An athletic strong frame at 5-foot-11, 200 pounds. Ran a 7.5 in the 60 yard dash. Offensively- The right handed hitter stands in the box with feet shoulder width apart. Slight bend in the knees. Uses a slight toe tap before attacking the hitting zone. Displayed a strong direct path to the baseball. Ball jumps off the bat.  Displayed consistent hard contact to the middle part of the field. Stays balanced throughout his swing and gets good extension after the point of contact. The top exit velocity was 92 MPH. Defensively- Sits back in a low stance. Presents a big target for the pitcher. Receives the ball slightly off center. Has a smooth quick transition and throws from a high ¾ arm slot. Quick-release. The top throwing velocity was 81 MPH. Pop time ranged from 2.07-2.14. The 2020 Catcher is a must follow.

Athletic 5-foot-11, 195 pounds C. Offensively- loads into the crouch position with a back toe-tap for timing. Stays balanced throughout the swing, explosive at the point of contact and balanced follow through with a high finish. Barrell stays flat through contact and shows gap to gap pop. Shows power potential with an exit velocity of 90 MPH. Defensively- Sits in an athletic stance and with a big target. Shoots right out of the stance with a quick transfer and strong accurate arm action to 2B. Had a catching velocity of 80 MPH and 1.94-2.01 pop time. The 2020 C has the body and physical tools to make an impact at the next level.

Well built, athletic, active footwork, still learning the catching position. Loose arm action 76 mph arm with a 2.07 pop-time. In the box, balanced stance, smooth level bat path, above average bat speed at 89 mph, solid contact with plus power potential. Doubled down the LF line in inning 1 @UE. Single to LF in 9th @ UE.

Preseason West (Feb. 19, 2018)

Stands a firm 5-foot-11, 185-pounds with a strong looking appearance. He ran a 7.56 60-yard dash showing improvement from the last event. At the plate, slightly crouched stance with shoulder width apart feet, on the pitch he slides his front foot back for timing, loading on his back side. Hands power forward, strong and compact to the ball, barrel plane is mostly level through contact with a high finish, exit velocity of 90 mph, up five-mph since last summer showing continued growth. Defensively, more of a prototypical build for the catching position, receives the ball soft with balance, footwork quick gaining ground, clean fast release from a high 3/4 slot, 75 mph arm-strength with a career best 1.95 pop-time on his best throw. Look for Juan to break out this summer.

NY Games (June 25-27, 2017)

Athletic footwork standing 5-foot-10, 175 pounds with a 60 time clocked at 7.89 that should improve. Offensively - brings bat through zone on a level plane, gets full extension for an extension velocity of 85 MPH; strong hands, effective load, repeatable motion; will add to power with lower body engagement and inner knee rotation.  Defensively - Sets up low and balanced, smooth and easy transfer but tends to come out of crouch to quickly, will improve POP Time (2.06-2.10) and accuracy with increased use of lower half.

Academic Games (June 3, 2017)

Sturdy 5-foot-10, 165-pound catcher with advanced physical tools. Offensively - Balanced, quiet feet, keeps hands back and uses inner knee rotation to generate power at the plate with an exit velocity of 82 MPH, gap power, comfortable driving to all fields, eager to see development from this player in the 2020 class.  Defensively - Sound footwork with a position velocity of 70 MPH, delivers with accuracy, shows basic blocking skills. Accuracy on bag could improve. Transfer and release are quick but could be more in sync. Pop times ranged from 2.00-2.09, will be a sub 2.0 in near future.

Preseason All-State (February 20, 2017)

Juan, an impressive 2020 right-handed hitting catcher stands at 5-foot-10 and weighs 165 pounds, ran a7.84 60. Offensively- Starts from a balanced square lower half, some slight bend in both knees, with the hands above the back shoulder and barrel of the bat moving from a parallel to and upright position during the pre-pitch phase. During batting practice showed the ability to work the ball from the pull side line to the opposite field line, using the entire field. Drove the ball particularly well to the opposite field gap, impressive for a young hitter.  Recorded an impressive exit velocity of 87 MPH on the day. Defensively-  Starts from a square balanced lower half, knees and shoulders angles down the first base line, with the weight mostly on the balls of the feet and toes. Received the ball with a quiet body, however, worked the glove from on top of and around the ball. Transfer, on throws to second base, is long and moves in a circular path from the back hip to the throwing shoulder. Throws showed good accuracy, however, more velocity and carry can be shown with a quicker and more efficient transfer which would help with creating more extension on the release. Recorded an arm velocity of 74 MPH and a respectable pop time of 2.03 for the 2020 graduate.
