On Sunday June 7th the Braves held one of their annual workout days at Virginia Sports Complex and we were there to watch their strong group of prospects. Here are a few 17U prospects that stood out on that day.

Casey Bach LHP Centreville 2021

Long thin frame at 6-foot-3, 160-pounds. Normal effort delivery with a really short arm action throwing from a three-quarter arm slot. Did not possess a solid feel around the zone on the day, but with the frame and arm he is a guy to keep an eye on. The fastball was up in the zone and arm side for the majority of his outing while sitting 79-82 mph. Breaking ball was loose in shape and similar to the fastball it tended to be up in the zone. The breaking ball had 1/7 shape at 69-72 mph.

 

 

David Marshall RHP Home School 2021 (Liberty)

Projectable 6-foot-3, 185-pound frame. First time seeing Marshall and he did not disappoint. Easy down and out delivery, arm is up at foot strike, and throws from a high three-quarter slot. 87-88 with the fastball that gets some arm side run to both sides. Flashed two different breaking balls. Both appeared to lean towards being curveballs. Both had 11/5 shape, one sitting 69-72 mph and looked as more of a get it over pitch and the other was a hard power curveball at 74-76 mph. The power curve was nothing short of impressive. Has present swing and miss ability and appears to be able end at bats with it whenever he wants. He was under control throughout the outing and seemed to have a very strong presence and confidence on the mound.

 

 

Antwan Walton RHP/OF Greensville 2021

Long thin athletic frame at 6-foot-6, 185-pounds and plenty of room to add strength. Possesses fluid repeatable movements on the mound with a long loose arm stroke before throwing from a high three-quarter arm slot. Fastball sat 84-86 and touched 87 a few times. The fastball is very easy out of the hand and plays really well down in the zone. Looks to be plenty more in the tank with the fastball. Curveball was 69-72 mph with loose 11/5 shape. Changeup had solid arm speed and average feel at 73-75 mph. Offspeed still needs some tightening up, but nothing surprising as Walton has had some time off. Tremendous athlete with a very high ceiling.

 

 

Luke Jackman 3B/RHP Gonzaga 2021

Athletic high waisted frame standing 6-foot, 165-pounds. Athletic mover on the mound. Nice pace to the delivery and shows some repeatable mechanics throughout. Average arm circle with arm speed getting through from high three-quarter slot. Fastball played well to the glove side, sitting 84-85 mph. Breaking ball had 11/5 shape and depth at 72-74 mph. Displayed arm speed and above average feel for the pitch. Capable defender at third base and offers two-way potential with the athleticism to play multiple positions.

 

 

Hunter Trimarchi RHP/SS North Stafford 2021

Projectable 6-foot-1, 160-pound frame. Delivery has some pace to it. Sinks in back leg moving towards the plate and shows a slightly deceptive short arm circle while throwing from a three-quarter arm slot. Fastball sat 85-87 with spin rate ranging from 2312-2427 and played well at both ends of the zone. Slider was impressive. Did not appear to have a high strike percentage, but he was able to start it in the zone and it finished down. Plays really well off the fastball and will get plenty of swings and misses. The slider sat 76-78 mph and spin rate was 2540-2580. This is an uncommitted prospect that has a chance to miss a lot of bats and with some added strength could be a big time arm in the next few years.

 

 

A few quick notes on some others that stood out:

Cameron Murray C/1B Mountain View 2021

Physical 6-foot frame. Flashed some strong catch and throw tendencies. Had carry through the bag on his pops and the frame is durable enough to hold up to the catching duties at the next level. Solid receiving skills and appeared to be able to steal some pitches at the bottom of the zone.

Witt Scafidi C/1B Spotswood 2021

Athletic defender behind the plate with nice hip mobility. Thought he showed really nice receiving skills and pitch presentation all over the zone. Scafidi also has the ability to shut down the running game with a solid arm behind the plate and accuracy around the bag. Has the athleticism to move from behind the plate to possibly a corner outfield spot, or first base.
