2015 All-Eastern Kansas League - 1st Team

5/29/14 - Miller Hogan is a 6-foot, 185-pound junior right-handed pitcher for Blue Valley Southwest that has shown steady improvement over the last several months.  Hogan has a deliberate delivery and early balance. Hogan works slightly uphill and throws from a high three-quarters to over-the-top slot.  His fastball velocity was 83-88 most of the game with a heavy dose of 88’s and a few 89’s towards the end of the game.  He throws a 71-74 late breaking 12-6 curveball that was a game-changing pitch on Thursday against Goddard Eisenhower – freezing hitters for called strikes and generating swings/misses for strikeouts.  With command of this pitch established early in the game and becoming the focus for the hitters, his mid-to-upper 80’s fastball became more effective.  On Thursday, he threw a no-hitter as Southwest downed Eisenhower in the first round of the state tournament – just a little over a week removed from throwing another no-hitter in Southwest’s regional.  Including his exploits in the post-season, Hogan put up impressive numbers on the season as a whole throwing 46 innings giving up only 23 hits while walking 14 and striking out 63.  Opponents hit just .146 against Hogan as Southwest played in the ultra-competitive Eastern Kansas League and featured a non-conference schedule as strong as anyone in the state.

5/13/14 - The 6-foot, 175 pound Hogan has a lean, athletic frame with plenty of room to fill out.  The first thing that stood out about Hogan, having only seen him in a bullpen workout previously, is his confidence and mound presence.  Throughout the game he showed intelligence, pitch-ability and command of three pitches.  Miller has a deliberate, easy and deceptive motion with long, loose arm action.  He throws from a ¾ slot with minimal effort.  He hides the ball well and, combined with his easy arm, his 85-88 mph fastball gets up on hitters quicker than they think.  The Timberwolves righty’s fastball has arm-side run that bores into right-handed hitters.  Today he fired a complete game striking out 13 hitters versus a senior-dominated Blue Valley line-up pounding the strike zone and showing swing and miss stuff including a 72-74 breaking ball and 74-75 change-up.  His change-up is much more than a show pitch to left-handed hitters as he utilized it versus both right-handed and left-handed hitters effectively.  He maintains fastball arm speed with this pitch and keeps it in the bottom of the zone with good sinking action.  Unfortunately for Hogan, his counterpart RHP Ryan Cyr of Blue Valley also brought his “A” game throwing a complete game shutout as Southwest lost 3-0.  Cyr, Hansen (see below) and Hogan are all class of 2015 right-handers that have made strides throughout the winter and spring.  This spring he is 3-3 with a save, 1.57 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 36 innings pitching in the highly-competitive Eastern Kansas League. Hogan will be pitching for the Mac-N-Seitz organization this summer.

2/17/14 - Hogan is a 6-foot, 170-pound right-handed pitcher with simple, repeatable delivery.  He has long-ish arm action and throws with some effort but hides the ball from the hitter well.  His fastball was clocked at 81-84 mph and he peppered the bottom of the strike zone with it as much as anyone in camp.  His breaking ball was clocked in the 69-73 range and also showed command of a 70-72 change-up.

11/3/13 - Hogan features a sturdy 6-foot, 185-pound frame and mid 80’s fastball.  He has a compact delivery with good deception as his arm works behind his body until the very end hiding the baseball from the hitter.  He throws from a high ¾ slot and has some effort to his delivery but it doesn’t impede his ability to throw strikes.  Hogan’s 70-73 breaking ball is a true 12-6 curveball and it showed late break at times.  The right-hander also has feel for a change-up with arm side run.  The Blue Valley school district has produced a number of right-handed pitchers that have touched 90 in the last several years – don’t be surprised if Hogan does just that this spring.
