Archbishop Spalding defends the MIAA A title

Senior Jordan Carr gave up one hit after the first inning leading Archbishop Spalding to the 4-1 victory and claiming the MIAA A title for the second year in a row.

In the first, it did not look like things were going to go so smoothly for the left handed UNC-Asheville commit.  After Jack Finn reached to start the game on a swinging bunt down the third base line, Calvert hall senior Alex Kriss laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to first and made it to the bag before any Spalding player could make it to give Calvert Hall two on and no out.  Jeff Jones would then get a base hit to center field scoring Finn giving Calvert Hall an early 1-0 lead with runners one first and second.  Carr would bear down and get a strikeout and then a double play on a ground ball to second baseman David Harding to end the inning and get out of the jam. 

Spalding couldn’t muster any offense off Calvert Hall starter Brad Weber through the first three innings.  The junior right hander would only give up two hits through three innings. 

The game was then halted for a forty minute rain-delay and Spalding would take advantage immediately.  In the home half of the fourth, Nick Vermillion hit the first pitch he saw to deep left field over the outfielders head to start the inning with a leadoff double.  Two pitches later, Billy Godrick tied the game on a single to right field.  Godrick would advance to second on a ground out and then would come around to score after a Calvert Hall muffed ground ball and throwing error.

Spalding would add a run in the fifth inning scoring on a wild pitch, and added another run off a Calvert Hall error in the sixth inning to make the score 4-1.

That was all Carr would need, as the left-handed pitcher kept the Cardinal offense at bay the rest of the game to the tune of one hit after the first, using his big breaking ball early in the counts and finishing with his fastball and cutter. Carr was able to keep the Calvert Hall line up off balance the rest of the way and lead the Cavaliers to the win.  His final stat line was seven innings pitched, four hits, six strikeouts, and one earned run.

The Cavalier offense was led by Lavale Hodges, who went 2-for-2 with two walks, a run scored, and a stolen base. Calvert Hall was led by Jones who had a hit and an RBI.
