17U National Championship: Day 4 Notes

Here are some notes and video on over a dozen players that our Mid-Atlantic staff got to see in Day 4 of the 17U National Championship at Lakepoint.

Adam Emhoff LHP / Great Bridge, VA / 2023

Virginia Seminoles-Phillips

Andrew Harris 3B / 3B / Glen Allen, VA / 2023Harris continues to show his value as one of the best uncommitted corner defenders in the VA/DC '23 class. Above average lateral range, comes forward well, and has plenty of arm to make the longer throws in a deep position at third. The bat is second to the defense right now, but it has flashes. Mostly pullside, hits around it at times, and line drives with doubles power and potential for more.

Christopher Johnson 1B / RHP / Glen Allen, VA / 2023Johnson has shown his offensive upside all week, but showed some ceiling on the mound as well. He is a bit raw and has plenty of room to add polish on the mound. There is plenty to like, especially the speed and spin of the slider. The fastball stayed between 83-86 with pretty low effort and he would add and subtract depending on counts. Grabbed 87 to finish an at bat and appears to have plenty more there, especially with the speed of the slider. Slider is more vertical and not much horiztonal to it, but it is a hard downer and got swings and misses at the bottom of the zone.

Carter Schuma RHP / 3B / Trinity Episcopal School, VA / 2023Schuma was solid in his start on Saturday. Sitting mostly in the 83-85 range and had a few outlier 82's along the way. Touched 86 twice in his first three innings. Was effectively wild at times with the fastball and minimized. Threw the slider for strikes and showd decent feel for it in the zone. Although the slider showed inconsistent shape, Schuma kept hitters off the fastball with the 72-74 mph offering.

Team Max Bat

Jacob Bunch C / Grassfield, VA / 2023Easily one of the most impressive offensive performances at the 17U National has come from the bat of Jacob Bunch. The 6-foot-5 catcher/third baseman has been on a tear at the plate. Bunch has done a little bit of everything so far. Hit for power, average, ambush early in counts, work two strike counts, and stayed on spin. The arm is plenty strong to stay behind the plate, but the size and present offense say move to first and let the bat play. Sneaky athlete for his size and is capable of playing third, but will more than likely end up at first long term. Middle of the order bat with real power that plays in game. Bunch has really turned some heads down here and is primed for a big jump in the '23 VA/DC ranks.

PARKER HAMPTON MIF / 3B / Bayside , VA / 2023

Ryan Hoeft 3B / 1B / Grassfield, VA / 2024Hoeft has shown lots of offensive upside over the past week. The Grassfield CIF has a physical build at 5-11 200-lb but has plenty of athleticism to go along with it. Found barrels all week for MaxBat. He stays balanced throughout the swing with controlled intent, barrel action is whippy, and has also shown some adjustability to sink into his legs when out in front of offspeed. Uses all fields with some extra base power to pullside. Hoeft shows plate discipline with low chase rate and ability to execute situationally to drive in runners. Smooth actions at third base, but the arm strength may force him to move to second base or left field long term.

Jai Sample SS / RHP / James M. Bennett , MD / 2023Sample was a bit scattered in the first, but settled well over the next two innings. Sample would add and subtract depending on counts and comfortability with where he was. No doubt an electric arm and the ball jumps. Although there is some late effort in the delivery, Sample's fastball plays fairly easy and there appears to be a little more there. Showed a curveball and slider. He was able to land both pitches for strikes. Although the arm slowed, the 68-69 mph curveball had more shape than the 73-74 mph slider. With the athleticism, arm speed, and room to add polish, it is easy to see why Sample is one of the best uncommitted arms in the Mid-Atlantic.
