2019 Future Games Preview - Team Michigan
One of Prep Baseball Report’s premier events has a new home in 2019.
The eighth annual Future Games, held previously at Grand Park north of Indianapolis, will now be held at LakePoint in Cartersville, Ga. on July 31-Aug. 3. Top uncommitted prospects in the classes of 2021, 2022 and 2023 will participate in one of the most popular events each year.
There will be 28 teams, including Team Michigan, with players representing 38 states plus the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec. Each team will play three games the final three days of the event after all position players are put through a showcase workout on Wednesday, the first day of the Future Games.
Michigan will open against Canada at 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, with Pennsylvania Friday’s opponent for Michigan at 9 a.m. before Michigan closes out versus Ohio at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday.
More than 200 colleges from across the country will be looking on as approximately 500 players participate in this year’s event. In 2018, a record 253 college and professional coaches and scouts were in attendance, six more than the previous season and around 100 more than the year prior.
“The Future Games is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be seen by over 250-plus college coaches at one time,” Michigan Director of Scouting Aaron Wilson said.
Gavin Ganun and Xander Morris are the lone returnees on this year’s Team Michigan.
“Each time I arrive to the Future Games it sends a chill down my spine, as the atmosphere is unlike no other,” Wilson continued. “Players are given the opportunity to play in front of the country's top talent as well as form relationships with players from different regions. I’m really looking forward to the 2019 Future Games.”
While only two of the 26 players on last year’s Team Michigan back, a dozen of those not returning have made a college commitment. Auburn, Stanford, Eastern Michigan, South Alabama, Michigan, Michigan State, Central Michigan and Butler all have commitments from 2018 Team Michigan players.
Aaron Downs of Pella High School in Iowa was last year’s MVP. Mac Horvath of Rochester Century High School was the 2017 most valuable player with Dillon Lifrieri of Wilton High School in Connecticut the 2016 award winner.
Sam Carlson of Burnsville, Minn. was the 2015 MVP, while Duncan Pence of Farragut High School in Tennessee won in 2014, Nolan Watson of Lawrence North in Indiana in 2013, Colby Fitch of Hickman, Mo. in 2012 and Ryne Roper of Harrisburg, Ill. in 2011.
“The Future Games has been a huge piece of the recruiting process of several ball players from Michigan and other participating states,” Wilson said. “The lucky gentlemen that are selected are able to compete against some of the country's best in front of 200-plus coaches. In my time with PBR, I've seen guys go from no offers entering the Future Games to leaving with a grocery bag full of offers.”
Following is a look at Team Michigan and the thoughts of each player that gave their views heading into the Future Games.

JT Sokolove SS / 2B / Hudsonville, MI / 2021
PBR: Give a short report on your spring baseball season and what you have done this summer. Sokolova: High school ball with Hudsonville in the spring was fun but a quick run when we lost in Pre-Districts. Hudsonville is a very competitive baseball school with usually 80-95 kids trying out for three teams on a yearly basis. Being a returning varsity middle infielder as a sophomore and playing SS is an honor for the continued program’s strength year after year. I play in a very baseball-rich environment in the OK Red Conference. Summer ball for Diamonds Baseball out of Grand Rapids, we have played in five very competitive 17U tournaments and have made deep runs in all of them. Our team has gelled for the last two seasons with strong development , and a team that wants to be together and compete game in and out. I have hit at the top of the lineup the last two seasons. I like to get our lineup as many looks at the pitcher as possible being a tough at-bat all the time. I love playing SS, and also don’t mind if people sleep on me because of my size. I consider myself to be a grinder and love playing the game, but love to train just as much.
PBR: What are your thoughts about being part of Team Michigan for the Future Games? Sokolova: Being a part of Team Michigan is very exciting because you get to show your talent off to the rest of the country as well as the others on your team. Most of the guys on the team you will know because you have either played against them in the past or followed them because of their passion for baseball. The opportunity to be able to team up with them and hopefully put it all together and compete is very exciting.
PBR: What are your expectations for the event? Sokolova: I expect there to be many people at this event that all have the same goal, to get better and show everyone what they got to bring to the table. I also expect there to be a lot of competition between other states at the event and hopefully some bragging rights - all in fun - on the line.
PBR: What PBR events have you participated in prior to the Future Games? Sokolova: I have gone to a handful of PBR events including the Diamonds Sports Training Day Showcase day for a couple of years now. I was also at the Top Prospect Games recently at Eastern Michigan.
PBR: What colleges have you heard from and considering attending? Sokolova: I have heard from several MAC schools, Xavier, and other smaller Division I and II schools within the midwest. I’m looking to study Exercise Science or Kinesiology depending on the schools that offer the program. I’m looking for a program to help develop me into a man as much as they are looking to make me a better baseball player.
