2024 Prep Baseball Illinois Second Team All-State

By: Illinois Staff

Just yesterday, the Prep Baseball Illinois team released its First-Team All-State honors for the 2024 IHSA season. Today, we’re announcing the recipients of our Second-Team All-State honors. Given the amount of talent residing in the state, the Second-Team roster is stacked with selections representing all corners of Illinois.

Keep an eye out tomorrow when we release our Third-Team All-State.

But for now, and without further ado, here is the roster for the 2024 PBR Illinois’ Second-Team All-State.

PITCHERS

Austin Musso RHP / Mascoutah, IL / 2025

POS IP W/L H K BB ER ERA WHIP
RHP  61 10-2 36 96 28 6 0.69 1.05

From 4/29/24: “Kansas commit, ranked No. 10 overall in the state’s 2025 class. 6-foot-2, 195-pound strong, well-proportioned athlete with present strength throughout and room for more. Have seen him multiple times this spring and this was our best look to date in a highly anticipated Mississippi Valley Conference matchup against Triad. Tossed a complete game shutout, allowing two weak infield hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Has a 0.41 ERA with 49 strikeouts and 15 walks over 34 innings pitched this spring, holding opponents to a .136 batting average against. Works with tempo and pace, gets onto his backside and rides the slide to footstrike. Clean, in-line mover down the mound, consistently maintained his direction to the plate throughout. Long arm swing with scap retraction on the backside, accelerates out front and finishes out of a fast high ¾ arm slot. Fastball touched 91 early, pitched at 88-90 mph with true command of the plate, spotting it on either corner when he wanted. High spin with easy life and jump out the hand, holds plane with carry. Tight spin on slider, works it to right-handed hitters for swing-and-miss on occasion to the glove-side corner of the plate, 77-80 mph. Will also flip in a high arching, gradually spun curveball at 69-73 mph with big depth for strikes. High pitchability arm that consistently dominantes each time he takes the mound.”

Henry Brummel RHP / Pontiac, IL / 2024

POS IP W/L H K BB ER ERA
RHP  44.2 4-2 13 103 18 4 0.63

From 4/22/24: “Indiana commit. Currently ranked No. 15 in Illinois’ 2024 class and No. 414 nationally. Listed at 6-foot-4, 200-pounds with strength and athleticism throughout. Started on the mound for the Indians and threw 6.2 innings with 16 strikeouts, three walks, one unearned run and three hits allowed. Showed a high motor with competitiveness on the mound and worked with a quality pace throughout the game. Simple delivery into balance point, medium leg lift with tuck and coil, tall and fall delivery down the mound, works in-line, toe consistently lands in-line with the plate. Clean and loose arm path with clear acceleration out front, ¾ slot. Fastball sat 90-92 mph early on, touching 93 mph multiple times, but settled in at 89-92 mph throughout the game with clear life through the zone. Mixed in two separate breaking balls; a curveball that sat 77-78 mph with 11/5 break, showing sharp, vertical actions that dropped in the zone, and a slider that sat 79-82 mph with hard, sweeping shape, created multiple check-swings and some swing-and-miss. Rounded out his four-pitch mix with a changeup that sat 82-84 mph with slight fade to the arm-side. An impressive performance from the senior against a talented Monticello lineup.”

Joshua Caccia RHP / St. Charles North , IL / 2024

POS IP W/L H K BB ER ERA WHIP
RHP  73 10-0 36 104 10 11 1.04 0.64

From 3/4/24: “Headlining the St. Charles North pitching staff will be their returning ace in RHP Josh Caccia (2024; Elgin CC commit), who was also All-Conference in 2023. Caccia is currently ranked No. 126 in the state and when we last saw him he was pounding the zone with a fastball in the mid 80’s (T86.5) that played with sink, and we could see a tick up in his velo this spring.”

Brandon Shannon RHP / McHenry, IL / 2025

POS IP W/L H K BB ER ERA WHIP
RHP  60.1 10-0 43 82 27 16 1.86 1.16

From 4/22/24: “Uncommitted, currently ranked No. 35 in the state. Got the start for the Warriors and showed upside throughout his outing. Listed at a projectable 6-foot-3, 160-pounds, Shannon is an athletic mover down the mound. He works with a quick, compact arm action, releasing the ball from a high ¾ slot. He pounded the zone throughout his outing (65% strikes), and had confidence in all three of his offerings. His fastball sat 84-87, touching 88 in the first inning with some sink to it. He went to a 75-79 mph breaking ball with 11/5 shape for consistent swings and misses, while also going to an 80-82 mph splitter with sharp downer action to round out his arsenal. Shannon finished the day with seven strikeouts over his six innings of work and will be a junior arm to continue to keep tabs on this spring.”

