6/28/20

Body: Medium-Large, flexible greyhound type frame with high, trim waist.  Live athlete, +body control. Normal, strong, muscle build with wide shoulders, strong hands, and long legs. Lacking in upper body strength at current time with ample room to grow.  Ideal frame for a position player.

Hit: Hit over power. Explosive, compact swing. Hands allow the barrel to create easy lift and there’s a strong ability to transfer energy up the chain and through the baseball utilizing a kick back matched with his locked in front side. Will hit for average.

Power: Over the fence power potential. Can get beat with +FB at current time, but added strength will allow him to get to this ball and drive down the RF line consistently.  Creates excellent early connection, leverage, and full extension.

Field: Sound defensive actions and mechanics at shortstop and the outfield.  +Defender at SS/CF with good instincts. Quick, smooth double-play transfers from short and sets feet when needed.

Arm: Always on target with slight arm side tail. One-hops mitt regularly from outfield (90MPH). Can throw from all angles accurately from shortstop (85MPH).

Run: 6.65 60-yard. Twitchy, lead-off type speed. Will extend range in outfield.

Comp: Peter Bourjos (Angels)

SummaryButler is an elite overall athlete showing speed, some pop in the bat, and above average defensive skills from both the outfield and shortstop positions. In my opinion Butler is the quintessential “Modern Ball-Player”, a swiss-army knife so to speak; hyper-athletic, can play multiple positions, and is a football and basketball player. If you asked him to pitch and catch, he could probably do that at a high level too, he can do it all. The Oakland A’s 2020 Area Code Team selection confirms what we already know, he’s a good baseball player.

Plane Analysis: Butler demonstrated an average Plane swing performance compared to other players with similar level of play. If he stayed longer on plane, he would consistently barrel up balls,  and make better adjustments with his body.

Connection Analysis: Cameron demonstrated an above average Connection swing performance comparatively. If one has good connection, it shows better swing adjustability in all pitch locations; you’ll have better plate coverage and generate more power to all parts of the field.

Rotation Analysis: Butler exhibited an above average Rotation swing performance comparatively. He displayed the ability to sequence correctly by using his hips followed by his hands and showed the ability to adjust his swing.

NorCal Preseason All-State: Butler has been one of my favorite players in the 2021 class for some time, and the tooled-up athlete showed why again during the event. I learned he’s still in basketball season, after playing football, and he claimed he was only at about 85-90% of where he needed to be on the diamond; there’s not many that can match his athletic ability (6.94 60yd). At the plate the explosive hands allow the barrel to create easy lift and there’s a strong ability to transfer energy up the chain and through the baseball utilizing a kick back matched with his locked in front side; linedrives carried through the fog into RCF/LCF/LF showing his ability to manipulate the barrel (96 EV). On defense he shows the ability to cover all over the shortstop position and the ability to break down to stay in time as he moved through the baseball. The arm is a plus for the position as balls regularly showed firm life across the diamond ending chest high (84 MPH); the longer actions could have long-term questions about sticking at SS, but I’ll take the live, plus arm any day. Great character kid with a very high ceiling.

8/05/19

Summer Scouting - Cal Poly Commit. Butler is another guy getting ready for Underclass Area Code games and looked like the same elite athlete that he’s shown consistently, playing strong defense in CF, arm strength on the mound and the pop in the bat. Offensively showed a quick and compact swing that stays balanced and behind the baseball very well; above-average hand speed able to get the barrel through the zone on upward path. HR to LCF that got out in a hurry and 2B off the top of the wall in LF during the game. Had a strikeout on a SLD, but showed ability to foul off pitches and work the count in that AB. In CF, has freedom to go get the ball and with his arm prevents runners from even looking to advance. Pitched the final three innings giving up no runs, working with strong tempo and a fluid delivery to attack with three pitches. Quick, loose arm from H3/4 moves freely and repeats it. FB 83-85 T87 moved the pitch around getting swings on it through the top of the zone; solid control set-up all other pitches. CHG 77-78 with late run arm side under barrels of RHH; got an ugly sword for a swinging K. CB 69-70 12/6 shape with rolling depth; had a couple back up but also could get fingers over and into zone with some feel. Butler has a chance to be the top 2021 region player in Northern California when all said and done

1/27/19

PBR N CA Preseason All-State - Full, medium frame with rolled shoulders and lean lower half showing strength in build. Very quick feet after strong push off starting line with strong posture kept during inline runs (6.79 60-yd). Balanced stance with slight bend in his knees keeping high hands and high back elbow; controlled foot lift as hands turn barrel to pitcher with slight move downwards. Explosive bat speed with late acceleration and lag through the zone using one hand finish to get big extension; drives balls deep into the gaps and flashes of more leverage to flash future pop (96 exit velo). Very quick feet allow him to cover range with ability to chop step and move through the ball; very clean and soft hands flashing strong glove skills and ability to make hard plays look easy. Quick, compact arm with very quick release putting ball online with throws (82 MPH). A very impressive and explosive athlete showing as one of the Top 2021 players in NorCal. A name coaches are going to want to follow this Spring.
