ripley 3, Hurricane 2
Ripley, No. 6 in the most recent Metro News AAA Power Rankings, paid a visit to No. 2 Hurricane on Wednesday night. The result was the second one-run game played between the two clubs in the past four days, with the outcome not being decided until the final inning.
The Vikings struck first when leadoff hitter Christopher Jordan, a West Virginia State signee, walked to start the game. He advanced to second on an infield single by Cody Pittenger, a Surry CC commit. Following a ground out that advanced both runners, Glenville State recruit Jared Bumpus grounded out to first base scoring Jordan with the game's first run.
Hurricane (15-5) answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the 2nd inning when sophomore Chandler Kelley doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Beau Adkins.
Jordan was instrumental in Ripley regaining the lead in the top of the 3rd inning. Following his second walk in as many at bats Jordan advanced swiped second and third and then scored from second on an errant pick-off attempt.
The Redskins made it a 2-2 game in the bottom of the 5th inning when Branson Martin singled with one out, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Noah Berthisel single.
The Vikings for a third time in the game took a one run lead in the top of the 7th inning and once again Jordan was involved. A one out triple by sophomore Lane Casto set the stage for the go-ahead run and Jordan delivered with a sacrifice to bring Casto home with what turned out to be the winning run.
Ripley starter Luke Layhew worked around a one out single to close out the win for the 16-8 Vikings. The junior right-hander went the distance scattering nine hits while allowing two earned runs with three strikeouts.
Hurricane pitchers Aaron Perry and Jack Johnston held Ripley to just four hits with Casto (2-3, R, 3B) collecting two of them. The Redskins were led offensively by Perry (2-4), Martin (2-4, 2B, R) and Kelley (2-3, 2B, R).
