Power / Speed Score
A simple calculation that divides the athlete’s Exit Velocity Max by the athlete’s 60 Yard Dash time for the given event year. For example, 98 MPH / 7.00s = 14.00.
Lean, athletic frame with projection left. Ran a 7.48 60 yard dash. Pitching – Worked exclusively out of the stretch with some cross action in throwing motion. Balanced leg lift with a controlled forward stride. Throwing arm gets long after hand break then shortens up into low ¾ release point. Funky arm action creates some deception. Rotational, upright finish. FB showed consistent sink and topped at 71 MPH while sitting mostly 67-70 MPH. Sweeping CB ranged between 61-63 MPH. CH sat 63 MPH. Everything he throws has some wiggle on it.
Stands 5-foot-10, 155-pounds with projection in the lean Build Hitchy Arm path that would benefit from a more fluid circle, ran a 7.33 60 yard dash. 73 mph throws from the OF, getting lower half more active will help increase the carry on his throws. Upright setup at the plate, compact strong hands, path is direct, 86 mph exit velo off a tee, slight toe tap. Finish is fluid.
May 2018
5-foot-10 right-hander with intriguing potential; On the mound he showed a clean arm action out of a ¾ slot, effectively changes eye level, fastball shows late run, induces weak contact, works both sides of the plate with accuracy, emerging command of secondary pitches. At the plate Stapleton stays short to the ball with repeatable motion and disciplined approach, uses all fields, makes consistent barrel contact.
Preseason - West (February 19, 2018)
Standing 5-foot-10, 155-pounds from an athletic slender build, more size projection in his future. At the plate, slightly open stance, strides on the pitch back to even, barrel path is mostly level through contact, full finish with an 81 mph exit velocity, more to come. Defensively, stays behind the ball, gets entire body through every throw, arm-action is straight back and high, would like to see more of a fluid arm-circle which will aid in his velocity improvements. Arm-strength was 79 mph. On the mound, easy tempo, drives hard off his back side, arm-action is back slightly long, long stride with an upright finish. Would benefit from a longer finish where his back is paralel to the ground. Fasball peaked 78 mph (up one last event), curveball has loose shape at times in the upper 60's.
WNY All-Star Games (September 24, 2017) Stapleton stands 5-foot-10, 155-pounds with a lean build, room for physical growth. He uses a short leg-lift to a quick stride towards home, average length to stride. Arm gets back towards 2B quick, long action. As his arm comes forward he collapses on his back leg, driving more firm off that leg with help keep his elbow and arm higher at release. The ball comes from a lower 3/4 slot. Fastball has late sink and run to both sides of the plate sitting mid-upper 70's. Curveball shows gradual shape topping out at 68 mph.
Campus Series-Oswego (August 15, 2017)
Stapleton stands 5-foot-10, 152-pounds with room for added weight. Offensively- Open stance, Stride to even, inside out with path, compact, some uphill tilt, short extension. Exit velocity was 78 MPH. Defensively- Stays through the ball, back arm-action, front arm extension with some carry to the throws, 75 MPH arm-strength. Pitching- Starts from the stretch, closed stance. Delivery is quick with little-to-no knee lift. Arm-action is back towards 2b and long, fastball sitting 73-74 from a mid ¾ slot, last fastball peaked at 76 MPH. Curveball range is 62-63 with side-to-side shape. Spin on fastball is 10/5 spin, would benefit from staying behind the ball more creating a true 4-seam spin. Tough competitor on mound.