Franklin Kirchner LHP / Conant, IL / 2025

POS IP W/L H K BB ER ERA WHIP
LHP  65.2 10-1 52 82 22 17 1.81 1.13

From 2/04/24: “LHP Franklin Kirchner (Conant, 2025) emerged as a left-hander to know moving forward. Listed at a projectable 6-foot, 165-pounds, Kirchner displayed a smooth and controlled delivery throughout his ‘pen to pair with a loose arm and ¾ release. His fastball cruised around 80-81 mph with some carry through the zone and horizontal action. He showed confidence in a 73-74 mph changeup, landing it for strikes with heavy running action (T18.3”). His final offering was a 70-71 mph slider, spinning around 2200 RPM with gradual 2/8 shape.”

Chase Milburn RHP / Edwardsville , IL / 2026

POS IP W/L H K BB ER ERA WHIP
RHP  61.1 10-0 37 54 19 5 0.57 0.91

From 4/16/24: “Physical 6-foot-2, 195-pound frame that holds strength throughout and still has room for more. Came in relief for the Tigers and tossed a pair of scoreless innings to notch the save; gave up a leadoff single and retired the next six batters in order. Simple, in-line mover, crouched at balance point, strong glove side and stays closed to front footstrike. Finishes onto a firm lead leg, repeats. Short compact arm stroke, high ¾ finish. Fastball comes out clean, sat 83-85, touching 86 mph multiple times, strikes. Advanced confidence and feel for a slider with tight spin and some sweep at 77-79 mph. Turned to it often, able to land it for strikes and tunnel it out of the strike zone for whiffs. A polished arm with spin feel that’s a name-to-know in the sophomore class.”

CATCHER

Jimmy Janicki C / Downers Grove North, IL / 2024

POS AVE 2B 3B HR RBI R K OBP SLG F%
C .410 9 3 7 42 26 12 .481 .718 0.981

From 2/15/24: “Janicki burst on the scene his sophomore season as the starting catcher for Downers Grove North and earned an invitation to the PBR Future Games that summer. He eventually committed to Troy University and has continued to trend upwards ever since. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound two-sport athlete played linebacker on the football team this fall and helped lead his squad to a runner-up 7A finish. At the Super 60, the right/right catcher continued to show a polished all-around game that we have become accustomed to seeing. Every tool continues to tick up for the talented backstop, who improved in every statistical category; 6.97 60, 84 mph from the crouch, 1.87-1.95 pop times and a max exit velocity of 104 mph. He was all over the barrel with authority throughout his round, averaging 97.2 mph off the bat with a number of his swings coming in at 100+. He also averaged the fourth best average bat speed at 77.9 mph, as well as the fifth best average hand speed of the event at 24.2 mph. What makes the numbers more impressive is how balanced, short to the ball and easy Janicki swings the bat. It's a direct path that results in hard backspin contact and he uses the whole field. Defensively, he is a steady receiver with clean, repeatable actions and a big arm that plays consistently around the bag. One of the top prospects in the state should be a close follow for scouts this”

FIRST BASEMAN

Ethan Borggren 1B / Lane Tech College Prep, IL / 2024

POS AVE 2B 3B HR RBI R OBP SLG OPS
1B .400 12 1 11 29 35 .504 .812 1.316

From 3/20/24: Northwestern commit. On the week, Borggren went 5-for-12 (.417) with a home run, triple, two doubles, four RBIs, six runs scored, three walks and a stolen base. His best game of the week came against No. 21 St. Rita where he went 2-for-3 with a home run, triple, two RBIs, three runs scored and a walk. He also threw 1 ⅓ innings, struck out one and allowed one hit to earn the save. He also threw 1 ⅔ innings in their win over No. 17 Mt. Carmel, striking out three and earning the save. He left 5-of-5 inherited runners stranded in both save opportunities.”

