Okotoks Dawgs Scout Day: Underclass Quick Hits
April 1, 2023
On Tuesday, March 28th, PBR Canada's staff headed to Okotoks to host our first ever Scout Day with the Okotoks Dawgs. We had roughly 70 players on hand from the 2023 - 2028 classes with 18 committed players on hand, including eight of them at the Division I level.
Not only was their plenty of committed talent on hand, but there was a slew of high-end uncommitted players in the upperclass group as well as some intriguing underclassmen who will be on the scene for several years to come. With the event now completed and stats populated, we will now break down everything we saw at the event with defensive leaderboards, TrackMan hitting and pitching leaders and Quick Hits which will provide scouting notes and video on the standouts.
Our TrackMan was utilized throughout the event for batting practice metrics, as well as bullpens to gather advanced data on players. Beyond that, players ran through defensive evaluations with positional velocities and pop-times recorded.
Below, we conclude our post-event coverage with a final set of Quick Hits with a look at 10 underclassmen who caught our eye on Tuesday.

OKOTOKS DAWGS SCOUT DAY | UNDERCLASS QUICK HITS
Austin Collins RHP / OF / Okotoks Dawgs Academy, AB / 2025Uncommitted 2025 RHP Austin Collins may have been the biggest standout among the underclassmen at the event. Athletic look with a high-waisted frame at 5-foot-11, 160-pounds with plenty of strength to come. Live arm with a fastball that sat 87-87 T89.8 with armside run and late life. There’s feel for a tight breaking ball at 74-75 and flashed a good changeup at 74-75 with heavy horizontal break and fade. Our first look at Collins and it was an impressive one as he looks to be one of the better 2025 arms in the entire country.

William Labonte RHP / Okotoks Dawgs Academy, AB / 20262026 RHP William Labonte put together one of the best days among the freshman at the event. Already has some size and projectability at 6-foot, 170-pounds Pounded the strike zone throughout the bullpen and the fastball sat 84-85 T85.9. Featured a tight, high-spin breaking ball at 73-74 (2380 avg.) along with a changeup at 78-79 with good horizontal break (14.0in. avg). Everything looks clean on the mound and has three quality offerings. One of the better 2026s we’ve seen in Canada to-date.

Tyson Wedge RHP / SS / Okotoks Dawgs Academy, AB / 20252025 RHP/SS Tyson Wedge put together a good bullpen on Tuesday led by his fastball that sat 85-87mph with armside run. The 5-foot-10, 165-pounds right-hander worked with a high-spin slider at 76-77mph (2400+ avg.) with tight spin. Also has a changeup at 77-79 and the pitch is still developing. Intriguing arm to follow as he continues to develop on the mound.

Landon Kauffman OF / LHP / Okotoks Dawgs Academy, AB / 2025Rankings StateRank: 3 / POS: 1
Uncommitted 2025 OF/LHP Landon Kauffman was the top underclass two-way player at the event and flashed more upside on the positional/hitting side but there’s plenty to like on the mound from the lefty, as well. Lean, athletic frame at 5-foot-10, 175-pounds and the right-handed hitter put together a quality round of BP with consistent, hard line-drive contact. Peak exit velocity of 97.8mph and peak distance of 311ft. Also a left-handed pitcher with a fastball that sat 82-84mph and pairs it with a curveball and changeup. Good looking uncommitted 2025 who should be on the radar of college coaches.

Lucas St-Laurent RHP / 2B / cole Okotoks junior high school, AB / 2026This was our first look at 2026 RHP/SS Lucas St-Laurent since the fall and he’s really improved and matured during that time. Wiry frame with tons of room to gain strength at 5-foot-11, 150-pounds. Has gained 6mph on the fastball since September, now sitting 84-85 T85.9 and also flashed a slider with sweepy-action at 72-74mph, as well as a changeup at 80-81. Another impressive underclass arm out of Okotoks who you can put in the top tier of 2026s in Canada.
|
Alex Machej SS / RHP / Okotoks Dawgs Academy, AB / 20262026 SS/RHP Alex Machej put together a good day on both sides of the ball and catches your eye with a high-waisted, projectable frame at 6-foot-1, 160-pounds. Right-handed hitter line-drive, gap-to-gap approach right now but will be interesting to see how the bat develops as he adds strength. Found the barrel at a clip of 80%. There’s upside on the mound as well with a fastball that sat 79-81mph. Overall game is still raw but Machej will be one to follow over the next couple years as he develops and refines his game.
|
Thomas Chevrier OF / LHP / Okotoks Dawgs Academy, AB / 20262026 OF/LHP Thomas Chevrier was another 2026 from the Dawgs with some raw skills but flashed upside on both sides of the ball. 5-foot-11, 175-pounds left-handed hitter with a quiet, simple swing with a small leg-kick and hand at shoulder height. Peak exit velocity of 87.4mph and distance of 260ft. Also a left-handed pitcher with a fastball that sat 80-81mph, along with a slider at 69-71mph and changeup at 74-75mph.
|
Quincy Jenkins SS / 2B / Okotoks Dawgs Academy, AB / 20252025 SS Quincy Jenkins flashed some tools on Tuesday and it’s an athletic, projectable look at 6-foot, 160-pounds. The right-handed swing stands out with loose hands and wrists as well as bat speed. Generated a top exit velocity of 85.9mph and distance of 248ft. Moves well on the infield with confidence and quick, active feet. Arm was up to 78mph across the diamond with the ability to throw from multiple slots. Really interesting overall look and will only get better as he adds strength.
|
Taye Thierman C / RHP / Foothills Composite , AB / 20272027 C/RHP Taye Thierman impressed in multiple areas of the showcase and has advanced skills for his age. Lots to dream on with the size and body at 6-foot-2, 185-pounds and still just 14-years-old. Put together a good round behind the dish with quick actions and arm strength (74mph) leading to a 1.96 pop-time. Also a right-handed pitcher with plenty of upside on the mound and it’s a quick arm from a short slot and the fastball sat 80-81mph. Also worked with a curveball at 67-69 and changeup at 73-74mph. Was one of the youngest players at the showcase but fit right in with the older group.
|
Spencer Gordon 3B / RHP / Okotoks Dawgs Academy, BC / 2026This was our second look this year 2026 1B/RHP Spencer Gordon and he continues to stand out in his class with his strength and size from the right-side of the dish. 6-foot-2, 190-pounds with a compact swing and line-drive, middle of the field approach. The lower-half has looked far more active in his swing this year compared to last and it’s showing during his rounds of BP as he posted a top exit velocity of 94mph and peak distance of 299ft. One of the top performances among 2026 bats at the event.
