4/29/24

Kansas commit, ranked No. 10 overall in the state’s 2025 class. 6-foot-2, 195-pound strong, well-proportioned athlete with present strength throughout and room for more. Have seen him multiple times this spring and this was our best look to date in a highly anticipated Mississippi Valley Conference matchup against Triad. Tossed a complete game shutout, allowing two weak infield hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Has a 0.41 ERA with 49 strikeouts and 15 walks over 34 innings pitched this spring, holding opponents to a .136 batting average against. Works with tempo and pace, gets onto his backside and rides the slide to footstrike. Clean, in-line mover down the mound, consistently maintained his direction to the plate throughout. Long arm swing with scap retraction on the backside, accelerates out front and finishes out of a fast high ¾ arm slot. Fastball touched 91 early, pitched at 88-90 mph with true command of the plate, spotting it on either corner when he wanted. High spin with easy life and jump out the hand, holds plane with carry. Tight spin on slider, works it to right-handed hitters for swing-and-miss on occasion to the glove-side corner of the plate, 77-80 mph. Will also flip in a high arching, gradually spun curveball at 69-73 mph with big depth for strikes. High pitchability arm that consistently dominantes each time he takes the mound.

4/15/24

Kansas commit and one of the top arms in the state’s junior class. Strong, athletic 6-foot-2, 195-pound well-proportioned frame that has present physicality and room to add more. Started on the mound for the Indians in a conference win over Highland, punching out eight over 5 ⅔ innings of work with four hits allowed and three walks. Pace and tempo on the mound, controlled throughout. Gets onto his backside and rides it downhill, stays connected to the rubber, finishes through a firm lead leg. Strong glove side that stays closed consistently. Still head, throws with intent. Arm plays with some length on the backside, finishes from an athletic high ¾ slot. Fastball held 87-89 mph in a 109 pitch outing, carry up in the zone. Did not work in the zone as often as he normally would, but did lock in when he needed to. Spun two differing breaking balls; a tighter, more laterally spun slider at 76-78 mph and a high-arching curveball at 70-71 mph with big depth. Showed more comfort and feel for a fading changeup at 79-81 mph to left-handed hitters, spotted it to the arm-side corner of the plate and threw it with conviction. Starter profile with four pitches that consistently performs each time he takes the mound.

3/20/24

Kansas commit and one of the top arms in the state’s junior class, ranked No. 11 overall in Illinois and No. 330th nationally. Strong, well-proportioned 6-foot-2, 195-pound broad-shouldered athlete that’s plenty capable of additional physical development. Struck out seven over four scoreless innings, walking two while scattering three hits. Simple in-line mover, still head throughout, plus repeat. Backside stays connected to the rubber through front footstrike, strong glove side, stable lead leg, balanced finish. Clean and continuous arm path that finishes out of a high ¾ slot with arm speed out front. Fastball touched 91 twice in the first inning, pitched anywhere from 88-90 mph as his outing went on. Comes out clean, played straight and on the corners consistently. Was mostly fastball the first time through the order, started to mix in both his breaking balls the second time through. Threw his slider at 76-78 mph, held fastball tunnel with late action at times, around the zone often. Flipped in a curveball for strikes at 67-71 mph served as a get-me-over with more arch and gradual action. Continues to throw well each time we see him in game and is building a resume as one of the more reliable arms in the state, regardless of class.

3/13/24

Kansas commit and one of the top arms in the state’s junior class, ranked No. 11 overall in Illinois and No. 330th nationally. Strong, well-proportioned 6-foot-2, 195-pound broad-shouldered athlete that’s plenty capable of additional physical development. Looked like his usual dominant self against the Rams, striking out six and surrendering only a hit in four innings of work. Checks several boxes from a movement perspective down the mound. Simple in-line mover, still head throughout, plus repeat. Backside stays connected to the rubber through front footstrike, strong glove side, stable lead leg, balanced finish. Clean and continuous arm path that finishes out of a high ¾ slot with arm speed out front. Fastball touched 93 mph on his third bullet of the game, held 88-92 mph throughout his outing. Commanded the corners, comfortable going to either side of the plate and able to put it where he wants to consistently. Flashed some carry and backspin feel up in the zone at times, played mostly straight. Spun two breaking balls in this look; a bendy, more gradual curveball at 69-71 mph that he flipped in for strikes and a more firm slider at 76-79 mph with tighter spin. Flashed a low-80s changeup with fade in warmups, didn’t turn to it in-game. A polished junior with a track record of high level in-game performance who’s stuff appears to be matching his pitchability at this stage of his high school career.