MIDDLE INFIELDERS

Cooper Malamazian SS / Nazareth Academy, IL / 2024

POS AVE 2B 3B HR RBI R OBP SLG OPS SB
SS .396 9 2 5 32 45 .493 .632 1.125 18

From 5/10/24: “Indiana signee. Currently ranked No. 6 in the state, No. 156 nationally; started at shortstop and batted second. A physical and athletic 6-foot-1, 187-pounds, Malamazian had a strong showing on both sides of the ball on Friday. Defensively, he continues to impress with his range up the middle, showing the ability to make plays to both his left and his right. His arm plays easy and strong across the diamond, which should allow him to stick on the left-side of the infield at the next level. Offensively, the right-handed hitter has a hitterish look about him in the box with a short and simple stride. His hands work direct to the ball with a compact, level swing that was on the barrel a couple times throughout the game. Malamazian finished the day 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. He also hopped on the bump to close the game out, earning the save, and running his fastball in the 88-91 mph range.”

Tyler Bell SS / Lincoln-Way East, IL / 2024

POS AVE 2B HR RBI R BB OBP F% SB
SS .400 8 4 25 45 32 .594 0.98 30

From 3/08/24: “There may not be a more well-known name in the state currently than SS Tyler Bell (2024; Kentucky commit). Bell put together a strong 2023 season as a junior, slashing .446/.577/.843, good for an eye-opening 1.420 OPS while also belting nine homers, driving in 46 and swiping 32 bags. The switch-hitter has seen his draft stock rise tremendously over the recent months thanks in part to stellar showings at the inaugural Prep Baseball All-American Game and most recently at the Super 60 where he earned high praise from Prep Baseball’s VP of Scouting, Shooter Hunt: ‘Although Bell’s performance in Chicago was hardly as earth shattering as what he did at the All-American game in Milwaukee, it is for that very reason that it might have been even more important in the eyes of the more than 100 MLB scouts in attendance. Noticeably stronger at nearly 6-foot-2, 192-pounds, the switch-hitting shortstop posted the two highest average bat speeds, per Blast Motion, at the event even without the effort-driven violent outputs. Those quick hands worked the barrel uphill with a compact stroke that delivered length in the zone with his patented quiet-intensity throughout. Reassuring was the look in the box, and even his takes dripped with confidence and supreme balance. Maxing out at an exit velocity of 101.1 mph with a max distance of 378 feet, he was on the barrel for the majority from both sides. Whereas the right-handed side has been thought of as a notch below the left, this look continued an upward trend with a less pronounced late lift of the hands prior to the approach, but still with the usual ability to get quality use of the hips. A gifted athlete, Bell posted a 6.84 60-yard dash time on what felt like a slower track, and was one of the top jumpers in terms of height at 34.8. On the infield, he moved gracefully with fluid footwork and transfers along with a stronger arm across the diamond at 90 mph. Already a high profile prospect, Bell’s performance did nothing to dissuade that. Perhaps most notable in this look was the fact that the Illinois native has graduated from the idea of ‘wanting to be the best’ to ‘expecting to be the best’ in the best sense of the phrase. In looking ahead to the spring, Bell has placed himself firmly in the early Day One discussion with the likes of shortstops Wyatt Sanford (TX), Carter Johnson (AL), and Charlie Bates (CA).’”

Nate Stempowski SS / Geneva , IL / 2024

POS AVE 2B 3B HR RBI R BB OBP SLG SB
MIF .435 14 2 3 42 42 23 .527 .728 18

From 3/26/24: “The Geneva Vikings are off to a 2-0 start, and SS Nate Stempowski (2024; McHenry County commit) has been a driving force in their success, finishing this past week at a 7-for-8 clip with a home run, triple, three doubles and seven RBIs. For his stellar performance, Stempowski has been named this week’s Player of the Week. Tuesday, March 19th was arguably the highlight of Stempowski’s week, as he hit for the cycle in an 18-3 win over South Elgin that only lasted four innings. His first at-bat of the game was a solo home run, followed by a two RBI double, then an RBI triple, capped off with a two RBI single - totaling six RBIs on the day.“

