Preseason All-State Games: Top Outfielders

The Preseason All-State Games is one of Arizona's most highly anticipated events on the PBR Arizona showcase calendar. The invitation-only event displayed prospects from 2020-2023 grad classes this year and was held on Jan. 26th, at Arizona State in Tempe, AZ. Over 75 players were represented.
As expected, this was a loaded event that yielded brand new prospects to keep an eye on as well as returning players that have started to establish themselves. We have released early analysis with our Quick Hits (Part 1), Quick Hits (Part 2), Statistical Analysis, and Positional Breakdowns.
Today, we are taking a look at the Top 5 Outfield prospects that attended the event. Strong position at the event with some speed and hit ability. There were outfield prospects across all the different grad classes. Here is a look at the top outfield prospects:
Enzo Apodaca OF / LHP / Chaparral, AZ / 2020Rankings StateRank: 26 / POS: 4
5-foot-9 170-pound build, uncommitted at time of the event, recently committed to Gonzaga. Although his size might have scared some D1 programs away, he packs a bigger punch than what it looks like. Apodaca has a medium compact frame with above average strength & athleticism. There is some fast twitch in his actions. Left-handed hitter whose bat really stood-out at the event. Hit the hardest ball of the day on a triple to CF. Displayed a short compact swing with body control. Consistent hard contact with pull approach at 94mph. Used a small leg lift to shift weight, riding back leg shortly into foot strike. Short load in his hands with a level path to the baseball. Solid runner in the OF, Ran a 6.97 60-yard dash. Easy actions and some quickness in the OF combined with a solid arm at 85mph. |
Quade Swearingen OF / 2B / Corona Del Sol, AZ / 2021Rankings StateRank: 18 / POS: 2
5-foot-10 190-pounds, strong physical athlete, broad shoulders, multi sport (QB1), some raw actions. Starts from an athletic squared base. Uses leg kick, landing in a good launch position where he started. Natural pop & strength through swing. Pull approach with consistent hard contact at 88ph. Capable corner outfielder that showed some speed. Ran a 7.02 60-yard dash. Average footwork, slowing feet down as he approaches the baseball- better in game. Short arm action with more in tank on 84mph throws. Should be a strong follow as he spends more time on the diamond. Has the strength & athleticism to make positive adjustments. Knows how to compete. |
Brandon Compton OF / LHP / Buckeye Union , AZ / 20225-foot-9 165-pounds, two-way player, balanced frame with projectability. Strength & maturity starting to come. Overall clean actions & high baseball IQ. Left-handed hitter with advanced approach. Starts from an athletic base with some weight on left leg, knees inside toes. Uses a small pick-up with minimal forward movement to generate leverage. Loads hands slightly back with some stoppage. Short level swing with middle approach. Hard contact at 87mph exit velocity. Showed ability to use LCF gap well. Capable corner OF, ran a 7.64 60-yard dash. More athletic than time shows. Used a side shuffle on throws to home with 82mph arm strength. Repeatable delivery on the mound, throwing strikes at 78-81mph combined with above average control on his average 12/6 CV. Going to be a player to monitor as he physically develops. Well rounded player. |
Eddie Montoya OF / RHP / Valley Vista, AZ / 20225-foot-10 165-pound, athletic body with long lean limbs. Left-handed swing and advanced approach stood out. Hits from a narrow upright stance, leaning slightly on the inside of the back leg. Uses leg lift, riding back leg into front foot strike. Swing was steep at times. Showed the ability to use the opposite side of the field well. Repeatable swing with some rhythm, LD contact. Better hitter than his 78mph exit velocity shows. Hit some balls hard in the games. Above average actions in OF. Ran a 7.25 60-yard dash. Long strides to baseball. Had some loft on his throws at 80mph. Going to be a left-handed hitting OF prospect to follow. |
Logan Olson OF / 2B / Valley Vista, AZ / 2020Rankings StateRank: 93 / POS: 17
6-foot 162-pounds, uncommitted, lean body with athleticism. Room to hold more strength. Hits from a wide athletic base with knees bent. Used slight front leg pick up for timing. Minimal transfer of weight through swing. Vertical barrel entry. Quick out of the zone, finishing low. Middle approach with slightly downward swing plane. 80mph exit velocity. Moves well in the OF with feel for the position, running a 6.88 60-yard dash. Uses a step behind with direction to create carry. Accurate arm, throwing over-top with 83mph arm strength. |
