Wisconsin State Games: Preview

By: David Go
Staff Writer

The Prep Baseball Wisconsin staff is thrilled to host the first-ever Wisconsin State Games on Tuesday, July 30 and Wednesday, July 31 at The Rock Sports Complex in Franklin. The two-day, invite-only event will host the best high school players across the state in the classes of 2025, 2026 and 2027.

Check out the roster on our website, listed here. The event information and pitching rotations is listed here. Below looks into the numerous standouts who will be in attendance for the two-day event.

Jack Lutz SS / 2B / Whitnall, WI / 2025

From 3/16/2024: "The left-handed hitter has a smooth and repeatable swing that produced notable exit velocities, maxing out at 92.3 mph and averaging 87.0 mph, was among the day's best. In the infield, Lutz ranges to the ball with ease and makes the routine play look easy. His arm was up to 87 mph across the infield and should easily stick at short at the next-level. Lutz will likely fill out and tap into even more raw power, arm strength and foot speed with more lower half strength and power. The Whitnall star is the top uncommitted player in Wisconsin's 2025 class."

Mason Sommer LHP / 1B / West Bend East, WI / 2025

From 2/17/24: "High-upside left hander who possesses one of the higher ceilings in the state. The 6-foot-5, 168-pound lefty has long levers with a lean and wiry build that seems capable of handling more strength. It’s an up-tempo delivery with a high leg-lift and athletic movement downhill, leading to a full arm action into a ¾ slot. Sommer sat in the mid-80s and topped at 85.7 mph on his fastball, showing a 4-seamer with life and a sinker with arm-side run. His upper-60s curveball has depth with some sweeping action, while his changeup sinks to the arm-side at 75-77 mph. Offensively, Sommer uses a rhythmic toe-tap, creating good separation to generate power. It’s a slightly uphill path that leads to balls hit in the air through the middle of the field. The West Bend native also showed good footwork around the bag at first base. The size and athleticism is there for Sommer, as he is certainly an intriguing uncommitted prospect inside of the Badger State."

Ben Verges LHP / 1B / Franklin, WI / 2025

From 6/29/24: "6-foot-3, 225-pound muscular build with noticeable strength in the lower half. Physical presence on the rubber with a long stride to home plate. Long, arm slot. Fastball up to 86.4 mph with above average carry. Slider keeps hitters guessing at 70-73 mph. Commands the zone well and keeps the ball down, leading to groundballs when hitters make contact."

Jack Roventini RHP / RHP / Arrowhead, WI / 2025

From 6/29/24: "An athletic 6-foot-2, 185-pound build, Roventini is an athletic and clean mover on the bump, pairing it with a deceptive arm path that certainly makes it tough to pick up for opposing batters. Roventini reaches 90 mph with the fastball and has shown the ability to go in and out of the zone with it, too. He also has shown confidence in his sweeping breaking ball in the mid-70s, a swing-and-miss pitch."

Charlie Slawinski RHP / RHP / Brookfield East, WI / 2025

From 2/17/24: "Showed an impressive skill set on both sides of the ball, with upside at both shortstop and on the mound. At the plate he showed rhythm with his hands, a flat bat path with line drives up-the-middle and to the pull side. His 97.2 mph max exit velocity was among Saturday’s best. Defensively, he showed the ability to stick at shortstop with quality actions and feet, lateral quickness with body control and soft hands. It’s a loose athletic arm up to 89 mph across the diamond, with the ability to throw on the move with accuracy. On the mound, Slawinski used an uptempo delivery and a short arm path on the mound, with athletic, downhill movement. The fastball sat strictly 86-87 mph with life out of the hand and to the arm-side run. His curveball showed sharp 11/5 break, complimenting his fastball well. The junior also flashed a developing changeup at 79-81 mph."

Sam Hirthe RHP / SS / New Berlin Eisenhower, WI / 2025

From 4/6/24: "Long 6-foot, 167-pound frame with room to fill out. Got the start in game two of the double-header against Greendale. Out of an easy and athletic delivery, Hirth ran his fastball up to 87 mph in his outing, while sitting 84-86 mph throughout. He went to a sweeping breaking ball in the mid-70s pretty often, showing quality feel to throw it in the zone for strikes and out of it for swing-and-miss. While he didn’t go to it much, he also does possess a high-70s changeup that has shown out-pitch potential in our previous looks, too. He would finish his outing with six strikeouts across his 4.1 inning of work, and scattered just two hits while walking just one. After hitting an 89 mph high at the South Milwaukee ID just a couple of months ago, Hirthe continued to impress during his first start of the season and is certainly an uncommitted name-to-know in the state’s junior class."

Dimitry Edmunds C / OF / Appleton West, WI / 2025

From 2/24/24: "Showed tremendous athleticism at the Green Bay event, a catcher who recorded the second-best 60-yard time at 6.92. Offensively, Edmunds has a balanced set-up that leads to a compact swing working directly toward the ball. His hands are strong, helping to generate much of the 98 mph exit velocity he maxed out at. Behind the plate, the junior showed quick feet and soft blocking skills. His throws had carry and accuracy, leading to pop times as low as 2.04 seconds. Edmunds’ athleticism was evident in his outfield defense, showing quality actions while reaching 86 mph on his top throw."

