DCPL: March 14 Quick Hits

Sunday, the DC Prospect League continued its first season of competition at Fredericksburg Nationals Stadium. The league features four teams made up of top prospects from the 2021-2023 classes, with the purpose of making sure these players get a higher number of opportunities to be scouted than will be afforded them in the shortened and delayed 2021 VHSL season. 

Here are some quick notes on a few players who stood out, look for a full Scout Blog with full videos late in the week:

 

 

 

 

Mason Balsis C / OF / Patriot, VA / 2022

Balsis is a Middle Tennessee commit with a strong athletic frame. His swing has gotten shorter over the last year and the strength in his frame is starting to show in his contact as he is driving the ball more consistently. Still has more power to come and has always been an outstanding catch-and-throw guy.

 

 

 

 

Diego Barrett SS / RHP / CD Hylton, VA / 2021

Barrett is a George Mason commit with a very lanky frame that has a lot of projection left to it. Came in after Clarke and worked 83-86, touching 87. Curveball was 69. Showed awareness of the running game catching a runner who took off from second base on his first move.

 

 

 

Evan Blair RHP / James Madison, VA / 2021

Blair is a Washington & Lee commit and was 83-85, touching 86 during his time on the mound. Showed feel for two offspeed pitches, a curveball with 10/4 break that was 67-70 and a change-up that was 75.

 

 

Brandon Clarke LHP / Independence, VA / 2021

Clarke is an Alabama commit and participated in Prep Baseball Report's Super 60 Draft Showcase in early February, where he was one of the standouts and will be a big mover in our next National Rankings Update. In his first game outing, he worked 92-96 in the first inning, touching 97. In his second inning, he was 90-93, touching 95 once. Breaking ball had a wide range of velocities of 76-86. Showed a single change-up at 89. Struck out 3 in 1 1/3 innings while walking three. Look for a much more detailed breakdown in the Scout Blog.

 

 

 

Casey Cook SS / RHP / Freedom (South Riding), VA / 2021

Cook is a North Carolina commit and is also one of the top Draft prospects in Virginia's 2021 class. He had a very impressive at-bat against Clarke during Clarke's first inning of work. Cook had the left/left disadvantage and got down in the count, then fought off a few pitches and had a couple of really tough good takes on sliders to get the count full. Then he fouled off 3 more pitches before finally working a walk. It was a gritty at-bat and he did a good job of fighting off the best Clarke had.

 

 

CJ Faulkenberry OF / 3B / Colgan, VA / 2021

Faulkenberry is a Longwood commit and is very athletic with loud metrics that have been on display for a while as a prospect. He has speed, arm strength, and hammers balls, what has been most impressive is that knack for the barrel that has been on display so far this spring. Most hitters in the league have been behind the pitchers, as should be expected. Faulkenberry has been the exception so far, and has consistently barreled balls all three times I've seen him.

 

 

Liam Golden RHP / West Springfield, VA / 2021

 

 

 

Nick Lottchea OF / LHP / Westfield , VA / 2021

Lottchea is a William & Mary commit and had a tough matchup at the plate against Clarke, but did get on the mound where he has ticked up a bit in velocity. His fastball was 84-86, curveball was 70-72, and change-up was 70.
