coaches walking around.”
What all coaches at LakePoint witnessed was impressive - to say the least - during the four-day event.
“I think the overall median level of talent was ultra impressive,” Hunt said. “There was so much to watch on each team throughout the entire roster that I felt like I was missing more than I was seeing. It's what makes the Future Games so special: there is something for every coach to watch for on each team. The staffs that brought multiple coaches were rewarded best because they were likely able to see the most.”
One major change made this year was with the schedules, each team playing different opponents from previous years at the Future Games.
“I LOVED the new schedule, and I think that it helped rejuvenate the kids and staff after a long summer of playing against the same regional talent,” pointed out Hunt. “It was especially evident when the Ohio boys took on Florida. Ohio played like it had something to prove, and with a plethora of SEC and ACC coaches watching, I thought that they made the most of that big stage.”
Massachusetts sandwiched a 7-6 win over Ohio around losses to Mid-Atlantic and Florida during the three-day event.
“The team played well, I thought we swung the bat very well and ran the bases extremely well,” noted PBR Massachusetts scouting director Dennis Healy. “The pitching had its moments. I think there were too many base-on-balls across the board for all teams.
“Offensively, Eliot Medlock, Tate Bannish, Jake Hadju, Cameron Papetti, Carter Bentley, Jace Roossien, Fletcher Waterman and Anthony Ruggiero all showed well with the bat. On the mound, Beau Elson, Jake Cullen, Cole Taylor, Watson Mexico, Charlie Walsh, Jake Zawatsky and Carter Bentley all threw the ball well.”
Healy was pleased with the Future Games in general.
“This year's event was super-well run,” Healy said. “ Everything was on schedule and the workers were great. The players had a blast.
“I liked playing the new states,” Healy added. “It made for a different experience for the players and myself.”
Hunt saw a lot to like in teams from the northeast.
“Teams like Connecticut and Massachusetts got to perform against some good out-of-region teams, and showcased strong skills,” Hunt said. “Massachusetts, in particular, rolled out some quick-armed southpaws that I really liked.”
Massachusetts also showed well in the Junior Future Games, according to Steve Alhona, who headed up the younger squads.
“I thought this year's Junior Futures team was really talented, despite our record,” Alhona said. “Jackson Almeida, Morrie Fried, James Rabuse and Jack Murray are legitimate Division-1 talents. I also brought a 2027, Sean Achorn, that has a chance to be a good one in the infield.
Additionally, Alhona pointed to Zack Tarrier and Oliver Service, both from New Hampshire, as up-and-coming players in the area.
Hunt feels strongly that those participating, no matter the level, are more than worthy of being part of such a prestigious event.
“Every player at the Future Games has been evaluated by the PBR staff, so their presence alone means that they have next-level talent,” explained Hunt. “Many players had strong, breakout weeks, but even the guys who didn't see in-game success are still likely very much on college coaches' radars. I think it is important for those kids who didn't think that they performed well to understand that it was only four days, and college coaches are evaluating much more than whether or not they produced in that short window.”
A PBR thank you to all that participated and a special thanks to the players on Team Massachusetts that gave their thoughts about the event (including what schools have been in contact with them since the event):

PBR: Touch on the competition you faced at the event. I only played one game, against Team Florida, but overall they were a solid team. Good bats at the plate.
PBR: How can participating in the Future Games help you in the future? Participating in the Future Games can help you open eyes at one of the top facilities in America. It is one of the best recruiting events I’ve ever been to.
PBR: What, if any, college coaches did you talk to at the event or hear from since the event ended? Going into the event I had one offer and have had three phone calls going into the event. Personally, I now have been on up to 10 coaches' college radars that I know of.

Austin Campbell LHP / OF / Franklin, MA / 2024
PBR: What were your Future Games highlights? My Future Games highlights were meeting lots of new players and being able to compete with some of the best players in the country.
PBR: Assess your performance. I did not have my best stuff on the day of my outing but I was able to battle out of some jams.
PBR: Give your thoughts on being part of Team Massachusetts and what stood out. Being part of Team Massachusetts was a great experience because I got to bond with players who I might face back in New England so it was cool to be able to play with those guys.
PBR: Touch on the competition you faced at the event. The competition was top notch for sure. Lots of really good hitters, and many pitchers throwing a lot harder than you see pitchers throw in New England.
PBR: How can participating in the Future Games help you in the future? Participating in the Future Games can help me in the future by facing some of the best competition that you would face at the college level in the future. It was also good seeing where you are compared to others across the country.

