Preseason All-State Games: Quick Hits (Part 2)
February 4, 2020
The Preseason All State Games took place on Sunday, January 26th at Phoenix Municipal Stadium in Tempe, AZ, home of the Arizona State Sun Devils. We began our post-event analysis earlier last week with our Statistical Analysis by taking a look at the top statistical performers in each category. National Crosschecker, Shooter Hunt also highlighted some of his first impression in his On the Hunt: Arizona Preseason All-State Edition. Before the weekend, we also took a look at some initial players that stood out in our Quick Hits: Part One. This annual invite only event featured some of the top 2020-2023 grads in the state of Arizona and has developed into a must attend event before spring coverage begins.
Today, we continue our analysis with an early look at some of the initial takeaways from the Preseason All State Games in Part Two of our Quick Hits.
Quick Hits (Part Two)
Gavin Muller RHP / OF / Desert Ridge, AZ / 2020Rankings StateRank: 115 / POS: 27
Uncommitted, 6-foot-1 175-pound RHP with proportional strength & athleticism. Stood out on the mound with his calm approach. Worked 84-87mph with FB with short OT arm action. Mixed in a loose 75mph 11/5 CV and 80mph CH. Pounded the strike zone. Shouldn’t be uncommitted for long as teams search for some extra pitching depth this spring. |
Jason Barres RHP / OF / Perry, AZ / 2020Rankings StateRank: 60 / POS: 12
5-foot-10 170-pound RHP, Chandler-Gilbert commit, displayed raw athleticism and natural arm strength. Pitched with short L3/4 arm action from raw delivery. FB sat 85-88mph with some heavy arm side run. Mixed in a slurvy breaking ball from a deceptive arm slot at 71-72mph. Going to be an interesting arm to follow. Ball jumps out of the hand with movement. |
Griffen Chewning SS / 2B / Notre Dame Prep, AZ / 2020Rankings StateRank: 32 / POS: 8
5-foot-11 175-pound, South Mountain CC Commit, athletic frame, switch hitting SS. Overall swagger and confidence in his game showed. LD hitter with some ability to drive baseball. Pull approach from left side, more middle approach from right side. Short easy footwork in the infield with some arm strength. Ran a 7.19 60-yard dash. |
Kole Klecker RHP / 3B / Hamilton, AZ / 20226-foot-1 175-pound, lean high-waisted body with long limbs. Some projectability to his frame. One of the last pitchers on the night but didn't disappoint. Easy arm action from H¾ slot. FB sat 80-82mph consistently with low effort. Developing feel for off-speed. CV had varying shape but showed glimpses of sharp 12/6 action at 69-71mph. Mixed in a firm SL. Development should be monitored. Chance to make jumps with added explosiveness.

Eddie Montoya OF / RHP / Valley Vista, AZ / 20225-foot-10 165-pound, athletic build, ran a 7.25 60 yard dash. Left handed swing and approach stood out. Showed the ability to use the opposite side of the field well. Easy repeatable swing with LD contact. Hit some balls hard in the games. Above average actions in OF. Going to be a LHH OF prospect to follow. |
Jimmy Williams OF / RHP / Cactus Shadows, AZ / 20226-foot-3 175-pound, two-way player. Looks more physical and body stands out. Sneaky athleticism, running a 7.14 60-yard dash. Hit a ball deep to LCF in game, reaching out for solid contact, 92mph exit velocity. Also had a solid day on the mound, working 80-83mph with his FB. Off-speed still developing. Should improve across the board as he learns to use and control his body. Solid follow into spring & summer. |
