The Year in Review: No. 7 4A State Tournament

The 4A state title game had all the make up for a great game. These two teams were familiar opponents, meeting in the 4A South Regional Tournament. Arkadelphia was the back-back state champions. Star City had never won a state title and both teams were loaded with some of the premiere 2016 talent in the state. It lived up to the hype going 9 innings with Star City winning the game 4-3 in the bottom of the 9th.
Arkadelphia scored first, scoring one run in the 2nd inning off of a 2015 INF/OF Cody Bethel double.
Star City answered in the third when 2016 MIF Blake Wynne and 2016 C Austin Powell hit back to back singles. Powell’s single drove home 2016 OF/INF Cole Muckleroy who reached on a walk. Wynn later scored on a passed ball to take a 2-1 lead.
Arkadelphia regained the lead in the 5th 2015 OF Brooks Burnham doubled in a run and later scored on 2015 MIF Clay Wilson’s single.
Star City tied the game in the bottom of the 5th when 2016 RHP/OF Garry Hill squeezed in Wynn, tying the game 3-3.
Pitching took over from their with 2016 RHP Garry Hill and 2016 RHP Ty Koster throwing shutout innings until the 9th.
In the 9th Hill was relieved by 2016 C/RHP Austin Powell due to AAA rules on pitching limits. Powell worked a clean 9th and picked up the win, when 2016 OF Ty Brown single to right field brought home the game winning run.
Both teams return a bevy of players in the 2016 seasons, notables include, 2016 Brandon Matros, Ouachita Baptist signee, 2016 Ty Koster Central Arkansas Signee, 2016 Cutter Jester Ouachita Baptist Signee and Danny Jo Spradlin Henderson State Signee for Arkadelphia. Star City returns 2016 MIF/RHP Blake Wynn, Arkansas State signee, 2016 OF/RHP Garry Hill Arkansas State Signee, Austin Powell 2016 C/RHP Arkansas State Signee and OF/MIF Cole Muckleroy Arkansas Monticello signee. Both teams return others that will be key if either team will have similar success in 2016.
