In this matchup 2018 RHP of Highlands Ranch HS Josh Thompson (Seattle) showed the state that he has taken his game to another level from last spring, and could even get a couple of looks in June's amateur draft. 6-foot-2, 170 pounds, Thompson pounded the strike zone with a fastball that lived 89 mph, touching 90 five times, and 92 once. Comes from a high 3/4 arm angle, and gets great extension to the zone with strong leg drive. Good down angle in zone, but also elevates fastball when needed, which has some late arm-side run. Has developed a hybrid type wipeout slider that is thrown between 73-76 mph with late depth. The Eagle hitters couldn't touch either. Allowed 3 hits in 6 innings, striking out 12 batters, which included 6 of the first 9 he faced.
3-1-17
6-foot-2, 160 pounds. If you put 20 more pounds on him he will throw 90. Love the down angle and how he attacks the strike zone. Strikes is the key. Fastball was 85 from over the top arm slot but looks faster and is on you. There is some effort in motion, but all thre pitches come from loose arm and is repeatable. Could be the most underrated player in state. Could make a big jump this spring. Would expect to be at least upper 80s by May.
1.31.16
A 6-foot-2, 150-pound switch hitter who ran a 4.3 home to first. At the plate his swing mirrors itself on both sides of the plate. He is tall with a slight leg kick for timing. Long arms keep the bat in the hitting zone and good weight transfer produced an exit velocity of 84 MPH. On the mound he gets the most out of his 6-2 frame. He is tall through balance and then drives t the plate. He does a nice job of extending and releasing out front. He showcased an 83 MPH fastball with good late movement; a 75 MPH hard curve ball with 10/4 break and a 76 MPH change. In the field he showed an 88 MPH arm velocity from the outfield. Identified with the most projectable arm at the UCI.
8-16-14
6-foot-1, 140-pound switch-hitting outfielder/right-handed pitcher has good projectability. Hits from a wide, tall setup, with short stride and gets extension with a high finish producing 75 mph exit velocity off tee. Defensively, threw 75 mph from long, loose, high ¾ to over-the-top arm slot in the infield and outfield. Showed average hands playing through the baseball and crow hops. Ran a 7.10 60. On the mound, fastball sat 73-74 mph from the same arm slot as in the outfield and infield, with arm side run and above average arm speed. Utilizes tall and fall delivery, stride direction stays in line with home plate, lands square with smooth rhythm throughout, glide steps from the stretch. 65-68 mph curveball backed up at times. Thompson is a prospect to follow closely over the next two years thanks to his athletic frame. When he fills out he projects as a mid to upper 80's thrower.
