Summer Trials: Quick Hits (2021, 2022 Grads)

Jordon Banfield
Arizona Scouting Director

The Summer Trials took place on Sunday, May 20th at Sunrise Mountain HS in Peoria. The event featured prospects from the 2019-2022 classes and provided an opportunity to be evaluated by PBR and considered for future invite-only events like the 2020 Games2021 Games and 2019 Top Prospect Games in June. Today, we continue the event analysis with some Quick Hits on a few of the top performers in the 2021 and 2022 classes.

Complete video, data and pictures are already posted to players' individual profiles with scouting reports to follow in the coming weeks. As always contact [email protected] or direct message @PBRArizona on Twitter with any questions and/or information.

2021:

-OF Carson Baker (Liberty HS) stood out on offense with an advanced swing and some bat speed. He uses a slight hitch to gather and creates a very solid base. Takes aggressive swings looking to lift and pull with a slight uphill path. Improving 7.44 60-yard dash will be key to being able to stick in the outfield.

-IF Alan Islas (Arcadia HS) showed off an intriguing left-handed swing with a loose rhythm. The swing has natural loft and should project for some power as he develops physically.

-IF/RHP RJ Molina (Salpointe Catholic HS) has an intriguing toolset, turning in a 7.12 60-yard dash and running his fastball up to 81 mph on the mound. His left-handed swing is almost too short, with very little hand movement and a steep path, but he appears to be the type of athlete that will figure it out. Shows some feel for three pitches on the mound and solid arm strength for a freshman prospect.

-IF Tyvon Moore (Mountain Pointe HS) turned in the top 60-yard dash time of any underclassmen in attendance with a 7.00 and shows the type of athleticism that makes him an intriguing prospect. the swing path will continue to refine itself and with continued physical development we could be looking at an interesting 2B or OF prospect down the road.

-TJ Oster (Valley Christian HS) lists himself as a primary 2B as he plays on the same high school team as standout SS Vinnie LaGatta, but shows plenty of arm strength to play short or even center/right field. Likely the top freshman prospect in attendance, Oster stood out in nearly every category, positing a solid 7.07 60-yard dash, outstanding 87 mph outfield velocity and the type of quick-twitch athleticism that should make him a very strong follow moving forward.

-C/RHP Steven Stewart (Centennial HS) is still very thin, but is starting to show signs of making a physical jump, lowering his 60 time to 7.53, raising his catcher veto to 73 and hopping on the mound and touching 80 mph with his fastball. The frame remains very projectable at 6-foot, 135-pounds and should add considerable strength at some point as matures. The right-handed swing remains well behind the left-handed version.

-OF Mason Washington (Hamilton HS) has some crudeness to his game, but the combination of his 6-foot-1 frame and athleticism (7.19 60-yard dash) make him an interesting follow.

2022:

-IF Mason White (Salpointe Catholic HS) has a left-handed swing that stands out immediately. He shows a very advanced rhythm with the type of looseness in his wrists that could develop into an elite offensive player as he continues to develop.

-1B Sam Christansen (Mountain View HS) is starting to make a physical jump, improving significantly in every category since we last saw him this winter, Christiansen stands out defensively at first base where he picked literally everything and is very comfortable moving around the bag.

-C Caleb Herd (Cinega HS) stands out defensively behind the plate where his 72 mph velocity and advanced receiving ability make him an intriguing young prospect. Herd also showed off an improved swing with some quickness in his wrists.

-SS Sean Jeffries (Gilbert HS) posted a very impressive 83 mph exit velocity, especially considering his long-limbs 5-foot-8, 115-pound frame.

-RHP Vincent Lorefice (Wickenburg HS) worked in the mid-70's on the mound with a big curveball that showed proper rotation and was consistently in the zone.

-RHP/1B Dillon Orr (Shadow Ridge HS) showed off the top fastball we've seen from any 2022 prospect in the state, touching 82 mph with a clean delivery. He also drove the baseball with authority and some looseness in his swing during his round of BP. The big-bodied freshman to be should end up being very physical down the line and is a very high-level follow.

-C Ryan Spier (Arcadia HS) looks like a high school player already. He drove the baseball to all fields, despite cutting off his swing some, showing off plenty of present strength. Spier is even more impressive on defense where he shows good flexibility and advanced receiving ability to go along with solid arm strength (73 mph C velo).