THIRD BASEMAN

Landon Mensik / Lincoln-Way Central , IL / 2024

POS AVE 2B 3B HR RBI R SB
3B .470 14 1 7 33 37 31

From 5/06/24: “Xavier signee. Currently ranked No. 30 in the state and standing at 6-foot-2, 185-pounds with present strength throughout the frame. Started at third base and batted in the three-spot for the Knights. Mensik looks the part both on defense and with the bat. Defensively, he made the routine play consistently while showing easy movements to both his left and right. His arm plays true from the hot corner, with easy accuracy across the infield. A right-handed hitter, Mensik has a quiet confidence about him in the box with some rhythm in the hands pre-pitch. He starts with a simple load, before swinging with a slightly uphill path with hands that work direct to the ball; producing consistent hard contact throughout the game. Mensik finished the game 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, two runs scored, and a stolen base”

OUTFIELDERS

POS AVE 2B 3B HR RBI R K OBP SLG SB
OF .553 12 3 4 24 53 5 .641 .872 28

From 5/01/24: “Uncommitted. Maciejewski was mentioned within the Week 3 Diamond Notes after an impressive week. He’s at it again, going 13-for-22 with one home run, one triple, three doubles, eight RBIs, 14 runs scored, three stolen bases and one walk. In their 9-8 win over Bremen, he went 4-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored. His most impressive performance came in their 14-3 win over Morgan Park, going 3-for-4 with a home run, triple, four RBIs and four runs scored. He also started on the mound in the game and threw four innings, struck out five, walked three, allowed one run and three hits.”

OF .420 15 4 6 40 51 25 .517 .769 1.286

From 4/11/24: “Tennessee commit. The No. 1 ranked 2027 in Illinois and No. 18th ranked Nationally proved to have the tools to play at the varsity level as a freshman. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound left handed hitting outfield was slotted in second in the lineup. Setup in a slightly open, balanced stance with some pre-pitch hand movement, hands work short and direct to the baseball with the ability to drive the ball to all fields. Wilson took quality at-bats making contact on every swing. Drew a five pitch walk during his first at-bat and made a hard line out to the right fielder on a 0-0 count during his final at bat. On the defensive side, Wilson was able to display his arm strength by taking a ball from the right center fence to third on a one hop throw.”

OF .522 10 5 5 25 40 22 .612 .825 1.455 43

From 9/23/23: “OF Khamaree Thomas (Kenwood, 2024; Michigan State recruit) is an athletic 5-foot-8, 160-pound spark-plug with above-average speed that translates in-game. A standout at the 2022 PBR Future Games and the past two Illinois State Games, Thomas is one of the top defensive outfielders in Illinois’ senior class. He glides around the outfield with ease, making balls hit to the gap look routine. Sneaky power at the plate, driving the ball to the left-center wall for a ground-rule double.”

Ryan Coon OF / Freeport, IL / 2024

POS AVE 2B 3B HR RBI R BB OBP SLG SB
OF .545 15 3 2 36 57 31 .654 .786 54

From 4/17/24: “Augustana commit. Coon went 10-for-16 with three doubles, a triple, a home run, four walks, eight RBI, nine runs scored, and six stolen bases. It is also worth mentioning that Coon now has 106 stolen bases in his career for Freeport. Coon also got it done on the mound vs Rockford Auburn he tossed three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, while punching out eight.”

Quinn Boyer OF / Montini Catholic, IL / 2024

POS AVE 2B 3B HR RBI R OBP SLG OPS
OF .514 8 2 6 35 38 .601 .784 1.385

From 12/08/23: “Boyer stands in at 6-foot-2, 183-pounds with some strength throughout his frame. The right-handed hitter has a simple, short stroke that creates some jump off the barrel, and you can expect his power to continue to trend upwards as he continues to develop physically. He has already proven himself against some of the top competition in the country, as he was named to the All-Area Code Games Team over the summer after going 6-for-9 in gameplay at the prestigious event. “

Listed at 5-foot-11, 175-pounds, Roberts has a loose and balanced swing, looking to keep the ball on a line with extension through the zone, reaching up to 97.9 mph for his max EV with impressive hand-speed (22.5 mph avg.) and bat-speed (75 mph avg.). He’s an above-average athlete, running to a 6.96 in the 60, easily translating to the infield where he has a quick first step with easy range to pair with steady hands. He displayed a strong arm across the diamond, topping out at 85 mph. His arm-strength easily translated over to the mound, where he displayed quality feel over his three-pitch mix.
