In August, over 50 players from Virginia, DC, and neighboring states descended on Old Dominion University for the Top Prospect II Games. These players were from the Class of 2020, 2021, and 2022. Today we begin our in-depth analysis of the players who took part in that event with the outfielders and first basemen.

 

 

 

Grant Barberich 3B / RHP / Heritage, VA / 2021 Barberich is 6-3 with an athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short loose arm action that is quick with easier effort. Shoulders level and closed, lands square with a varied finish. Fastball was 77-79, touching 80, with downward plane. Curveball was 66-68 with good armspeed and 11/5 break. Straight change-up was 72-74 with good armspeed.

 

 

Vincent Bashara RHP / 2B / Maury, VA / 2020 Bashara is 5-10 with a lankier athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He throws from a lower three-quarters arm slot with a short free arm action with some quickness and normal effort. Shoulders slightly closed and level, lands square with an athletic finish. Fastball was 80-81, touching 82, with downward plane and a bit of late run. Curveball was 66-69 with good armspeed and sharp 11/5 break. Change-up was 75-76 with some armspeed and late run.

 

 

Alex Brown LHP / OF / Osbourn, VA / 2021 Brown is 5-11 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a short loose arm action that is quick with normal effort. Shoulders uphill and closed, lands on line with an athletic finish and slight recoil. Fastball was 77-80 with heavy armside run. Curveball was 67-68 with hard 1/7 break and good armspeed. Showed a change-up in warm-ups with some armspeed.

 

 

Ethan Hennessy 3B / RHP / Norfolk Academy, VA / 2020 Hennessy is 6-2 with an athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a longer loose arm action that is quick with easier effort. Shoulders level and on line, lands square with an athletic finish. Fastball was 78-81, with downward plane and late boring action to armside. Curveball was 63-66 with good armspeed and sharp 11/5 break. Change-up was 70-72 with some armspeed. Slider was 68-70 with late hard 10/4 break with good armspeed, looks more like a cutter now, has chance to be very good pitch.

 

 

Nicholas Hess RHP / 1B / Colonial Heights, VA / 2021 Hess is 6-2 with a lanky frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short free arm action with normal effort. Shoulders uphill and closed, lands slightly closed with a fall off finish. Fastball was 74-78, touch 79, with some late run. Curveball was 66-69 with good armspeed and 11/5 break. Change-up was 71-73 with good armspeed and late sink.

 

 

Landon Higgerson RHP / Great Bridge, VA / 2020 Higgerson is a Radford commit. Higgerson is 6-0 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He throws from multiple arm slots with his primary one being a lower three-quarters arm slot, short loose arm action that is very quick with normal effort. Smooth delivery, shoulders level and closed, lands slightly closed with an athletic finish. Fastball was 78-82, touching 83 with hard late run to it. Curveball was 71-73 with sharp 11/5 break, good shape and good armspeed. Change-up was 70-72 with good armspeed and heavy fade. When he drops down, fastball has heavy run to it and some sink, slider has sharp 10/4 break with some depth to it.

 

 

Dane Hoggard 3B / C / Cape Henry Collegiate , VA / 2020 Hoggard is 5-11 with a physical athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He throws from a lower three-quarters arm slot with a short loose arm action that is quick with normal effort. Shoulders uphill and closed, lands square with an athletic finish. Fastball was 74-77, with downward plane and a bit of late run. Curveball was 63-65 with good armspeed and hard sharp 11/5 break, swing and miss pitch already. Showed a change-up in warmups with some armspeed and heavy sink to it.

 

 

Ty Johnson 1B / LHP / Norfolk Christian, VA / 2020 Johnson is 6-1 with an athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a shorter free arm action with some effort. Shoulders uphill and on line, lands square with an athletic finish. Fastball was 70-73, with downward plane and some late run. Curveball was 55-61 with good armspeed and 1/7 break. Change-up was 63-65 with good armspeed and fade.

 

 

Jacob Lawler RHP / C / Battlefield, VA / 2020 Lawler is 5-10 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with short loose arm action that is quick with normal effort. Smooth delivery, shoulders level and on line, lands square with an athletic finish. Fastball was 78-81, touching 82 with some late run to it. Curveball was 66-68 with sharp 12/6 break, good shape and good armspeed. Change-up was 73-75 with good armspeed and some sink. Slider was 73-74 with good armspeed and late sharp 11/5 break, very good pitch with swing and miss potential.

 

 

Brendan McComber LHP / 1B / Hopewell, VA / 2020 McComber is 5-8 with a lankier athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He throws from a lower three-quarters arm slot, longer free arm action with normal effort. Shoulders uphill and on line, lands on line with a slight fall off finish. Fastball was 71-73 with downward plane and boring action to it. Curveball was 71-73 with 1/7 break and some armspeed. Showed a slider in warmups with some armspeed and downer break. Also showed a change-up with some armspeed and sink to it.

 

 

Gardner Meeks RHP / Norfolk Christian, VA / 2020 Meeks is 5-9 with a lankier athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He throws from a lower three-quarters arm slot, short free arm action with some effort. Shoulders uphill and closed, lands on line with an athletic finish. Fastball was 75-78 with downward plane and boring action to it when thrown to armside. Curveball was 61-64 with 11-5 break and some armspeed. Slider was 63-65 with similar break and a bit sharper. Change-up was 64-67 with some armspeed and heavy fade to it.

 

 

Brandon Parks LHP / 1B / Bethel, VA / 2020 Parks is 5-11 with a lankier athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a very short loose arm action that is quick with normal effort. Shoulders uphill and on line, lands square with an athletic finish. Fastball was 75-78, touching 79, with downward plane and a bit of late run. Curveball was 63-65 with some armspeed and sharp late 1/7 break. Change-up was 64-66 with some armspeed and sink.

 

 

Earl Skrine OF / RHP / St. John's College , VA / 2021 Skrine is 5-10 with a lankier athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a short free arm action that is quick with normal effort. Shoulders on line and level, lands on line with an athletic finish and slight recoil. Fastball was 72-75, touch 76, with some sink and some run. Splitter was 68-70 with good armspeed and late downer bite. Change-up was 65-67 with some armspeed and some fade.

 

 

Joe Vogatsky RHP / 3B / Kettle Run, VA / 2020 Vogatsky is 6-0 with an athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot with short loose arm action that is very quick with normal effort. Drop and drive delivery, shoulders uphill and closed, lands slightly open with an athletic finish. Fastball was 80-83, touching 85 with boring action and a little extra late armside run. Curveball was 69-71 with sharp 11/5 break, good shape, good depth, and good armspeed. Change-up was 70-72 with good armspeed and some sink. Splitter was 73 with good armspeed and some late dive.

 

 

Nicholas Willard RHP / OF / York, VA / 2020 Willard is 6-2 with a lankier athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short arm action that is quick with some effort. Drop and drive delivery, shoulders uphill and on line, lands on line with a fall off finish. Fastball was 81-84, touching 85 with downward plane and some hard late run to it. Curveball was 71-73 with 12/6 break and some armspeed. Slider was 75 with hard 11/5 break and good armspeed. Showed a change-up in warmups with some armspeed and late run.
