10/06/19

PBR N CA Uncommitted Senior Games - Lanky long body type on 6-foot-2 165-pound frame, still years away from physical maturity. As this event was late in the fall, the lower velocities were not quite representative of what we saw last spring (80-82). Fluid delivery, good body control, pitches with good tempo and timing of upper/lower half. Stays in-line to plate and lead foot plants well, allowing overhand slot to deliver his hand to a consistent position to manipulate the ball at a consistent release point. Classic three pitch mix, with some slight fastball movement just off the barrel, a big overhand curveball thrown with consistent feel and a change-up with some bottoming out action. Spring season will be looking to see where the velocity settles as a better indication of his future beyond high school.

3/07/19

vs Ukiah - Uncommitted; continues to be an intriguing pitcher given the ease with which he delivers the ball with that long lanky body; is going to need to add strength to develop some more velocity as his arm action is smooth but not particular quick, delivery has rhythm as he gets to overhand slot, routinely displays control for three pitches, was a bit up in the zone early in this one but started to dial it in as he eased into the game, fastball T83, settled in 81-82, curveball 70-72 mph and 75 mph change-up. He's a projection prospect at this time.

1/27/19

PBR N CA Preseason All-State - PITCHER - 6-foot-2, 165-pounds, remains long and lanky, but has put on good size since last viewing, body type still favorably projectable. Competed as a two-way player, on the mound has overhand slot, loose arm, works easily with good rhythm, good direction down slope, lands a bit on heel with foot in-line with target, heel land causes some spin out and a little loss of leverage, good length of the stuff through the zone, feel of the zone with three pitches, fastball (T81) not real firm but with more extension there is more velocity coming, best curveballs (68-70 mph) came in stretch, short break, easy smooth shape to it, best secondary pitch is change-up (71 mph) thrown with feel and good depth with late movement.

1/27/19

PBR N CA Preseason All-State - 1st BASE - Lanky ling frame, long, fluid and wide stride (7.81 60-yd). Open, relaxed stance with hands and bat on back shoulder; bat lifts up and back with front knee lift starting to tuck back arm early into swing. Swing shows uphill path with ability to be on time and drive balls into pullside gap; drives through stiff front leg and projects more power at full maturity (75 exit velo). Very flexible and agile around the bag getting out and picking balls with soft glove; uses long frame well in receiving the ball and feet play wide outside the body with strong movement at the position. Arm shows length, but able to adjust for shorter actions when needing to get rid of the ball and out of ear release (73 MPH).

8/25/18

PBR N CA Underclass Games - 6-foot-2, 150-pounds, long and lanky, lots of arms and legs and clearly still growing into his body. Given his still developing body, McMahon’s projectability is quite favorable. Two-way high school player though the pitching ability looks to have more upside. Overhand slot, loose and agile delivery, generally good direction to the plate but was spinning off a bit which caused inconsistent release point. Stride was landing on his heel and upsetting his balance, which could indicate that his stride is a little long. Arm works free and easy, loose and clean. High lift allows him to gather over the rubber. Fastball has been steadily been increasing as we’ve seen him a few times the last year. Didn’t use the breaking ball in this brief outing. Offensively he had a good showing with a smooth and rhythmic load, starting from a tall and open stance. Displayed some pull-side pop in BP then backed it up with a triple down the right field line in game action. Showed zone discipline in his second plate appearance. Defensively he moves around 1st base well and the arm is consistent with what he shows on the mound.

6/03/18

6/1/18-6/3/18 BAWS 2018 - Body type maintains long lankiness and continues to appear to be quite projectable but with a limited ceiling on mass. Stretch only in outing with full back turn to add above average deception to pitches. Rotational in motion and going down hill, but showed mid-3/4 whippy longer armed action. Fastball 77-79 mph with some occasional cut to glove side and ability to miss bats up in the zone. Slider 65-68 mph with flat plane on the pitch; small break with tendency to slow arm and get around pitch. All pitches were up in zone with most ending up glove side because of the rotational tendencies. Pitched around some hits to limit damage. Arm is very easy and feel for the zone and his pitches was still evident. Mound presence was good and controlled his outing well. Understands the craft of pitching.

1/27/18

Preseason scrimmage - The projectability continues to show up with McMahon, saw a bigger body today, stuff was more crisp and live through the zone. He's coming on faster as a pitcher than he looked like he might, very well could impact the varsity team as a sophomore.

6/26/17

6/24-6/26 BAWS 2017 - Long and still developing 6-foot-1 145-pound right-hander, still growing into his frame, which is pretty evident, still a long way from physical maturity but he showed that his mechanics and feel and stuff are as projectable as his body type, strike-thrower with good secondary pitches and a clear idea of how to pitch, coach's son who has taken what he's learned and made it part of his game, offensively he has a swing that works and will continue to work when the strength comes.
