Underclass Invitational Pitching Analysis

The Prep Baseball Report’s Underclass Invitational took place January 31st at Slammers South. 63 prospects showed up and strutted their stuff in a pro-style workout. Over the next several days the PBR Scouting staff will roll out position-by-position rankings of the event.

We continue our break down of the Underclass Invitational by looking at the pitching position.

Pitcher Analysis:  Best of the Best 

Dalton Chandler, RHP, Lamar High School (2018)
A 6-foot-4, 195-pound right hand pitcher who is a presence on the mound with his 6-4 frame.  He stand tall and works from a quick motion, he throws from a high ¾ arm slot and does a nice job of keeping arm speed up on all pitches.  He lands in-line with the plate and falls off to the first base side on his finish.  He featured an 86 MPH fastball with movement away from the right hand hitter.  He added a 67 MPH curve with sharp 11/5 break and a 70 MPH change that works down in the zone. Identified with the best power fastball for the UCI.

Riley Cornelio, RHP/SS, Pine Creek High School (2019)
A 6-foot-2, 160-pound right hand hitter who ran a 4.5 home to first.   At the plate he hits from a wide balanced stance.  He has a short stride and good weight transfer through the zone.  Quick hands helped produce an 86 MPH exit velocity.  On the mound stand tall and then gets compact during his motion.  He lands slightly closed and throws across his body.  He gets good extension out front on his fastball, which registered at 85 MPH with good command of the plate.  He added a 68 MPH curve with sweeping 10/4 break and a 74 MPH change.   In the field he shows smooth actions and quick feet to the ball.  He works well on balls to the backhand side.  He featured an 82 MPH arm with accuracy.   Identified as the best two way player and most projectable 2019 player at the UCI.

Sanjay Solomon, RHP/OF, Boulder High School (2018)
A 6-foot-3, 185-pound right hand pitcher with a quick arm and good extension out front on delivery.  He throws from a balanced stance and land in-line with the plate.  Quick arm action from a high ¾ arm slot produced an 82 MPH fastball with good command of the zone.  He added a 65 MPH curve with sharp 11/5 break.  His show case finished with a 69MPH curve that had late downward movement.  Identified with the best breaking ball at the UCI.

Josh Thompson, RHP/OF, Highlands Ranch High School (2018)
A 6-foot-2, 150-pound switch hitter who ran a 4.3 home to first.  At the plate his swing mirrors itself on both sides of the plate.  He is tall with a slight leg kick for timing.  Long arms keep the bat in the hitting zone and good weight transfer produced an exit velocity of 84 MPH.  On the mound he gets the most out of his 6-2 frame.  He is tall through balance and then drives t the plate.  He does a nice job of extending and releasing out front.  He showcased an 83 MPH fastball with good late movement; a 75 MPH hard curve ball with 10/4 break and a 76 MPH change.  In the field he showed an 88 MPH arm velocity from the outfield.  Identified with the most projectable arm at the UCI.

Zac Dammel, RHP/1B, Highlands Ranch High School (2018)
A 6-foot-2, 155-pound left hand hitter who ran a 4.59 home to first.  At the plate he stand slightly open with a short stride to square up.  He gets good weight transfer on the swing and keeps the bat extended in the hitting zone.  He registered a 78 MPH exit velocity.  On the mound he stand tall and at balance begins to sink and drive to the plate.  He throws from a high ¾ arm slot with good extension on his pitches.  He featured a 78 MPH fastball with good command of the outer 1/3rd of the plate.  He added a 64 MPH 11/5 breaking curve and a 70 MPH change.  He does a nice job with arm speed on all three pitches.  In the field he showed good actions attacking ground balls.  He gets rid of the ball quickly and is accurate with a 78 MPH arm.  Identified as the most projectable player at the UCI.

Nick Englhard, LHP/OF, Mountain Vista High School (2019)
A 5-foot-8, 130-pound left hand pitcher who has a quiet and effective motion on the mound.  He shows good balance and timing getting out of his glove.  He lands in-line with the plate and throws from an over the top arm slot.  He finishes square to the plate and in good fielding position.  He featured a 70 MPH fastball with good command of the outer 1/3rd of the plate.  He added a 59 MPH curve with sweeping break to the right hand hitter and a 60 MPH change. 

Reese Lansville, RHP/3B, ThunderRidge High School (2018)
A 5-foot-9, 140-pound right hand pitcher who has a smooth motion and delivery to the plate.  He slightly rotates away from the plate at balance and then sinks and drives to the plate.  He lands in-line with the plate and delivers from a high ¾ arm slot.  He finishes facing the first base bag.  He featured an 80 MPH fastball with late movement and a 72 MPH curve with 11/5 sweeping break.  He finished out his showcase with a 70 MPH change that was thrown with the same arm speed as his fastball. Identified with the best 3 strike approach at the UCI.

Harry Paul, LHP/OF, Fairview High School, (2018)
A 5-foot-8, 145-pound left hand pitcher who continues to improve with each showcase.  He has an easy motion that is fluid to the plate.  He lands slightly closed and throws from a high ¾ arm slot.  He finishes square to the plate in good position.  He featured a 70 MPH fastball with good command of the zone.  He also showed a 55 MPH curve and his best pitch is a 57 MPH change with good downward action. 

Cory Ritchie, RHP/1B, ThunderRidge High School (2019)
A 6-foot-3, 195-pound right hand pitcher who stand tall and falls to the plate on his delivery.  He closes off a bit at balance and lands in-line to the plate.  Could be more explosive with his backside on delivery.  He featured a 76 MPH fastball with good command of the inside of the plate.  He added a 67 MPH curve with 11/5 break and a 67 MPH change that stayed down in the zone. 

Kellan Voggesser, RHP/OF, Fort Collins High School (2019)
A 6-foot-0, 165-pound right hand pitcher who stand wide on the mound and does a nice job getting to balance.  He breaks his glove early and throws from a high ¾ arm slot.  He will benefit from getting more extension out front on his delivery.  He showcased a 77 MPH fastball that works away from the right-handed hitter.  He added a 63 MPH curve with sweeping 10/4 break and a 69 MPH change with good downward movement.
