On Monday night Fluvanna travelled to Harrisonburg for a matchup of two committed arms. While the game lacked offensive fireworks, the arms did not disappoint. VCU commit '22 Evan Bert (Harrisonburg) battled WVU commit '23 John Glasscock (Fluvanna). The two tallied twenty plus strikeouts and allowed less than a half-dozen hits combined over their combined eleven innings of work. Harrisonburg took an early 1-0 lead on an Evan Bert double, but Fluvanna would storm back late to take a 5-1 win from the Blue Streaks.

Take a look at some video and notes on three committed arms from Monday's game.

Fluvanna

John Glasscock RHP / Fluvanna County , VA / 2023

6-foot-1, 163-pound thin athletic frame. Repeatable delivery, down and out stride, and lands on line. Full arm swing that generates plenty of arm speed through his lower three-quarter release. One of the last times we saw Glasscock in game action was at Future Games in 2020. It seems as though the effort has dialed back a little bit and he seems to be able to repeat more consistently. He had good control of the 88-91 mph fastball throughout the night, challenging hitters from the first through the sixth. Glasscock touched 92 a couple times in the first and second and showed big arm side run to the fastball. He did not use the 74-75 mph curveball very often, but seemed to have some feel for the 11/5 breaker that showed some power break. Tried to throw a few sliders that had arm speed, but they lacked shape and feel. Pulled around the three 79-81 mph sliders I saw and they were out of the zone to the glove side. He found bats with the fastball, but very few barrels, allowing a double to his opposing pitcher in the first. Most of his swings and misses on the fastball came up in the zone. All in all, the book on Glasscock coming in was that the stuff is very good but could he have some control in the zone. The West Virginia commit answered the bell yesterday in a big way.

Joe Gomez RHP / SS / Fluvanna County , VA / 2023

It was a short outing for the 5-foot-10, VCU commit. Gomez came on to close it out for the Flucos in the seventh inning. It was a very easy, low effort operation. Long arm swing and throws from a three-quarter arm slot. The fastball had some downhill plane to it, sitting at 83-84 mph and touched 85 once. The breaking ball, as we have seen in the past, has hard 12/6 downer bite. He was able to throw it consistently for strikes at 67-72 mph and offered elite spin that ranged from 2850-2987 RPM in the five that he threw.

Harrisonburg

Evan Bert RHP / 3B / Harrisonburg , VA / 2022

Solid 6-foot, 200-pound frame. Normal effort delivery and lands closed at stride. Full arm swing and a quick, whippy three-quarter arm slot. Bert did not use the 84-86 mph fastball much during his five innings of work. Instead he leaned heavily on a 73-75 mph curveball. He showed really advanced feel for the breaking ball, throwing it in multiple 3-2 counts, and basically any time he wanted. Bert also showed a 78-79 mph changeup that he had feel for in the zone. This was his first outing of the year and while he did not show a consistent feel for the fastball in the zone, it was impressive to see how he was able to lean on the breaking ball so much and was so consistent with it. Bert struck out eleven in five innings, ten of which came on the breaking ball.
