By PBR Wisconsin Staff

As we put the finishing touches on the 2023 WIAA season, we’d like to recognize some of the top players in the state of Wisconsin for their consistent performances throughout the entirety of the spring season.

Last week, we announced our state's Player of the Year and we published our First Team, All-State list. Today, we get one step closer to the conclusion of our spring coverage by unveiling our selections to the Second Team, All-State roster. Below are the 17 players who earned Second Team All-State accolades for their production over the course of this past season. We'll publish our Third Team roster, as well as Honorable Mentions, in the coming days, which will thus end our '23 WIAA coverage.

Carlson, in one of the deepest conferences in the Badger State, separated himself as the top catcher in the group, along with being one of the best backstops in the state. In our multiple looks at Carlson, he continued to demonstrate his ability to drive the baseball and perform well behind the dish. The former 2022 PBR Future Games participant hit .427 on the season, a majority of those at bats coming against Division 1 competition. With 13 extra base hits and 23 RBI, Carlson emerged as a large presence in the middle of the order for Hudson, who remained within the top-20 of the Power 25 for the entirety of the 2023 season, most recently finishing at No. 16. He had a large impact for his team defensively as well, holding a 0.992 fielding percentage by the end of the year, rounding out his game as an all-around athlete who earned a PBR Wisconsin POTW award in the spring. The left-handed hitter remains one of the top uncommitted prospects in the 2024 class, and continues to produce at a high level as he enters the 2023 summer circuit.

FIRST BASEMAN

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE COMMIT (football)

Despite pursuing football in the fall, Stoffel’s baseball season was a noteworthy one, as his career wrapped up this spring. The physical 6-foot-6, 215-pound three-sport athlete put on a show this spring at the plate, using his easy power to hit nine doubles, four triples, and four home runs. Mosinee was placed within the Power 25 in the preseason, and remained there for a majority of the 2023 campaign. Stoffel was a large reason for this, as his presence in the middle of the order added depth and power to the Indians’ lineup. The senior finished with a 1.374 OPS, walking 15 times in comparison to six strikeouts, all while driving in 24 runs. His speed was a key factor for Mosinee as well, stealing 15 times and scoring 27 runs in an electric offense that came up just short of a State Tournament appearance. Nonetheless, Stoffel left his mark as one of the top bats in the state in 2023.

UW-MILWAUKEE COMMIT

Kuhnke was a main factor in Hortonville’s state run in the 2023 campaign, hitting .474 with 23 runs driven in, along with 27 runs scored. The right-handed batter found a healthy formula of power and patience at the plate, hitting 13 extra base hits, along with walking 20 times in comparison to just five strikeouts. The senior finished with a 1.338 OPS, stealing 18 bases in the process. His all-around play on the offensive end was monumental, but the defensive qualities he brought to the table was a difference-maker for the Polar Bears. Kuhnke manned the shortstop position, and got up on the mound across multiple appearances in 2023, emerging as the closer for one of the top teams in the state. In 18 innings pitched, the right-hander was 2-1 with four saves under his belt, striking out 22 batters as well. His all-around play and contributions were a large part of the formula that led Hortonville to the Division 1 State Championship game a couple of weeks ago.

ALABAMA COMMIT

Even though he was limited on the diamond due to injury in 2023, Dix made his impact felt at the plate and at the second base position to lead Whitefish Bay to a Division 1 State Championship. The switch-hitter was a spark and run-producer for the entirety of the season for the Blue Dukes, hitting .452 with eight doubles, two triples, and two home runs. Dix would end up scoring 36 times throughout the year, powering a strong Whitefish Bay offense, which scored 42 runs in six playoff games. The No. 6 rated player in the 2024 class walked 30 times, as opposing pitchers attempted to work around him in this lineup. Unfortunately for his contenders, Dix’s speed is just another part of his skill set that they have to attempt to prepare for, as the to-be senior stole 37 stolen bases. He was able to take over the second base position, paired with fellow teammate MIF Jack Counsell (2023; Michigan) up the middle, which made for a nearly flawless middle infield. Dix returns as one of the top prospects in the Badger State in 2024, as he secures his second straight All-State award in 2023.

Trask put on a show on the offensive end for Oak Creek, as he produced 18 extra base hits by the end of the season, leading the Knights to a Sectional Final appearance. The shortstop hit .453 from the top half of the order, dominating opposing pitchers in the Southeast Conference. Trask was a table-setter for Oak Creek, scoring 39 times and stealing 14 bases in the process. The uncommitted junior finished with a 1.246 OPS, reaching base and hitting for power consistently against tough competition. As a middle infielder, Trask ended his season with a 0.954 fielding percentage at an error-inducing position, playing solid baseball throughout the entirety of the season to earn himself the Second Team All-State honor.

Sam Moses MIF / RHP / Cedarburg, WI / 2024

Moses used a stellar spring season to insert himself as one of the top uncommitted 2024s in the Badger State, as his damage at the plate was noteworthy among the group of infielders. Moses hit .487 on the season, accumulating 16 extra-base hits while walking 17 times. The soon-to-be senior finished with an OPS of 1.395, driving in 29 runs in the process. He was a key presence in the middle of the order for Cedarburg, coming off of a strong sophomore campaign. His pitching has stood out over the summer as well, as our scouting staff has seen him in multiple looks, finding success on the bump as a two-way prospect after showing well this past spring for the Bulldogs.