2/11/24
Arguably the day’s most polished ‘pen came from RHP Austin Musso (Mascoutah, IL, 2025; Kansas commit), something we’ve become accustomed to seeing out of the 6-foot-2, 195-pound right-hander. Musso’s high spin, carry fastball played up in the zone and on the corners at 90-92 mph in this look. He spun a tight slider with late tilt both for strikes and beneath the zone at 79-80 mph while showing a gradual, more arching curveball at 73-75 mph in the zone. Musso also threw a straight changeup at 83-84 mph that favored the arm-side corner of the plate to round out his mix. A high level competitor with a proven track record of in-game success, Musso has the potential to keep elevating his ceiling on the hill and is one of the top arms in the Illinois’ 2025 class.
8/01/23

PBR Future Games: Taking the mound twice at the Future Games, RHP Austin Musso (Mascoutah, 2025) hurled a pair of scoreless frames in total. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound right-hander lived inside the zone, something we’re used to seeing from him, and has a highly competitive, confident demeanor on the mound. Musso pitched at 86-88 mph with his fastball, touching 89 mph, and spun it at 2500+ RPM at peak, while working in both the upper and lower quadrants of the strike zone throughout. He also showed tight spin on a slider at 76-77 mph and was capable of landing it for strikes consistently. A strike-thrower who has gotten outs at a high rate each time we’ve seen him, Musso has established himself as a premier arm in the Illinois’ 2025 group.

4/03/23

6-foot-1, 180-pound well-proportioned athlete with plenty of physical projection to come. Started on the mound for Mascoutah in this contest against a strong Belleville West team. Hurled six no-hit innings, striking out eight. Allowed one baserunner to reach throughout his outing, issuing a walk in the bottom of the sixth. Works with pace and tempo on the mound, lead leg lifts to an upright posture at balance, tall/fall type mover downhill. Consistently finished in line and onto a firm front leg, tall through release. Clear competitive presence on the mound, challenged and trusted his stuff throughout, got ahead often. Short quick arm draw out the glove, finished from a clean high ¾ slot. Fastball touched 88 mph twice in the second inning, held 85-87 mph in a 90+ pitch outing. Flashed some life up in the zone, worked mostly on the corners with comfort going in-and-out to both handed hitters. Commanded it in the zone throughout. Landed a 70-71 mph curveball with depth and gradual action for strikes. Turned to a firm, tight, more laterally spun slider at 74-77 mph for whiffs, used it mostly to the glove-side corner of the plate. In 17 innings pitched this spring, across four starts, has struck out 31 batters and walked only five, failing to allow an earned run yet. Has the stuff, makeup, and mound presence to be a frontline arm now, and at the next level. Continues to show out as a high-follow arm in the state’s 2025 class.

3/15/23

Well-proportioned 6-foot-1, 180-pound frame with present strength and room to add more. Started on the mound for the Indians against Effingham on Wednesday night and dominated, punching out nine batters over four hitless innings, walking just one. Tempo’d throughout, worked downhill from balance point in a slight drop/drive pattern, level shoulders, athletic finish through release. Repeated in rhythm. Short arm draw with arm speed out front, worked from a clean high ¾ slot. Backspun fastball at 85-87 mph, stayed behind the seams and worked up in the zone, painting the corners on occasion. Comfortable challenging hitters with it, did so throughout his outing. Landed a curveball for strikes at 70-72 mph with depth and gradual action, used sparingly. A high follow prospect in the Illinois’ 2025 class.

8/06/22

6-foot-1, 175-pound, right-handed pitcher with a clean, compact arm and easy mid-80's fastball. Started on varsity as a freshman for Mascoutah, earning second-team all conference honors. Upside 2025 arm with plenty more velocity and stuff to come down the road.
