On March 27, the PBR Illinois team hosted its annual Underclass Invitational showcase, bringing together a collection of the state’s best freshmen and sophomores in one place, The MAX in McCook, Ill.

We began our post-event breakdown in the days that followed this event, detailing the prospects who exited the event with their prospect arrows pointed way up inside of this Quick Hits post, as well as the traditional stats leaders inside the Statistical Analysis.

Today, we’re continuing our position-by-position analysis by publishing the scouting reports on each of the infielders who made it out to this event. We began our positional breakdowns this week, analyzing our catchers and outfielders.

The primary takeaway with this group of infielders, as it compares to the previously published catchers and outfielders, is that basically every underclassman on this list is uncommitted. We ranked the top-12 and top-5 Class of 2023 and 2024 prospects at this loaded, select event, and each member of those lists is still on the market.

Sophomore Cal Sefcik (Marist, 2023) has greatly impressed on a handful of occasions, both at showcases and in live game action, and he takes the top spot among the ‘23s below. He has an exciting combination of athleticism, speed, and actions, with a right-handed bat that works both gaps with impact of the barrel, and he also operates either spot on the left side of the infield with soft hands, paired with 6.90 speed and arm strength.

Left-handed-hitting infielders Ryan Niedzwiedz (West Aurora, 2023) and Adam Schilz (Warren Township, 2023) took two of the top rounds of batting practice from their side of the plate. Niedzwiedz swings a quick, short barrel-feel bat that impacts the baseball at a high rate on the barrel. Schilz’s loose lefty swing gets to some of the best exit velocity among his peers, and with ease, as his best skill.

Among the freshmen, Eric DeCosta (Wheaton Warrenville South, 2024) made the absolute most of his PBR event debut. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound freshman took one of the day’s top rounds of BP, regardless of class, with a loose and easy swing that lined up hard contact on the barrel repeatedly, and his size took care of the rest. He averaged an exit speed of 90.1 mph and reached a 95.0 max, and his furthest batted-ball traveled 330 feet, estimated. Fellow freshman Cooper Malamazian (Nazareth Academy, 2024) took a silky smooth round of infield defense from a projectable, lean 5-foot-11 frame, and his quiet/simple right-handed swing similarly projects.
