IL/WI Underclass Games: Infielder Analysis

By Illinois & Wisconsin Staffs

On July 21, the PBR Wisconsin and PBR Illinois staffs teamed up to host this annual invite-only showcase for both states’ up-and-coming sophomores: Underclass Games. This year, the top 2023s from the two states met at Ozinga Field in Crestwood, Ill., to participate in a showcase workout and simulated gameplay.

We previously published highlights from the day inside our Takeaways post. On Monday, we began to break down this event, position by position, starting with the event’s catchers and outfielders, and we’re continuing with the showcase’s infielders today.

We were fortunate enough to view SS Ryan Jefferson (Providence Catholic, IL, 2023), an Illinois commit, multiple times this summer and fall, and he produced one of the day’s most stand-out performances here. He came away as the top-ranked middle infielder with exceptional up-the-middle defense and a loose left-handed bat. Jefferson has asserted himself as one of the state’s, and Midwest’s, top shortstops in this sophomore class.

From Civic Memorial, SS Bryer Arview (IL; 2023) is a follow sophomore for his gap-to-gap left-handed bat coupled with his natural actions and toolset that complements his chances of sticking to shortstop.

Wisconsin’s SS/2B Ethan Hindle (Arrowhead) demonstrated some especially easy and athletic actions here, with a loose, easy right-handed swing. His quick, athletic hands help him barrel contact to all fields, and he defends with bounce and confidence. Hindle recently debuted in the top-15 on PBR Wisconsin’s initial 2023 rankings.

This group features some of the best infield talent in both states’ sophomore classes. Read up on the scouting reports on the three prospects above, as well as the rest of the infielders invited to this showcase. We separated this group below by a top-10 middle and a top-five corner infielder rankings.
