04/25/18- Louisville recruit. Wright got the start for Montverde and would come out dominate, striking out the side in the first. Working 90-93 touching 94 mph, the fastball showed late, heavy late with a lot of down plane action. Wright showed an improved, hard slider at 83-86 mph early, that garnered a lot of swing and misses. The right-hander, who won’t turn 18 until September, has a hue ceiling. There are some mechanical flaws in the delivery that will clean up with his natural athleticism, the full arm swing gets to quality extension, getting the fastball on top of hitters. As he learns to continue to leverage the strong lower half, the velocity will continue to make big jumps. Te slider is much improved and also showed a feel for a changeup, throwing a pair to right-handed hitters, working 77-79 mph Extremely high ceiling for Wright.
10/24/17- Allowed a hit and two walks while striking out three in two innings. He has a big, durable frame at 6-foot-4, 235 pounds. His fastball ranged from 87-93 mph, but was mostly 88-90. His slider was 78-80 mph and flashed depth.
10/15/17- Louisville recruit. Big, strong frame. Short, quick ¾ arm action. Fastball sat 90-92 mph with life down in the zone along with a short, hard slider at 80-84 mph. There is a short stride and some drop and drive, but he is an athletic big, projectable pitcher. There is a huge upside and has a chance to make big jumps and was one of the biggest standouts on the weekend.
7/28/16- Committed to the University of Louisville.
6-foot-3 185 pounds with a tall, strong, and projectable frame. Open at the plate and gets a good separation for his load. Swing can get a little long but he has good bat speed and a nice swing plane. The ball jumps off his bat. Loose, strong arm from 3B.
8/13/19:Powered by a 89-to-91 fastball that has touched 95 in the past and a hard, above-average low-80s slider, Wright presents a pure relief profile, but it’s true swing-and-miss stuff when he’s clicking. That’s a sporadic occurrence, however, as the Louisville righty is perpetually battling his mechanics through an up-tempo motion and constantly issuing free passes – totaling 12 walks in 11.1 innings of work this summer and 13 walks in 9.1 innings this past spring. His stuff is good enough, however, that he’s frequently able to work out of his self-inflicted trouble via strikeout, with Wright striking out 11 and 8 over those same two spans. While with Bourne, Wright held hitters to a paltry .147 average while simultaneously allowing them to reach base at a troubling .385 pace. There’s juice in the arm and perhaps enough to push him into Day Two consideration come 2021, but evaluators will be focusing on Wright’s ability to better find an approach that produces more consistent execution. Elevation of either his changeup or two-plane curve – each of which play well below-average at present – could help build out the profile with a change-of-pace weapon.
