8/15/22

Cape Cod: The UCLA righty was a solid weapon out of the pen for the Bruins this spring, chewing through 44 innings in 35 appearances flashing some swing-and-miss stuff while being a little too hittable at times by catching the fat of the zone. He took a step forward this summer, impressing in relief for the Red Sox and finishing the regular season with a 2.36 ERA while striking out 24 in 19 innings of work and earning a spot on the East All-Star Team. Jewett worked 93-95 mph with his fastball (2150 rpm) while backing it up with an plus downer breaker that sat 80-82 mph (3050 rpm) with depth and hard bite. His 83-84 mph changeup was also a weapon, showing sharp armside dive and good arm speed deception off of the heater. Jewett looks the part of a potential impact arm at the back of the pen for the Bruins this spring and has the depth of arsenal to transition into a starter role if he's able to maintain his stuff over multiple turns of the lineup. There's some violence in his motion and, despite finishing three innings multiple times for Y-D, some decrease in execution and quality of his offerings over his longer stints. He'll be an interesting arm to monitor this fall and could emerge as one of the better day two relief prospects in next year's draft class. A successful conversion to a starter role could knock his stock up a couple notches, as well.

7/17/19

Underclass Area Codes: The UCLA commit worked his fastball from black-to-black at 90-91 mph while his sharp curveball flashed depth at 75-76 mph. Jewett threw one chageup at 75 mph. Jewett shows a loose, clean arm and a delivery that he’s able to repeat. He hides the ball well in the back of his compact delivery motion making it difficult for hitters to pick up the spin. He gains ground down the mound while landing inline consistently. He looks more physical than his 6-foot-3, 180-pound listing as he appears thicker in the neck/shoulders area.

2/20/19

Jewett continues to impress no matter the position he plays. On this day he was in left field where he didn’t have many chances at balls directly but he showed an understanding of the position in the way he backed up plays to his left. On one occasion he had a ball to his left that he cut off and quickly got back into the infield showing some range.  At the plate he put together two quality at-bats in which he fought off pitch-after-pitch to earn a pair of walks. It’s unclear at this point what position Jewett will end up playing at the next level, but for now he has tools and plenty of projection behind the plate, on the mound where he touches 92 regularly, and at the plate. While the position piece will sort itself out in the future, in the present Jewett is a high ceiling prospect that will be a mainstay on the JSerra roster for the next three seasons.

1/21/19

JSerra MLK Tourney: Luke Jewett is the No. 11 player in the state Class of 2021 rankings where he earned that ranking primarily as a catcher. After seeing him pitch this weekend he is likely to climb those rankings due to his prowess on the mound. Working 88-89 and touching 90 with the fastball, Jewett shows the ability to keep the pitch down in the zone and elevate it to induce swing-and-miss passes. He touched 90 from the stretch twice in this outing. His fastball showed some cut action into lefties on a couple of occasions while working the pitch black-to-black. Worked his curveball at 71-72 with sharp, biting action down in the zone. Threw two sliders at 74 and 75 respectively resulting in a swing-and-miss and a weak groundout to second base. The pitch flashes above average potential. There's physical projection to his 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame that is long, lean, and wiry strong with squared shoulders and large feet.

1/19/19

JSerra MLK Tourney: Though he also doubles as a catcher with a 6.92 60-yard dash time, Jewett's work on the mound is what elevates him as one of the top prospects in the class. With the sun set, the temperatures dipped at JSerra with a chilly breeze, but Jewett showed no ill-effects when coming in for a single inning in the middle of the game. The long and lean, 6-foot-2, 175-pound right-hander pounded the strike zone with a heavy fastball that touched 91 mph with some late life to the arm side. Still sporting plenty of room to continue filling out his broad-shouldered frame, it seems likely that Jewett will continue to see velocity gains in the future. He features a short arm stroke with a slightly open land with normal effort out front. He gets solid extension out front after delivering from a high ¾ slot, though he is still gaining use of his lower-half to drive down the mound. Working exclusively out of the stretch (many of the pitchers on the weekend did so purposively), he attacked the zone at mostly 89-90 flashing a single slider at 74 mph. With much more likely on the way for Jewett, especially as he becomes more polished on the mound, he is an exciting prospect to watch in the class who could make a big jump in the future.

1/05/19

SoCal Preseason All-State, 6-foot-2, 175-pounds, long, athletic frame with lots of physical projection remaining. Batting from the right side, Jewett has a nice, balanced line drive swing. In his BP round, Jewett hit the ball hard to all parts of the field and showed a very mature approach. Flashes a consistent barrel on a slightly uphill path with good leverage and usage of his lower half. Defensively, Jewett has very good skills behind the plate. Has an above average arm and made accurate throws around the bag. Sets up deep in his crouch before adjusting upwards. Is quiet and balanced with a wide base and chest sticking out towards the pitcher. Hands are very soft and his exchanges are quick and clean. Showed off his athleticism by running a 6.92 60 yard dash. Also a pitcher where he projects very well, although he did not pitch at the event.

1/05/19

SoCal Preseason All-State Quick Hits - Jewett, the 11th ranked player in his class in the state, suffered a bit of a tweak in his back a few weeks ago but that didn't stop him from performing well at the event. After running a 6.92 60 yard dash, Jewett showed some serious juice in the bat at the plate where he sprayed line drives to the gaps and registered a 91 mph exit velocity. Showed well behind the plate where he is quiet with his body and has a big time arm popping in the 1.93 - 2.01 range on the day.

8/25/18

6-foot-2, 165-pounds, lean body, room to fill out, has present day strength but looks to be natural, good young athlete body. One of the top 2021’s we’ve seen in California. Two-way player and is a prospect both as pitcher and catcher. On mound has overhand slot and short, catcher-ish arm action, clean and simple delivery, pitched entirely from stretch, slight cross-body stride, good front side of body, strong stable lower body, repeatable delivery with consistent release point from pitch to pitch. Fastball was up to 88 mph and it wasn’t hard for him. Looks fully capable of being in the low-90s by the time he’s out of high school. Fastball fairly straight but good length through zone, mixed in usable change-up as well. Offensively has a tall set-up, starts open, balanced with a short fluid load with strong dominant hands. Stays inside with strength through middle of the field. Ball jumps off bat, lots of power comes from his lower half. Defensively has clean and efficient catch/throw skills to go with a strong arm that projects to be plus arm. Good carry to the bag.

3/27/18

Fresno Easter Classic - Uncommitted. 6-foot-2, 165-pound frame. Lean, long, athletic build with squared shoulders and lots of room to grow and fill out. Jewett uses a deliberate delivery which is slow before the ball explodes out of his hand from a high ¾ arm slot. Jewett showed command of his fastball that has late, tailing life into righties and touched 87 mph while sitting 84-86 mph. He uses his length and drive off the rubber to generate downhill plane with the pitch. Jewett's changeup, which he threw two times, shows good deception and late sink from the same arm slot as his fastball and curveball. The pitch was clocked at 79 and 81 mph on the two occasions he threw it. Jewett also threw a sharp, late breaking curveball that flashes downer action at 72-74 mph.
