No. 12 Rockwall Defeats No. 18 Grapevine
March 16, 2018
ROCKWALL, TX - Since it is spring break for many high schools this week, we were able to catch a matchup between two Texas Power 25 teams. No. 18 Grapevine (12-2-1) traveled to No. 12 Rockwall (13-2-1).
Rockwall sent 2018 RHP Brooks Helmer to the mound. Helmer is ranked No. 48 in TX and is committed to Baylor. Grapevine got two of their three hits in the first inning when Alex Vergara and Brett Squires both singled. They would load the bases with two outs after a catcher’s interference, but Helmer got a line-out to end the inning.
The Rockwall Yellowjackets jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to a couple of leadoff walks from Grapevine starter Noah Brown, an Odessa JC commit. Oklahoma commit Diego Muniz, singled home a run, and another scored on an error.
Both starters settled in for the 2nd and 3rd inning without allowing a run, then handing the ball off to the bullpen. Both pens would hold up the opposing offense. Rockwall’s 2019 RHP Trace Stephenson, a submariner, went 3 shutout innings, allowing only 1 hit, and stranding three baserunners. For Grapevine, 2018 IF Brett Squires, a McLennan JC commit, threw three shutout innings. On to the top of the seventh with the score remaining 2-0. Enter Diego Muniz to close for Rockwall. Muniz hit the first batter he faced, and then got a 4-6-3 double play, and a fly out to centerfield to record the save. Final Score; Rockwall 2, Grapevine 0.
