McCalla quietly climbed in velo this past Spring/Summer, touching 90 mph with the FB. Been some inconsistency in his starts, but he'll look to put it all together and fill the ace role for the Mustangs this Spring. Houston will have deep roster that should push in the 4A West TN gauntlet district (vs Collierville, Arlington, & Bartlett), and McCalla will be a tone setter for that group.
9/16/18 - Max FB: 77, FB: 75-76, CB: 59-61, CH: 63-64 6-foot-1, 190-pound, RHP shows intriguing velocity for such a young arm. Medium, athletic frame w/ some present strength throughout. Advanced frame for a 2023, has just scratched the potential of his frame. Pitches from a full wind-up into H ¾ to OTT release from the middle of the rubber. Bit of a rock and fire type delivery w/ front hip leading the way. Clean, repeatable delivery. Quick arm, just scratching the surface of his velocity potential. Downhill plane. Straight FB shows occasional short cut. Big downer CB, slows arm down on it, best used as a get me over pitch. CH w/ short fade and sink, slows arm down. Needs to learn to throw off-speed stuff w/ same arm-speed as FB and trust the grip. Around the zone w/ 3-pitch mix, tools to command.
9/16/18 - 60 Time: 8.91, Position Velocity: IF-73, Exit Velocity: 78 6-foot-1, 190-pound, RHH showed some power in BP. Medium, athletic frame w/ some present strength throughout. Advanced frame for a 2023, has just scratched the potential of his frame. Offensively, hits w/ a slightly open, upright stance w/ short hand rhythm into knee to knee leg kick to square and occasional short load. Would benefit from consistent hand separation, tends to stay locked in w/ some stiffness through the zone. Generates bat speed through the zone. Projectable pull power as frame matures. Defensively, shows solid hands and footwork at 3B w/ projectable arm strength.