OUTFIELDERS

Jackson Brewer OF / 1B / Homestead, WI / 2024

BA 2B 3B
HR
RBI
OPS
.425 7 1 6 29 1.236
UNCOMMITTED

Brewer found success during the spring season at a relatively new position, taking a corner outfield spot for Homestead, moving away from the mound and the first base position, for the most part. That didn’t stop his production at the plate though, as the No. 6-rated player in Wisconsin’s 2024 class hit .425 this year with seven doubles and six home runs. One of those home runs came earlier in the season in walk-off fashion against Hartford Union, where the left-handed hitter smashed a pitch over the center field fence sparked a memorable stretch in Homestead's season. Brewer finished with a 1.236 OPS and was the centerpiece for his high school's lineup, shaping him up to do the same again in the spring of 2024. The uncommitted prospect is already thriving on the summer circuit, as he’s carried his momentum from the WIAA into the club ball season.

Hudson Turner OF / Baraboo, WI / 2023

UW-WHITEWATER COMMIT

Situated towards the center of the state, Turner quietly put together a great season for Baraboo, advancing to a Regional final and winning First Team, All-Badger West as an outfielder. He makes our Second Team All-State list after hitting .477 on the year with nine doubles, four triples, and two home runs. The outfielder was a key run-producer for the Thunderbirds, plating 34 runs over the course of the season for a team that relied heavily on their offense. With a 1.303 OPS, Turner scored 28 runs and walked 17 times, stealing 14 bases as well. The Wisconsin-Whitewater commit also got three wins on the mound for Baraboo, rounding him out as one of the best players to come out of the Badger West Conference this season, earning himself this recognition.

The senior hit .553 on the year with an impressive 1.514 OPS, finishing with 19 extra-base hits and 37 runs scored. Schill, similar to other players on this list, was a table-setter for a Pewaukee team that scored runs in bunches throughout the 2023 campaign. He also emerged as a run-producer in this lineup, plating 33 runners. When on base, Schill was a threat to steal as well, swiping 17 bags in 2023 without being caught. His all-around play made a difference for the Pirates, as he set a new school record for batting average, leaving his mark on a historic program.

Ben Berkhof LHP / Hudson, WI / 2023

IP W-L H K ERA WHIP

Berkhof’s strikeout totals is what stands out right away, as the left-handed ace punched out 105 batters this spring, an impressive feat that ultimately led him to being named the Big Rivers Conference Pitcher of the Year. That stat helped him navigate through this past spring with a undefeated record on the mound, finishing 8-0 with an 1.32 ERA. In 53 innings of work, Berkhof only allowed 24 hits and 10 earned runs, maintaining a WHIP of 0.83 by the end of the year. His numbers and success cannot be understated, as he inserts himself as a Second Team All-State award winner after dominating for the entirety of the season.

Keenan Mork RHP / River Falls, WI / 2023

IP W-L H K BB ERA

NOTRE DAME COMMIT

Mork joined the aforementioned Berkhof as another dominant arm inside the Big Rivers, becoming virtually unhittable as the season evolved. Despite finishing with a 5-2 record on the mound, the Notre Dame commit only allowed two earned runs in 39.2 innings of work, good for a minuscule 0.35 ERA. He struck out 75 batters during his time on the mound, nearly averaging two strikeouts per inning. In addition to that, he only allowed 16 hits and 17 walks, controlling the basepaths against opponents to make River Falls a tough matchup, as the Wildcats advanced all the way to Sectionals after being a part of the Power 25 for a majority of the season.

Cole Selvig RHP / Regis, WI / 2023

W-L ERA

TEXAS COMMIT

In sticking with the northwest portion of the state, Selvig earned an All-State nomination and award for a second time in his prep career, once again dominating his competition with Eau Claire Regis. The Texas commit was 7-0 on the bump, holding a nearly flawless 0.22 ERA for the entirety of the season. He was the centerpiece on the mound that led the Ramblers to another quality season, despite falling short of the Division 4 State Tournament this past spring. Selvig has put up some video-game-esque numbers in the past, as he earned a Third Team All-State award during his sophomore season in 2021. This year, he followed that up with Second Team All-State after a successful senior year for Eau Claire Regis.

Nathan Vela RHP / INF / Hortonville, WI / 2023

IP W-L H K ERA WHIP

WINONA STATE COMMIT

Vela was quite influential in the success of Hortonville this spring, as he led the Polar Bears to a Division 1 State Championship berth while working in tandem atop the rotation alongside staffmate RHP Thomas Burns (2023; Arizona State), who was named to our First Team, All-State roster in his own right. Vela, meanwhile, was 6-0 with a 1.24 ERA, highlighted by his electric complete game outing against Franklin in the Division 1 Semifinals, where the Winona State recruit reflected what he had done all season and threw a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts. With a WHIP well below 1.00, Vela only allowed 30 hits and eight earned runs in 45 innings pitched, limiting his walks as he continually controlled his opponents throughout the course of the season. In doing so, Vela had two no-hitters and held his foes to a .132 batting average, separating himself as one of the top arms in the Badger State.

Alivo finished with a 7-0 record, paired with a 1.86 ERA and WHIP of one. In 49 innings of work, the right-hander struck out 89 batters with an electric fastball and a quality offspeed mix. The Iowa commit only allowed 13 earned runs on the season, leading the Cavaliers to a conference championship and five playoff wins, including an 11-0 shutout over Altoona in the Division 2 Semifinals. Even when he wasn’t on the bump, Alivo made an impact on the defensive end at second base, and in the batter's box. As a hitter, the righty hit .398 and was impactful in the middle of the order, driving in a total of 41 runners in addition to his solid efforts as a pitcher.

He only allowed eight earned runs on the year, and consistently put together quality outings each time he took the ball for Oak Creek, continuously winning ball games.