Max Glusick SS / OF / Sun Prairie East, WI / 2025

From 6/29/24: "Athletic shortstop with above-average tools and a terrific in-game performer. Glusick helped lead Sun Prairie East on a deep state run, showing solid feel to hit with gap-to-gap power and speed on the offensive side, reaching 92 mph on his exit velocity. It's a balanced right-handed swing that worked throughout the WIAA season. Defensively, he's rangy with an arm up to 79 mph. The Sun Prairie East infielder is one of the more polished in the incoming-senior class."

Matthew Gruber OF / Union Grove, WI / 2025

From 3/3/24: "Gruber showed speed and feel to hit in Sunday’s event, recording a 6.86 seconds 60-yard dash time (2nd best at the event) to go with his impressive round of batting practice. The left-handed hitter works from a wide base to a good hitting position, with controlled and quiet movements. It’s a compact swing with some loft and quick hands that allow him to drive the ball to all fields; and he recorded a max exit velocity of 93.4 mph. Defensively, the junior showed quality direction and intention through the ball, working up to 83 mph from the outfield. Gruber has a unique combination of strength and quickness that should propel him to an excellent 2024."

Braylan Bigler 2B / RHP / Brookfield Central, WI / 2025

From 3/16/24: "Bigler continued his string of quality performances in front of our staff. To kick off his day, Bigler recorded a 6.93 60-yard dash and also reached a max jump height of 27 inches, showing off some explosive athleticism. During his round of BP, features a quick right-handed bat that shot line drives from gap-to-gap and he averaged an exit velocity 85.5 mph. His Blast metrics were also impressive, as he averaged a bat speed of 71.1 mph and a rotational acceleration of 16.7 mph, both of which are well-above average marks. Defensively, he is a quick and powerful mover on the infield with sure-handed actions that look the part of an up-the-middle defender at the next-level."

Tavian Shramek RHP / SS / Blair-Taylor, WI / 2025

From 6/29/24: "Shramek was responsible for the loudest ‘pen of the day and is an uncommitted name-to-know in the state’s incoming senior class. Standing at a projectable 6-foot-1, 183-pounds the right-hander comes at you from a low-slot and feel for four pitches. Shramek ran his fastball up to 86.5 mph showing feel for the zone, the fastball played with heavy sinking action and armside run averaging 15.3 inches on the pitch. Shramek also showed a low-80s sinker that averaged 4 inches of IVB and 17.6 inches of run. His offspeed pitches were equally impressive, the first was a sweeping slider that played in the low-70s with 16.7 inches of sweep on average. Rounding off his arsenal, Shramek threw a heavy fading changeup that averaged 1.8 inches of IVB and 17.5 inches on run. The Blair-Taylor standout had one of the best springs in the state, allowing one earned run in 55 innings, striking out 138."

Preston Yaucher SS / RHP / Edgewood High Schol of the Sacred Heart, WI / 2025 / Penn State Commit

From 3/10/24: "Yaucher showed up boasting a more filled out and thicker frame, which certainly aided him across multiple aspects of the game. To kick off the day, he recorded a 6.90 60-yard dash and a max jump height of 32.3 inches, both of which are higher-end metrics. Then during his round, Yaucher took short and compact swings to the ball, spraying line drives to all parts of the field. His added strength certainly added some more pop to his right-handed bat, as his hardest ball came off at 94.3 mph, and he averaged 86.4 mph throughout. We have long known Yaucher to be a premier defender up-the-middle and Sunday’s round of infield defense furthered that notion even more. Working athletically from side-to-side, Yaucher presented soft and confident hands, pairing it with an arm that topped at 86 mph across - certainly looking like a sure-fire shortstop at the next-level."

Brett Biondich 1B / RHP / Kettle Moraine Lutheran, WI / 2026 / TCU Commit

From 6/29/24: "Biondich was an early commit to TCU but has continued to improve since agreeing to join the Horned Frogs. The incoming-junior reached 92 mph with heavy run this spring, paired with a solid mid-70s breaking ball. The Kettle Moraine Lutheran standout could have a future at the dish, showing excellent bat speed that led to above-average power with some feel to hit."

Luke Schaning OF / RHP / Nathan Hale High, WI / 2026

From 3/16/24: "Schaning turned in a notable performance with the glove and the bat on Saturday. Right-handed hitting Schaning showcased his feel for the barrel with a balanced swing as he was driving baseballs through the big part of the field consistently during his round. Metrically his round was impressive too, as his hardest hit ball came off at 93.3 mph, while averaging 88.9 mph average and his furthest batted ball traveled 355 feet. From the outfield, Schaning reached an 87 mph high and proved to have more than enough arm to man centerfield and right field."

Montgomery O'Brien LHP / OF / Wauwatosa East, WI / 2026

From 3/16/24: "A lean 6-foot-1, 177 pounds, O’Brien took one of the more consistent rounds of BP, averaging an exit speed of 86.4 mph while reaching a max of 95.9 mph, and his furthest batted ball traveled over 350 feet. O’Brien teased his arm strength during his round of outfield defense when he reached a 91 mph high on his hardest throw. His arm strength carried over to the mound exceptionally well. From a loose and clean delivery, O’Brien’s fastball sat in the mid-80s and topped at 86.7 mph with over 16 inches of induced vertical break through the zone. He also spun in a pair of deadly breaking balls; a low-70s curveball with sharp 1/7 break paired with late downer action and a tight sweeping slider in the mid-70s."
