2019 Future Games Preview - Team Canada Positional Prospects
Catchers
Justin Jang C / 3B / Abbey Park, ON / 2021Rankings StateRank: 34 / POS: 5
Report: Jang really stood out behind the plate at our Future Game Trials as he had pop times between 1.87-2.00. He transfers well and there is more than enough arm strength and carry as the top velocity out the crouch is 81 mph. At the plate, Jang gets his hands in good position to hit, and there is whip and bat speed through the zone with hard contact. The arm is going to draw attention and if the offensive output is there like we saw in Florida, Jang should get his fair share of interest. |
Quinton McRae C / Eastdale, ON / 2021Rankings StateRank: 24 / POS: 3
Report: Strong, left-handed hitting catcher listed at 6-foot-1, 210-pounds with strong forearms and upper half strength, well proportioned and the frame profiles for the position. At the plate, McRae is aggressive and looks to go to his pull side where the majority of his power comes from. He’s begun to show more of a hit tool as of late but the power is very intriguing and his arm behind the dish has improved. Passes the eye test and could jump some balls during Wednesday’s workout and take that into game action. |
Tyson Gomm C / 2B / Port Credit, ON / 2021Rankings StateRank: 14 / POS: 1
Report: Gomm, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound left-handed hitting catcher with wiry strength to his frame. 2.03-2.12 pop-times, with 75 mph arm strength behind the plate, sound all-around defensive actions. At the plate, there’s bat speed and aggression towards the baseball, two-hand finish keeps him controlled and allows his line-drive approach with pull-side direction to work well. Just a sophomore in high school, the glove and arm are currently ahead of the bat, but in all bright future ahead for the left-handed hitting Gomm. |
Infielders
Mason Dobie SS / 2B / Georgian Bay Community, ON / 2021Rankings StateRank: 11 / POS: 3
Report: 6-foot-2, 175-pounds, slim frame, equally proportioned, projects to add some strength. Moves well at shortstop, feel for the position, clean actions, he stays down and gathers himself well, he will make the routine play. Quick release on throws, didn't see him gear up and let it loose, 76 mph arm strength on this day with more in the tank. Quiet swing with little movement in lower half, does not try to do too much, let's his hands work, stays through the zone, line-drive stroke, potential for pull-side power with physical development as there's bat speed with a smooth slightly uphill bat path. |
Nathaniel Ochoa SS / OF / Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School, ON / 2022Rankings OverallRank: 114 / POS: 27
Report: The youngest player in the infield, Ochoa passes the eye test at 6-foot-3 and 166-pounds with wide shoulders, lean frame that will carry more strength. Has made big strides this summer and the bat is starting to come along as Ochoa gets stronger and more coordinated while the hands and arm really play on the left side of the infield. The only 2022 on the team, Ochoa has big time upside and future games could be his coming out party. |
Elijha Hammill SS / 2B / Holy Trinity, ON / 2021Rankings StateRank: 4 / POS: 1
Report: Hammill, back for the 2nd time as he had a hammy issue early on at last years Future Games. Switch hitter who performs from both sides of the plate while letting his 6.6 speed play in game and on the bases. Has improved defensively with the hands as their is arm strength and feel to make plays. Bat is the carrying tool and should be a sparkplug at the future games. |
Emilien Pitre SS / Academie Baseball Canada, QC / 2020Report: Speedy middle infielder with twitchy actions at the plate from the left side. Has been a standout for ABC on their summer tour, always a threat with his speed as he’s been clocked down the line at 4.15. Defensively, actions and arm to stick at short, confident with his glove and plays under control, never being rushed while showing range to both sides and being able to come get the ball. Definite guy to be on. |
Outfielders
David Calabrese OF / St. Elizabeth CHS, ON / 2021Report: Calabrese is a left-handed hitting outfielder who flies and shows hit tool to all fields. The 5-foot-11, 160-pound prospect is quiet and compact at the plate, the swings gets on plane and stays through the zone, and very rarely do you see much swing and miss. Patrols the outfield and puts his speed to good use, showing ability to run down balls in the gaps and with enough arm to profile at centre or left-field. Definite can’t miss prospect. |
Tanner Almond OF / 1B / Georgian Bay Community, ON / 2021Rankings StateRank: 13 / POS: 4
Report: Almond, a left on left outfielder has really come into a zone this summer, profiling as a hit first outfielder with great reads defensively. The in game performance has been fantastic, and the offensive upside is there for Almond as the swing plays with some natural lift with the ability to hit the ball at the yard. Good chance for Almond to go off in Atlanta and make a presence on the National recruiting scene. |
Luis Pimentel Guerrero OF / SS / Corpus Christi, ON / 2022Report: Pimentel, the youngest outfielder on the roster is a switch hitter with twitch and speed being a big part of his game. He can throw with velocity in the upper 80’s and touching 90 from the outfield earlier in the year. Lots of room to grow and mature, Pimentel will hit with more of a contact, line drive oriented approach with a chance to wreak havoc on the bases with sub 7.00 speed. |
Owen Ellis OF / SS / TA Blakelock, ON / 2021Rankings StateRank: 9 / POS: 3
Report: Ellis is a hit first outfielder who works with gap to gap power from an athletic setup at the plate from the right side. Gets the barrel out front with loose hands and feel to hit. It’s an athletic frame at 6-foot, 187-pound frame with room to add strength. Ellis runs well with his best 60 time currently is 6.88 and will be a hitter with feel and bat speed to pay attention to next week in Georgia. |
Alexis Gravel OF / LHP / Academie Baseball Canada, QC / 2021Report: Gravel, product of the french-canadian powerhouse ABC Academie is a left-handed hitting outfielder with short swing to contact. More juice to his pull side and the body will add strength over time. He runs well and the arm works from the outfield with clean actions, has also jumped on the mound in the past but he has taken the next step this summer at the plate and will be an intriguing player to follow. |
Caden Shapiro OF / LHP / Upper Canada College, ON / 2021Rankings StateRank: 20 / POS: 5
Report: One of the two-way players on the roster, Shapiro is a strong defensive outfielder who tracks balls well and can be a leader in patrolling the outfield. At the plate, it’s more contact oriented and will use the whole field. The swing is loose and when he gets timed up, Shapiro will find barrel with bat to ball skills making him an interesting two-way prospect who can contribute in multiple ways. |