Jake Cullen RHP / OF / Westford Academy, MA / 2024
PBR: What were your Future Games highlights? The Future Games was super exciting and fun to compete against people from all around. Even though I am a pitcher only, it was a blast sitting on the bench and cheering on my teammates.
PBR: Assess your performance. I played pretty well, with obviously some things I can improve on. But that’s why I love baseball because there are so many ways to improve your game. My top fastball velo was 87 which I felt like was pretty good. I’ve thrown harder but it was good for what the weather conditions were, rain delays and the fact it was really humid.
PBR: Give your thoughts on being part of Team Massachusetts and what stood out. There’s always people that stand out and I felt like we had three people that stood out to me and they were all players out in the field. Hits after hits, those kids were electric, so fun to watch. All the technology they had at LakePoint was incredible.
PBR: Touch on the competition you faced at the event. The competition was great. I pitched against PBR Florida and they had some great players. I had to mix a lot of breaking balls so they wouldn’t make contact.
PBR: How can participating in the Future Games help you in the future? If anybody wants to play college baseball, the Future Games are for sure the place to be. Everywhere you look there is a college coach ready to see some kids compete. They will see everything you do. Also, it’s great to see where you truly stand against some of the best players out there in your grade.
PBR: What, if any, college coaches did you talk to at the event or hear from since the event ended? I’ve been in contact with some college coaches but when September hits, hopefully, some will be interested in me. When I played Florida I was unlucky to have a rain/lighting delay and most of the college coaches left but I truly wanted to see where I stand against those kids. I found out college baseball is what I want to pursue and thrive in the future.

Beau Elson LHP / OF / Phillips Exeter Academy, NH / 2024
PBR: What were your Future Games highlights? My highlights were just being on the mound competing and being in the dugout with all of the Massachusetts guys a lot of which I’ve played against during high school or summer baseball.
PBR: Assess your performance. I threw well overall. I did a good job getting ahead with the fastball allowing me to get swings and misses on pitches out of the zone. I think I could have thrown the change-up more. I didn’t have a lot of confidence in it but I needed to just trust it and start throwing it more.
PBR: Give your thoughts on being part of Team Massachusetts and what stood out. Being part of Team Massachusetts I was able to get to know and play with players that I’ve competed against.
PBR: Touch on the competition you faced at the event. I was able to throw against Ohio and they could definitely swing it but I tried to not let that change my game plan and still just attack them with the fastball.
PBR: How can participating in the Future Games help you in the future? Being from Massachusetts it’s hard to get exposure from schools that aren’t from the northeast so attending the Future Games allows you to get seen by schools that normally would never have the opportunity to see you.
PBR: What, if any, college coaches did you talk to at the event or hear from since the event ended? Georgia Tech, Stanford, Northwestern, Ohio State, Duke, George Washington, College of Charleston.

PBR: Give your thoughts on being part of Team Massachusetts and what stood out. I was very happy to be a part of Team Massachusetts and with a great group of talented players
PBR: Touch on the competition you faced at the event. The competition was great with a lot of high-level arms and a lot of high-level bats.
PBR: How can participating in the Future Games help you in the future? Participating in the Future Games will help me get exposed to multiple coaches.
PBR: What, if any, college coaches did you talk to at the event or hear from since the event ended? I am in contact with UMass-Lowell.

Sachin Gopal RHP / C / Wellesley, MA / 2024
PBR: What were your Future Games highlights? The highlight of the Future Games was getting to throw in front of a ton of coaches and get my name out there.
PBR: Assess your performance. I think I pitched pretty well. I struck out two, gave up one hit and walked one guy. I worked efficiently and pitched to contact.
PBR: Give your thoughts on being part of Team Massachusetts and what stood out. Being part of Team Massachusetts was incredible. I got to play with some of the best kids in the state and everyone performed at an extremely high level.
PBR: Touch on the competition you faced at the event. The competition was really good. The hitters I faced were very disciplined at the plate. They didn’t chase at two-strike junk pitches and they all had a specific approach at the plate. Every hitter I faced was a tough out.
PBR: How can participating in the Future Games help you in the future? The Future Games is going to help me in the future because it got my name out there and I got to throw in front of my dream schools.

|
Cole Taylor RHP / 3B / Tabor Academy, MA / 2024
PBR: What were your Future Games highlights? I was only able to pitch two innings during the Future Games so my highlight was being on the mound knowing the best players in my area are behind me ready to make plays.
PBR: Assess your performance. I had a bit of a slow start because of nerves but I settled in and was able to finish off well.
PBR: Give your thoughts on being part of Team Massachusetts and what stood out. I loved being a part of Team Massachusetts because the state is quite small so I was able to make connections with the other players through travel ball and other mutual friends. The bond definitely stood out for me. I pitched the first day and everybody was up and on the fence ready to go play together.
PBR: Touch on the competition you faced at the event. Team Mid-Atlantic was the team I pitched against and they were a very good team and knew how to play the game of baseball. Everybody there was a good player with high projection.
PBR: How can participating in the Future Games help you in the future? The Future Games definitely gets your name out there through social media and the amount of college scouts there.
PBR: What, if any, college coaches did you talk to at the event or hear from since the event ended? I have not received any more interest since the Future Games from any new schools.

PBR: Give your thoughts on being part of Team Massachusetts and what stood out. It was a true honor to represent my state as I played alongside some of the best pitchers and hitters in the state as well.
PBR: Touch on the competition you faced at the event. The competition was insane, definitely some of the best I’ve ever been around. Every batter had an A grade approach at the plate and every pitcher had high velocity and great off-speeds.

PBR: Assess your performance. I felt I played great, especially against the competition we had. I was 2-for-6 with a walk at the plate and behind the plate I played great as well, blocking balls in the dirt and framing balls well.
PBR: Give your thoughts on being part of Team Massachusetts and what stood out. Being a part of Team Massachusetts was amazing. I was out there with the best players from around the state, some of whom I had played with before. What stood out to me was the instant chemistry.
